I think it's more likely that Hell made a mockery of the Crystal Arch by making their own version. It looks too different and the spikes coming down from the sky make me think it's still in Hell.

Wasn't Diablo trying to corrupt the spire in Diablo 3? So if heaven has become an outpost of hell, it's probably due to Diablo's corruption. In Storm of light, a corrupted angel was born, and only Tyreal noticed, so it's likely the angels didn't notice the corruption until it was too late.

I still think what you said holds some truth to it. Hell is fated to win the Eternal Conflict, and I think realistically by the events of Diablo 4, while not hellish, heaven has become a much darker, corrupted version of what we see in 3. Imperius is likely still in charge but with the corruption of heaven and what happened to Malthael he's likely a tyrant now. I think it's likely that Imperius' new council of angiris (this is my speculation) is now entirely corrupted angels.

I think the biggest mystery, to me, is the lack of any kind of 'presence' of the Nephilim characters. If Lorath is still alive, than at least some of the Nephilim should still be alive, unless Nephilim also live longer than regular mortals (which i believe is the case) then they all should still be alive by this point. Additionally, there should be new Nephilim being born all the time now too, but I don't recall seeing any hints or signs of beings being shown in D4 that could be shown to be Nephilim.

My impression was that all humans are Nephilim, but in D3 and before, only very powerful ones were capable of 'inheriting' their power (becoming 'Heroes'). With the World Stone gone, all humans are now capable of inheriting their power but are ignorant of their lineage [and the power]. Some come by it more easily/naturally than others. I think this is what Inarius' Cathedral of Light and Lillith's Faction have been doing in the past fifty years, recruiting Nephilim to their sides [for Second Sin War?].

My understanding is that true nephalim are immortal. But due to tampering with the World Stone done by Inarius, they lose their strength with each generation that sprung forth from them. The Crystal Arch's presence purged the High Heavens of all of Diablo's taint once he was no longer suppressing it. The corruption we see leading up to Reaper of Souls was the result of the Black Soulstone and all the Prime Evils it contained leeching corruption out into Heaven. Once it was removed, it was implied that such corruption was undone, and the only damage left would have been psychological damage (like Imperius' paranoia and wounded pride) rather than some sort of ongoing perversion of Heaven.

Wild theories, the Art-work itself could be a stronghold, a fortress or down right an outpost in Hell or near Heaven for that matter. Heck, it could be the borders of Pandemonium for that matter or something entirely else. I love this theorycrafting : my take is that if heaven is abandoned and angels have died, I think Auriel, aspect of hope (dead or alive) will have a key role in restoring heaven. I can see her having a key role in freeing inarius, maybe when she saw heaven fall she enacted something that caused inarius to escape. Maybe she left a thread from her ribbon weapon with inarius that stayed with him all that time and could pick locks then when Auriel saw heaven falling she wanted inarius to be the hope for heaven. Maybe inarius will be the last Angel and therefore will take up the throne after imperius is dead. I’m talking about angels dying as if they don’t get reincarnated. Maybe with heaven being tainted by hell, the angels simply *cant* and maybe this is why lorath nahr was talking to a grave, cuz tyreal passed and couldn’t be reincarnated to visit him. Maybe after we restore heaven then the angels will be able to be reincarnated. Inarius prob needs to purify it with his pulse light powers he used in the cinematic. Oof whatever it is, I can’t wait for the lore omg.

Its the cathedral of hatred. What I ghatered is that the scrolls of fate stated that heavens would be destroyed by Hell, but since the Nephalem are absent from the prophecies lf the scrolls, it did not forecast that hell will fail to do so. In the end rhe Heavens are left stranded. Their doom did not come, their scrolls of fate became useless. Those who lead others as a beacon are left... purposeless. In the end, losr and confused, Heaven closed its gate. Hoping to find a new purpose

  • @simian9200

No shot. The High Heavens look almost nothing like that Hell fortress. Not even the Silver Spire matches the structure of that central tower, and the High Heavens are a massive city spanning an entire realm, not a (relatively) tiny fortress taller than it is wide. Further, it's been explicitly stated that Heaven has withdrawn to lick its wounds -- if it had been overthrown or corrupted entirely, there's no shot they wouldn't have said so (or at the very least they would have been conspicuously and completely silent about Heaven's status), considering the implications such a thing likely would have had on the whole of Creation. While it is _possible_ that the Black Soulstone has permanently tainted or diminished the purity of Heaven, it is implausible that it was significantly able to permanently corrupt Heaven without the Crystal Arch also having been destroyed. It is _beyond implausible_ to assume it somehow completely corrupted Heaven despite being removed within a year and destroyed entirely shortly thereafter _while_ the Crystal Arch still shone with its purifying light. And we know the Crystal Arch still shines *and* has not been corrupted because Inarius still has his wings -- if the Arch were suppressed, corrupted, or destroyed by the time of D4, he would have _at least_ lost his wings like all the other Angels did when Diablo reached the Arch in D3.

