You must be adding rooting hormone...I have tried the very way...but failed. I came to know without rooting hormone the buds may develop but not roots. And eventually the plant die.

I also found that the onion helps to stop the forming of disease, but ist best to use hormone treatment as well.

You can add ready-made soil that you buy from an agricultural nursery or peat moss soil. The most important thing is that it be light soil that facilitates simple root growth.

Coarse clean propagating sand. It should be gritty not smooth. Only there to support the plant and retain the moisture.
