Prune, wire & style...Potentilla Bonsai! BoneDry Bonsai

Фильм және анимация

A few frustrations with this tree...not really sure why but I did manage to get it positioned somewhat like I wanted for now. Forever looking to the future!

I think the end result looks really good. We all suffer from the mid-work frustration sometimes, especially when wiring, I've snapped some important branches and cursed the whole hobby! But in the end it's all worthwhile...

Subscribed! Lol. I like your honesty. You have an eye for design I can appreciate. When I buy nursery trees I usually leave them in the nursery pot for at least the first season. They are usually pretty well grown into that pot and are fairly secure. I do first trim and wiring and then see where it goes next spring. You can even poke holes in those plastic pots to anker guy wires. I know this isn't for everyone. Some don't consider it bonsai until it's in that special pot. Just something to consider.

Thanks. I’ve been doing the same with my nursery stock, in my lastest video I did a procumbens that lived in its nursery pot for well over a year after an initial style. My little boxwoods I did videos on are still in their nursery containers! This potentilla was actually bought in a bonsai container & is doing really well. Appreciate your insight.

Thanks for the reminder I didn't think to wire trees in the pot before wiring that could be why I keep breaking branches. So I'll have to try again when I get the right kind of wire

Hey Matthew, just wanted to clarify that more than anything I was talking about disrupting the root system with a bunch of jarring at the top. If you’re breaking branches you may just need more practice, a little work on technique, that type of thing. Time of year can play a big part in the flexibility of branches as well. Keep trying, I know I am. Best of luck!