I would say that it's an ebb and flow type thing. Example, the demons can be born by the 100's to the 1000's at a time, whereas the angels are tuned one at a time in the spire. The angels have more "Power" than almost all of the lesser evils, albeit outnumbered. So, while the gates to heaven are closed, I think it's because of an absence of the light, causing a thinning in the veil of actual power. So much so, angels trapped and tortured in hell are able to escape, yet still unable to go home on their own. Demons bound in the void are able to cross into sanctuary through forgotten rituals. As above, so below. The closer you get to the light, the darker your shadow becomes.

I jus don't see the evidence here that this is Heaven other than some similarities in the art style/ architecture between the two images. If the developers have stated "Heaven has closed it's gates", then that means that some form of Heaven still exists as it was. Full Stop. But it would be the twist of a life time to get up there and see it all destroyed and barren and lifeless without the Angels. That would be some dark stuff...

That could also be cancept artwork of Diablo's chaos sanctuary that we may get to return to in Diablo 4. We already know we will be going to Hell in game... This may be a primary location where Lilith is stationed. Also... It's important to remember the Zakarum faith was all about "inner light" so I doubt Heaven being closed will get in the way of Holy Classes..after all the angels vowed not to help humans yet we still saw many using the light in the past. If the theory of this being Heaven is true, however, it would make sense that a new order would emerge of Light welding Holy knights to balance out the power vaccume of Hell. We may even get a new Paladin out of the Horadrim... We do see Donan wearing the Zakarum symbol in the beta trailer and we know he is linked to a quest called "secrets of the Zakarum" so he might very well end up becoming the founder of a new Horadrim Paladin order.

In keeping with the series penchant for dysfunctional families, I think the focus of Diablo IV will be a rebellious Lilith in Sanctuary, with Mephisto (her Father) ruling Hell. From the various art and Lore, it appears Lilith possesses Diablo's skull (to amplify her own power and keep Lord of Terror from resurrecting?), I would be curious if Mephisto is also using Baal's skull/Soul stone to bolster his own power (and keep Baal from Resurrecting and contending Mephisto's rule). I would like Linarian (First born Nephalem, Lillith and Inarius' son, Mephisto's grand-son!) to be a protagonist in the story, leading the remnants of the Horadrim that Lorath appears to belong to...but in true Diablo fashion, I believe his story will be much darker. It wouldn't surprise me that he conquered and corrupted the High Heavens, just to see his Father's face when he returned 'Home' (spurned child)! That said, if there is a continuation of the Corruption of High Heaves from D3, it will likely be from Mephisto. Imperius' growing darkness and *Hatred* (of Hell and Prime Evils, of Nephilim, and Lillith and Inarius) will be a weakness to exploit, as well as the loss of their divine Justice. It was also Mephisto who imprisoned and tortured Inarius for the past several millennia and I don't see Inarius having much loyalty for Heaven at this point, so Mephisto may have learned a few exploits from the torture and questioning.

Here's a little something i was thinking about after finishing act 1 in D4, it would be amazing if we'll get to see nephalem from D3 in any way, whether ally, enemy or a passer by at certain event/events of the campaign, although third option would be a punch in the face for D3 campaign's champion. Wouldn't it be cool if we were to encounter D3's nephalem in D4 according to which character we had the most hours on, say a Demon Hunter Valla for example, if the account has played D3 the most with that specific character? And if the account hasn't played D3 at all, randomize it if it were just an account with D4 only(alternative, a simple two click survey before you begin campaign, you played d3? if yes which character? click Valla, done thank you), would be a cool touch to detail if you ask me since D3 sold a lot of copies and attracted many of the old players back so far, I like the #2 idea the most, an all-out battle against once hero, champion of sanctuary that was(or is) us in D3

A fight with D3's Nephalem would be cool altho i dont want a simple fight-and-done thing where D3's Nephalem has just a short cameo in D4 then its done. I personally hope that our Nephalem from D3 plays a substantial role in Diablo's current and future games!

