    Thank you so much for doing this video. I am still a novice to the Prologue and there isn't a lot of literature from Korg on how to do everything with it's functions. At least it's not entirely clear anyhow. I usually learn by watching other people's videos. That's how I learned how to use the Sub37. Not so many videos on the Prologue yet so seeing this video has actually helped out with quite a bit on using the multi engine. Now I just need a demonstration of how to use the split function on the keyboard lol

  • @MRTUNA

    @MRTUNA

    6 жыл бұрын

    As I've found the split functions are in the menus but its not too hard to find once you're familiar with the layout. I've had the mini and the monologues and their workflow is exactly the same so it was super familiar right out of the box. I'm really happy with how easy everything is to access (except for velocity settings which I have forgiven). I'm gonna try to do some more comparison vids like this going into the future.... I just have no rhyme or reason to it so I start talking and kinda let it get away from me. A script would probably help but I'm too lazy for that. I think the lack of polish in the video is part of it's charm

  • @Matthewsavant

    A lot of weird negative fanboy comments on here. You guys have to realize that having synths that sound drastically different from each other is a huge positive right? I think people get up in arms only because they want to justify their purchase...but putting down other synths doesn’t make your synth better nor does it remotely justify your purchase more than someone else’s. Owning both would be a smart move since they have a very different sound and set of abilities. Comparison vids are only valid when comparing clones to originals or something like that. That’s why this is called a “friendly comparison” compare doesn’t inherently mean which one is better, comparing and contrasting is super important when buying synths and building a studio but really anyone watching this should just know this it’s just simple critical thinking skills

    Well stated. But fanboys will be fanboys, and sometimes it's good to hear the good vs. the bad contrasts as well as all the positive stuff. I almost bought the Prologue 16 when it was $1999 until I learned that it didn't have aftertouch or a sequencer. Now it's priced at $1499 but I still wouldn't buy it. If Korg eventually adds those missing features then I wouldn't hesitate to buy one.

    I really pondered this before finally buying the Prologue. I love the Prophet and had a original 5 for many years, but after extended playing of both, the fat rich timbre of the Korg sold me on it. It's a wonderful synth, no regrets.

  • @ErraticFaith

    @ErraticFaith

    4 жыл бұрын

    A little amusing, since the thin boring sound and lack of pretty much any timbre at all, as well as missing a huge amount of features even much older boards had natively - is one of the reasons it has been a complete failure for Korg and is being redesigned lol. Still. Each to his/her own.

    @@ErraticFaith I'm curious what you would choice over the Prologue?

  • @ErraticFaith

    @ErraticFaith

    4 жыл бұрын

    It's a fair enough question. To start with, my issue with Korg is mainly that they come up with ridiculous excuses to remove features that for other companies are usually native. It might be Aftertouch. It might be the claim that we all want '37 keys' as with the new wavestate, it might just be filters and lfo. Being told that a future product 'might' be made 'later' depending on feedback, for twice the price - just to include some basic features... well I find that astounding honestly. I found the Prologue sound to be fairly un-analogue at the time, thats not to say it lacked appeal in some ways (simplicity of approach) but it was a close call for many with the Rev2 (Don't personally care for DSI). I held back, in the hope that Korg would fix the mess of prologue but instead they have kept pretty quiet and it is less promoted than Kronos 2 (nearly a decade old). So I find that quite troubling too. Novation would be the choice now I think. With aftertouch and a wider feature set than the Korg - but with a better sound as well.

  • @carloschafin1

    @carloschafin1

    4 жыл бұрын

    @@ErraticFaith Did you demo the 8 or 16 voice? The 16 sounds much richer. Also, the point about the Novation is well taken, it's very nice. One feature of a knobby synth like the Prologue is it's use with Omnisphere which I use frequently. The integration is excellent thanks to Spectrasonics. I use it in that configuration most of the time.

  • @ChurroLightyear
    @ChurroLightyear2 жыл бұрын

    I got a prologue 8 a few years ago and I can't complain. Something about mixing extremely digital sounding sounds and vintage analog sounds is pretty neat to me. But there's really something special with all the prophet/rev 2 oscillators that just sound so rich I just don't know why they sound so different from everything else out there.

I think it sounds pretty good from what I've heard, just the price point feels a bit high and want to see of the 3rd party developers deliver will deliver with the user-generated waves. Love the Prophet 6 despite what some consider limitations for a modern synth, so I expect I'd find plenty to like in the Prologue as well. What I don't have is a bunch of space left for yet ANOTHER big keyboard, so my P6 module wins for me until they module-ize the Proglogue. And you are the lost voice-twin of a guy I used to work with in the late 90s (also from the "great white north").

    I actually prefer the Korg in some sounds and the P6 in others. The P6 has something to its sound I just don't like sometimes. I had the same with a P12 I had on demo. It's good there is so much variation in synths/sounds; so we can all get what we like most.

    I am super sold on the Grandmother. I am firmly on the side of the fence that it looks awesome and has some great features. I've got the Sub37 and there is a Voyager in my area that I really realllllly really want to justify but haven't been able to figure out what synths I would sell to make it work. The Grandmother is definitely on my list though!

