Proof that St. Joseph was NOT an Old Man

Dr. Brant Pitre joins Matthew Leonard to discuss why - contrary to popular opinion - we can pretty much know St. Joseph wasn't an elderly man who was simply commissioned to care for Mary like a grandpa. Obviously there's nothing wrong with being old or a grandpa, but understanding Joseph as a younger man puts his relationship with Mary and Jesus in a whole new light. (Also, make sure to check out Matthew and Brant's other St. Joseph KZread video titled Dr. Brant Pitre Reveals the Scriptural Secrets of St Joseph. • Dr. Brant Pitre Revea... )

St Joseph was such a pure and virtuous man that his sexual/sensual appetites were subject to his intellect and will and his desire for communion with God was a much greater motivator than the base desires of sensual pleasure... that's how I've always seen him. He gave himself over entirely to God's will, just as all Christians are called to do today.

I've always suspected he was a strong man in his prime because after Jesus was born, he was awakened in the middle of the night and told to take Mary and Joseph to Egypt straight away. An old man is likely to be less capable of rolling out of bed in the middle of the night, packing up his wife and child and walking to Egypt. He would have had to have been strong and in his prime to look after them during that journey and their first few years in Egypt.

St. Joseph could very well have married Mary (of course, partially) because his wife died before he was 27 and needed a mother for them. My great-uncle did exactly that. And is a grown man being chaste/celebate that strange? Sex really isn't everything!

I kinda go for this. Mary and Joseph were betrothed before the Annnunciation--before they knew she would be mother to Jesus. Regardless, it doesn't bother me at all that "the brothers of Jesus" are sons of Clopus who is brother to Joseph. Joseph doesn't appear to be around at the crucifixion so maybe Clopus was looking out for his sister in law, which kept all the family in proximity.

EXCEPT that under Jewish law they would have been obligated to take care of Mary and Jesus giving Mary to John would have been breaking the law and would not only be a scandal but have severe legal repercussions. 😉

@@kerprice Look at marriage vows. Both husband and wife vow to be true to their spouse UNTIL death. But that doesn't presume either will have sexual relations after death. For the surviving spouse, it means he or she wouldn't violate their original vows, but it doesn't mean he or she must have sexual relations. As for the 'firstborn son' part, that was an important legal distinction with regard to that culture's inheritance laws, but calling anyone the firstborn didn't necessarily mean the same woman ever had a secondborn. The bottom line is we can't know for sure in anyway that a legal court might consider valid, but look at what we do know, assuming we believe the literal sense in context with cultural norms for that time and place. Jesus gave responsibility for care of His mother to St. John, right? Of course there are more significant levels of understanding about those words from the cross, but if she had surviving children they would already have had that responsibility.

Did Mary and Joseph have a normal healthy relationship? What does Scripture say? Matthew 1:25 - The New International Version (NIV) 25 But he did not consummate their marriage until she gave birth to a son. And he gave him the name Jesus. Matthew 1:25 - King James Version (KJV 1900) 25 And knew her not till she had brought forth her firstborn son: and he called his name JESUS. Matthew 1:25 - New Living Translation (NLT) 25 But he did not have sexual relations with her until her son was born. And Joseph named him Jesus. Matthew 1:25 - The New King James Version (NKJV) 25 and did not know her till she had brought forth her firstborn Son. And he called His name Jesus. Matthew 1:25 - New Century Version (NCV) 25 but he did not have sexual relations with her until she gave birth to the son. And Joseph named him Jesus. Matthew 1:25 - American Standard Version (ASV 1901) 25 and knew her not till she had brought forth a son: and he called his name JESUS. Why is this so hard for people to accept? And the brothers of Jesus were....wait for it....brothers. Not cousins.

If that were the case, then Jesus giving his mother to John would have been an ILLEGAL act under Jewish law, because her other children legally had that responsibility. Joseph knew that because of the conjugal relationship between Mary and the Holy Spirit she was the spouse of the holy spirit. (The New Ark of the Covenant.) And that Jesus was the long awaited messiah. Just as no one could touch the Ark without being a high priest. Joseph would not have touched her.

@@gatekeeper96740 You are just throwing made-up theology that clearly conflicts with actual Scripture. The Old Testament of where only the high priest could enter the Holy of Holies is just not relevant No different from the fact that people actually touched Jesus, kissed His feet, touched and felt His hair, kissed His face... and Jesus touched them too. Why fight with Scripture? Why this desire in not accepting the fact that Mary and Joseph had a typical husband/wife relationship, including other children? It's all there in black and white and doesn't in any way take away from Jesus, Mary, Joseph, the Gospel message, etc.

@po18guy No one has an obsession with sex except Catholics. The Bible is clear that Jesus had actual brothers and sisters. Why is that so shocking? It isn't. And those facts don't negate that Jesus was born of a virgin. Get real.

@po18guy What in the world does Mary and Joseph having a "married relationship" have to do with pool parties, hookers, and fentanyl? Nothing. What it does mean is what it says....a relationship that would not be "different" than other married relationships. Why this desire to fight Scripture? Really.

@po18guy I'm not trolling....just not in agreement with this video. Unlike you I allow Scripture to be Scripture. I don't try to make it fit to a predetermined agenda. Really....what could this simple verse mean..."25 But he did not consummate their marriage until she gave birth to a son. And he gave him the name Jesus." ? Do you understand the word consummate? Do you understand the word until? I'm not the one trying to argue away the obvious.
