PRS DGT Review.
Ойын-сауық
The PRS DGT David Grissom Trem model is arguably the most versatile Paul Reed Smith model, you can get anything from Les Paul to Telecaster type tones. I recently did a video on if I should sell or re fret one of my Telecasters, the majority of people advised me to sell it, this is what I bought to replace it. The Studio Rats are core band members Paul Drew on guitar/production/mixing, drummer James Ivey and Dan Hawkins on bass. They collaborate with singers and musicians to produce radio-ready songs. #prsguitars

DGTs are absolutely stunning instruments. Build quality & tones are incredible. AWESOME & wise selection
I just got myself a DGT. Found one second hand and couldn’t resist it. Really enjoying it. The build quality is perfection and the playability and tones are superb. It’s my first PRS and after watching so many videos about Paul I feel that while other manufacturers sit still being run by huge corporations Paul is always hands on striving to build better guitars.
A very underrated KZread channel - always enjoy your stuff 👍🏼
Amazing guitars. Many many years in the making and that bridge pick-up dialled down to 8 ish is really special. I sold mine a few years back but looking forward to picking up another soon . Great video
My favorite PRS. Congrats on a great acquisition, Paul!
Your tone is so addictive! I can't find another words to describe it!
I’ve been obsessed with videos about this guitar. This is a good one thanks! 🤙🤙
Excellent video and great performance! Congratulations! What a fantastic guitar sound, pretty versatile to get so many killer tones and plus it’s such a beautiful inspiring instrument!
That’s a beauty! Great demo
My guitar tutor has a DGT. What a lovely choice Paul. I have a 35th Anniversary SE and the difference in the pickups is incredible. The DGT has such beautiful tones. What a cracking guitar!👍
My goldtop DGT has been my number one since June of 2008! You’ve made a wise choice! 🎸🎸
I just got a DGT and agree with you 100% on all counts; especially the inclusion of a push/push for splitting the pickups

Of course, modding one with a push-push won't be a difficult job for any good tech. The pots aren't expensive either. But yeah, push-pushes are pretty much always going to be preferable, IMO/IME. I own a great Knaggs Severn with Strat knobs (I'd like to keep), and the push-pull is nearly impossible to operate. Getting that upgraded to push-push one of these days.
Despite it's not a recent video, seeing positioning fingers close to the strings, always, looks awesome. Nice work Paul!!!
Great decision on the DGT. It has that versatility you talked about with the LP and Tele sounds. It sounds AMAZING!
Lovely guitar. I have lusted after a Gold DGT ever since I got my CU24 some years ago. Great sounds. Thanks for explaining some of the tonal variations by playing with the volume controls.

Love your video and the guitar sounds fantastic. Great choice!
I’ll have a nearly identical one in my hands within 4 weeks. Cannot wait!
This is my dream guitar, haven’t had a chance to play one but I played a McCarthy and fell in love with it, I also bought a Silver Sky because of the neck.
The DGT pickups are unicorns. Clarity, sustiain, and power. I wish PRS would sell them separately so we could see how they sound in other guitars.

Yes I have to agree, my DGT pickups are so sweet and bell like. Every time I haven’t played it for a while and plug it I ask myself why I ever put it down (one reason is that I like the 24 frets of my Custom 24 which sounds almost as good). By far the best pickups I have ever heard. I love the harmonics I get from them when overdriven.
Lovely guitar and beautiful playing, love your channel.

Right decision made! I have a 2011 DGT 10 top and love love love it.... My first guitar with jumbo frets and it made my decision to do the same when my 89 stat came due for new frets to go jumbo. Great playing/demo. Thanks!

You did absolutely right! Whenever I hear a DGT I love it. Unfortunately I don‘t get these tones out of my DGT. And I alway wanted a Gold Top but had no chance. Mine is charcoal burst. By the way: your playing and tone is great. Greetings from Germany.
Brilliant guitar, especially those 1st good sounding split coil pickups without loosing volume and great tuning stability.
I absolutely loved everything about your video. Cheers!

Just got one at the weekend in charcoal cherry burst. I already have a CU24 and a 594 but this one is in a league of it own!! I think I may have found my perfect guitar
great review, thanks
A little bit envious! Looking for that exact DGT goldtomp model but they don't come through my town too often. I'll have to head to the big city to locate one to try. Thanks for sharing and play yours in good health.
Great Choice Paul, PRS do make great guitars and as you say you can do so much using the volume and tone controls. I too sold my 65 Custom Shop Strat and replaced it with a 65 Custom Shop Strat with jumbo frets, it was much better. It joins my two PRS McCartys going strong after 20 years. It would be great to know the amp sounds and how you are getting them. Keep up the good work, love this channel.

Hey JB, thanks for the comment. I was actually using a Boss GT-1000. for all the tones. in the vid. The intro song was the GT-1000 with the intro riff being a Divided by 13 RSA23

I have a 2016 DGT solid rosewood neck custom. Neck shape is the greatest. Acoustically, it vibrates more than any guitar I’ve ever played. And it has so many unique voices. Also love my (much lighter) 2005 Custom 22.
Amazing playing
Agreed with all comments on the versatility. My DGT is my #1 as well. What other guitar can pull off classic rock John Mellencamp riff tones and Led Zeppelin. The days of taking 2 guitars to my cover gigs were over when I got the DGT.
The prs way to make a humbucker sound like a sc is a coil tap, not a coil split. In fact it is still an humbucker with missmatched coils when you tap it a portion of one bobbin goes straight to ground. The result is a more “sc sound” without volume loss and still hum bucking proprieties.
I am very happy with my DGT and I find myself picking it up for most situations. I have a few great Teles, Strats and a Les Paul but this PRS is just a pleasure to play. With regard to the issure with the knob, I simply put my fingertip on it's lower edge and lift.