I doubt that with the restoration, or slow restoration, of nephalem powers that our heroes from D3 would still be alive/combat worty. They mentioned it happens decades after, assuming our D3 character is in their 20s (albeit some look like they're in their 30s) then we can assume that at the low end (decadeS, so at least 2) they're 40-50, they are probably worn out.

D4 tells us exactly what the writers intend for Heaven, not so much in the information, there is effectively none, but in the type of story the writers tell us. From the first premise, D4 is about us children trying to free ourselves (and some failing and repeating the suffering for others) from abusive Parents (Lilith, too much freedom and Inarius, too strict) both of whom see their children as mere tools to use as they see fit (including against eachother). This sets the tone for the entire Questline as well as the miriad sidequests. The writers explore all of the current themes that face us in the real world: Love, Hate, Loss, Trauma, Betrayal, Feeling powerless, Good and Bad people do in the name of Religion (some of them really detailed and well done) and moreover how the various characters deal with these issues both well AND badly. Society and how we deal with many of these human problems is central to D4. So even though we dont actually KNOW much from d4 about heaven, we know the kind of story the writers will want to tell and for heaven and Imperius there really is only one story to tell. The rise of Authoritarianism and Fascism. After all the best Villains are the heros of their own story, Imperius has enough material and reason in the suffering caused to heaven (and blaming whoever, Hell/Nephalim/Humanity/Tyrael) to grab power and become a dictator (who else can fix heaven? right?). They can easily explore how ordinary people (angels?) fall for the lure of Fascism... This is how heaven will turn dark. The groundwork is already there in the Church of the Light.

1:35 that’s not the same building it’s a mirror of it but not the same, if the D4 devs are saying it is the same place they’re taking some design liberties with the work. If I had to guess that would be one of the lords of hell the prime evils fortress likely Mephisto’s. So the building is no where near as tall as the crystal gates and is missing the to spikes from the top, the hell thing is also far more squat, only coming to about half the hight of the angelic building.

I really don't think heaven will play much of a role in the base game of Diablo 4 perhaps another of the archangels decides that the prophecy is about them and not inarius and we'll fight some angels that way but I don't think we'll see heaven I'd like to see angels being more of an antagonist to us in Diablo 4 expansions though Sanctuary exists within the balance we're not at all on the side of the light and I'd like that to demonstrated more clearly. I think it'd might be cool to see a frustrated archangel attempting the same thing Diablo did in 3 to fuse with his brothers the "Primeholy" or whatever but I bet that the main game takes place following Lilith around sanctuary and like an act and a half in hell and that a expansion reveals another continent on Sanctuary and focuses on that

Who destroyed heaven? The prime evil. If heaven is so desperate for new angels why wouldn't they allow Inarius to return? I think an angel civil war is possible, with a large number of angels wishing to destroy humanity as they blame humanity for the near total destruction of heaven, and those that recognize it was humanity that changed the angels fate as they were destined to lose. Granted, I still think we have fought evil too often in the Diablo series since light can be just as oppressive. Even when we fight an angel it is when he has fallen, so not truly angelic.

SPOILER!!!!!!!! The issue with the Nephalem of D3 being the one to make Heaven Hell is that in some side missions in D4, you find out that most of them are dead either by finding their corpses or even fighting their ghosts. Some could still be alive but I have yet to do all the side quests so I can not confirm or deny this. Odds lean more towards dead though as the series is VERY consistent when it comes to killing off heros from the previous games. Usually in a very brutal fashion.

In the book of tyrael, believe all the angel have lost their powers or a significant portion of them, which is a wonder why in the trailer, it appears maybe sanctuary may have preserved inarius' powers? Always find it weird how Tyrael gave up his wings, but retained power to some degree, above that of a mortal... even if it was kinda just sitting there talking to lorath getting on your F'in nerves as you do greater rifts.

Her? Rathma is a Male. Rathma avoided the prophecy because he knew that humanity, or at least those who would take their fate into their own hands as Nephalem are inherently paracausal. In other words, prophecy is what you make of it but if you chase it or try to force it you will never reach it. And to end the eternal conflict would risk destroying Sanctuary and all of humanity, that's why Rathma believed in the Cycle and Balance of life and Death, good and evil, heaven and hell. There could only be peace in harmony.
