The Ps1 plays Fearful Harmony because of this: In early Chinese culture, it is believed that strong winds carry epidemics so they hung up wind chimes so there would not be an epidemic. That is exactly what the PS1 does, it plays the sound of wind chimes to ward off negative energy in hopes that the disc would eventually be read. Note: There was a bit of plagiarism involved there.

I know what fearful harmony was made!: Is a combination of a sound of BIOS_STARTUP_8 and BIOS_STARTUP_9, they extended the sound to a loooong sound. Then, added to the ps1.

BIOS basically manages boot up of the console. Stands for Basic I/O (Input/Output) System, every single console or device that get its BIOS corrputed/bricked literally has no hope, not only the PS1.

I'm pretty sure what happens, at least on Fearful Harmony, is that the PS can't identify the disc but tries to read it anyway. This takes up a bunch of resources, meaning the PS logo plays through but at an extremely slow speed due to lag. The result is the sound. EDIT: Apparently this guess I made was mostly right. Neat.

Yeah, it is basically a MIDI playing but the notes keep getting played over and over because the PS1 is lagging so bad. The notes themselves seem to play at the correct speed.

FluxGigawatt Reading discs uses up no resource whatsoever except drive calls which are worth nothing. Fearful harmony is either the result of a corrupted/modified BIOS or a homebrew disc on a modded PS1 which somehow employes code hijacking which in turn edits the BIOS RAM data anyway.

the reason you can't easily get the force restart error is because you have a modchipped system. non-modified systems will always get the INSERT DISC background

Gotta love how creative error names were back then lol "Forbidden Image" "Fearful Harmony" "Personified Fear" 😂 Then again most consoles have a proper reaction to a different format disc, the original PlayStation seems to just have a stroke

Hey! I have slight problem with my ps1, when I turn it on it usually skips a sec of the intro when turning on. In other words, when I turn it on it skips a sec from the intro as if there is a glitch/bugg just before it starts. Then the screen starts “bouncing” up and down so to say, but I just touch the cables and that quickly solves that problem. Any help perhaps?

Fearful Harmony is EASILY the most disturbing. Just the very IDEA that an extremely scratched disc can cause an entire system to either die or have a near-death experience is just...*shivers.*

Why fearful harmony happens: The PS tries to read data, but can't find it. Because it is trying again and again it lags the PS a lot. The sound is the PS intro but slowed way down because of the lag. Scared me shitless when I was younger

I must correct something :) 1. Personified Fear happens also when you insert PS2 CD-ROM based game and wait about 2-3 minutes on SONY logo screen. I've tested it many times on many consoles. 2. Insert Disc/Force Restart is not a "rare" screen. It's just the same screen like "Insert PlayStation format DISC", but this version occurs on PAL models from 1002, to 5552. US and JP consoles have only "blue BIOS" from 1000/1001 to 9000/9001, but EU consoles are a little bit different. 1002, 5502 and 5552 models have "old style" tiled background BIOS, which has this "rare" error screen with black disc and PSX console pictures. In Europe only 7002, 7502, 9002 models have the "blue BIOS" same as in JP/US models with "Insert PlayStation Format DISC" error screen. Greetings from Poland :)

Personified fear is the scariest error ive ever heard of/seen. The unease you feel after that REALLY hard noise is just disturbing. After that noise, You only see a black screen. Nothing. I always turn down my volume incase i get scared. So yeah.

get ready for a paragraph about fearful harmony consoles weren’t that powerful in 1998 so if you put a really bad conditioned disk the ps1 would actually keep reading it. trying to read the disk does some damage to the BIOS/system, which ends up playing parts of the ps1 startup until it finishes. after it finishes, the only option you have is to click reset. obv they did fix this in 2002 (ps2 era) as tech was more advanced

I tryed al these errors on my psx and psone and every time it's going on that CD play screen

Fearful Harmony : The Playstation try to find data, but the PS1 can't find the data. Then, PS1 try again, again and again but this cause extreme lag because he still trying to find the damn data But PS1 never find, PS1 ends doing this forever. And then you hear the Fearful Harmony, that is the intro but danm slowed PS: My english is bad but k. (I'm Brazilian :) )

The thing is, the visuals are different every time, so sometimes you can get a bunch of graphics vomit, the PlayStation diamond thing but cut in half or you could even get the visuals to be a “Forbidden Image”

Imagine its 1995 you get a ps1 then you turn it on you dont know what disc is you put and you put a scratched disc and if you see the fearful harmony you will throw your ps1 out the window

Fearful Harmony most Likely Has It's Noise Since The PS1's Startup Sound Has The Reverse Sound Of Glass Shattering, Causing Fearful Harmony to Have The Sounds Of Windchimes.

I will share my theory why Fearful Harmony looks glitchy: Since you get Fearful Harmony by putting in an unauthorised/DVD/unknown format disc, the PS1’s fairly weak CD reader tries to read the info off the disc. Since it doesn’t have the curly lines, the console requests data to fill the empty disc in. Instead, you get an integer overflow. The eerie noises come from the console ripping ad much data as possible to get something working. The glitchy look is coming from the binary code on the disc loading in to the memory, but since it’s not the right format, it can’t run. To remedy this, the console spews out junk data from the disc (again) in attempts to get something working. I hope this was a good read

Am I the only one who gets on edge, sick to my stomach, and paranoid, whenever I hear fearful harmony? This shit used to play a lot at 2:00 AM because my old PS1 had an error where it would turn itself on, and I had an unreadable disc, the open latch was hard to get, and I was too scared to unplug it... I was like 4, when it happened. It still creeps me out just as much as it did back then.

Why does only PlayStation just glitch out and not work at all when t can’t read the disk?

I remember when I got fearful harmony and all I could hear was just a nightmare like tingling

Hi random person in the comments. Sit down, take a load off, and listen to my story of horror. It was a night like none other. I would pop in Final Fantasy Tactics, playing it for the fifth time. But I was pretty young at the time. I accidentally put in the wrong disc, and basically exploded in fear at this tune that played. My parents were both out of town, and my sisters both slept upstairs. I was petrified. I had no idea what this screen was. Luckily, I hear steps coming down the stairs, and my sister walks into my room. "Hey dude, do you hear some high pitc- what the heck did you do to dad's PlayStation!?" She yells at me. I don't respond. Instead, I break out in tears. She assures me I'm okay, and then, she unplugs the PlayStation. Now in 2018... That PlayStation still is under my bed now. I still haven't touched it at all. Anyone wanna buy it? 200 bucks.

You forgot the error where the psx starts up without sound and doesn't get past the first screen. I am looking for a remedy for that but can't find one.