Tengo una DGT 10 top y se come a todas las que he podido probar. Vendí mis 2 últimas Tyler pero mereció la pena. Es la mejor guitarra para mi gusto que existe. Una navaja suiza
I have been lusting after a DGT. But the dealbreaker for me is the pull tone knob for split coil. I wish they would incorporate the mini toggles as they do on Paul's Guitar and the Custom 24-08. Lovely sounding DGT though.
there's an elegant to the push-pull issue. tony larramore did a video on his new prs ce24 and he put rubber bands around the knobs to make it easier to grip them!
I´ve got an DGT too...and i agree! AMAZING!!!! The push/pull is the only thing that i don´t like on it. I´ve got the same problem to pull it out, when using it live. I don´t use it very often, but i will change it into a push/push-pot.

@TheStudioRats

Hi Michael, I did a video where I replaced some Dragons with BearKnuckle Mules,
About the reversed volume controls... Grissom primarily uses his bridge pickup when playing live, so its volume is right under his finger. The pickups are based on PAFs Grissom has in his 335, and the neck profile is a cross between a strat and the regular PRS McCarty, which he also helped design. And the big frets and the pickups, plus the factory spec’d .11 strings get a great late 50s Les Paul sound that covers all sorts of sounds. It’s a great guitar and a great decision.

The frets and the 11's, makes the feel so unique and a more sure footed feeling + the sound. Really didn't know what I had when I 1st bought It. I don't play it regularly as I'm am more of an S style guy but when I pull it out it's like bringing the The Lexus out to drive.
You made the right decision!

Looks like my DGT, only mine is from 2008 and mine has its share of war wounds. Eh, it's got street cred. Regarding pulling the tone knob to tap the pickups and it being difficult, I wrap a wide rubber band around the knob a bunch of times so it fits very tightly. That makes it easy to pull the knob, and doesn't feel weird when rolling the knob.
hello and thank you for your videos always at the top ;) the guitar is really good, the sound is great and has a Les Paul and Telecaster sound, and if the neck is thicker it's great because I have a PRS S2 standard, I like the guitar a lot but it's true that the thin frets, I don't like it either and I prefer a bigger neck too, otherwise these guitars are great.... That doesn't stop it not and you will happen to want other guitars later loool, that's how we guitarists are.
I got a custom 24 around 20 years ago. It’s still e one I play 90% of the time. My Les Paul and Tele stay parked most of the time. Any USA PRS is the right decision. I love mine.
Your amp tone and signal chain fit really well with this, and are aligned with my preferences. May I ask: could you describe the setup you are using? Thank you
What a monster player you are. Dang!

I have a killer Gibson ES335 63RI and a great Fender Custom Shop Relic 50's Strat. My 2011 PRS DGT Splits the difference between the two of them and is the one that most often gets taken to the gig. Plus I just like lookin at it.

Yeah I struggled to find a PRS that I liked until now.
The DGT is definitely the best PRS in terms of neck profile and pickups. The fact that it is 22 fret instead of 24 means it does can close to the Les Paul tone, something that the Custom 24 doesn’t do as well. Great choice mate.

I have an ‘08 DGT Goldtop and after all these years the finish has settled into the grain on the top revealing there’s some major flame underneath it. I always wanted a Goldtop but I considered stripping it to see, but my tech said to leave it alone, that it’s too pretty as is. They’re great guitars and I love mine DGT.
Just ordered one... comes August 2022... But with Birds in Charcoal Burst ;)
I want one too!

Nice guitar. As a lefty it's hard to get a prs. Wasn't for me so started a small collection of eggle berlins which I prefer. Ultimately I found a Berlin custom last year which is close to a Les Paul and nicer than the others I have So 28 years after being in the original eggle factory and leaving with nothing I found an amazing guitar for a very low price

Cheers Mike, your message was the final nail in it’s coffin.
You made the right decision.
I want to hear a VS video between this and your new 2021 PRS Studio.
I second that. Received my brand new DGT in Cherry SB a couple of days ago. As a pro PRS user since decades I also must concur that this my favourite PRS,too. One thing I find especially noteworthy: the amazing volume pots,I.e you can seamlessly blend from George Benson clean to Larry Carlton Sustain, from 5(clean) to 8-10(Larry tone as in Mr 335 Live in Japan). And the cap which is in the volume pots makes the coil split virtually redundant. Use it a lot with my McCarty but don’t seem to need it with the DGT. Another question: did you change the standard gauge from. 011 to 010? I didn’t….it „jazzes“ better….the crunch stuff it does in any case.
Wonderful tones. What amp(s) are you using and what else is in your signal chain? Thank you.
Well this guitar covers a lot of ground; and its so beautiful because its a Gold top which i love! Also you got already a tele, so its a win win situation. May it serve you well ; )

Buy a small plastic rubber band and attach to the push pull, that's what I do for my PRS Studio push pull. Hope it helps.
Great guitar Paul... I own that same model - 2007 when they were first released. It's my go to for a solid body humbucker instrument... but as you stated, gives you a lot of flexibility with the coil tap option.