    I found a few things. The 1st 500 are being sold at GC for the MoogFest 2018. They were sold out in minutes lol. They will have another shipment in June as well as Sweetwater which is where I shop since 2015. But yea, the color scheme is a tad goofy but has that late 70's garage built synth junky vibe. I say jump the gun on the Voyager even if you do have a Sub37. I still wish I purchased a standard size Voyager. Instead I waited so long the only thing left was the XL. Funny store I made a backorder purchase of $5000 for the XL & a few weeks later I panicked & canceled the order. Less than 6 months later (shortly before December 2017) it dropped to $4000. This was a deal of a life time for me & I took it. So if you add up store price of Voyager and the 2 CV patchbay modules, it would be well over $4000. I'm very happy to have the builtin patchbay on the XL but it is the heaviest synth on the market. About the same weight as my retired Korg Triton 88.

    It really is the "holly grail" of all mono synths man. If I had a lottery ticket, it would be well spent on the Emerson modular lol. You can get a few well cared for used XL's on ebay and reverb.com under $4000 or just wait for Sweetwater to drop the price again. I was stewing on standard voyager & XL model for the longest time. Just recently I was stewing on PRS custom 22 & McCarty 594. I finally made the leap for McCarty 594. I use to have a custom 22 & traded off. Latest videos have my ears stuck on McCarty for sure. Research research research, it could just make a man loose his mind.

    UnderBridge Rock funny you mentioned 3 oct keybed. For me, I never wanted to step away from 3.5 oct keybed after realizing & owning the Model D, that extra half oct was & still is very useful. At this moment, I figure 2.5 oct is better than 2 like a sub smally I think lol.There’s just something about having that extra half oct down low, that is, if it’s not a full 5 oct. when I owned a mininova, I felt I needed more keys down low but no more than half oct. On my prophet 6, I actually feel I need 1 more octave up top. This seams to be in some cases. Since I first owned prophet 6, I just wanted to use it as my main analog polly synth. Can’t really do this with 4 oct but you can actually get by. I do complain a lot less now anyways lol. As far as 3 oct keybed go, I wish 44 key was more popular than 37. I know of only four 44 key (3.5 oct) synths out now, model d, voyager, pro 2 & mopho x4. All this being said, you may find yourself to give in if you want the synth bad enough, that’s if you’re still young. A lot of older cats just can’t break old habits.

    Great review! The P-6 and OB-6 sound awsome but what kills me is the envelope behavior. The EG doesn’t reset to 0 when cycling through the voices so you always end up with a truncated attack phase. In other words if you have a sound with a slow attack it sounds like the attack is set to zero, which kills pad sounds or anything with a nuanced transient. Changing the envelope setting never worked for me, this is why I sold my PolyEvolver and Prophet 8. Have you Noticed this? I actually prefer the envelope behavior on the Minilogue/Prologue which many people dislike because it preserves the transient/attack phase since the envelopes reset when a voice is triggered.

  • @MRTUNA

    Frank Manhands I only was just coming to terms with that this afternoon after spending some serious time with the OB and The P6. I kind of like the way 6 voices interact with that eg behaviour, but it’s not always the best for the situation at hand. The Juno 106 works this way too but I’ve grown to appreciate it. Being a little spoiled with synths it’s not a maker breaker for me but I’m really going to be conscious of that aspect in the future.

    I was a naughty boy and picked up a prologue 16 a few months ago. Underrated synth, especially for the money. "Tuning gate" is probably to thank for that, but it is fixed now. Good comparison with the P6! I think sound wise they are in the same league, but I do prefer the prologue's filter, it is miles ahead. You can get really wild! Also the digital engine and patch stacking makes things deeper in a different way than a mod matrix. Both cool synths. The prophet holds up to its name and cheers to korg for doing something original yet still classic feeling. (100% on the fingerprint problem with the korg, I embrace it but it really bugged me at first. Even a microfiber cloth takes some elbow grease to clean the thing up.)

    I'd say the Prologue for me as well. It comes down to the combination of features, sound and price. Prologue sounds great, offers 16 voices instead of 6 and has a 5 octave keyboard for, well nowdays less than a thousand dollars which is crazy. 16 voice analogue for under a thousand dollars is really great value. If you buy new it's at $1700 now I think while the P6 trades at $3500 new. Kudos to Sequential they make great stuff but at these price point it is a bit hard to swallow. Both synths are fantastic and sound great but one of them is less than half the price and offers, well, more. And I think the P6 loses just on that alone.

    Hey at 1:20 you mention that the oscillators on your old minilogue went out of tune. I have a Minilogue right now and it'll start in tune and within 5 minutes (or less) of being on a unison mode, I'll get nasty out of tune notes, that's not coming from the detune feature of the unison. Great video....I have the Prologue 8 and a Prophet Rev 2 16 and am constantly blown away by the sonic bliss from the Prologue....it’s absolutely an addiction for me. I really like the ease that you can sculpt motion driven patches . The sound is completely complementary with the Prophet ...just has its own sound and it’s really really beautiful. Thanks for the tactile description along with the comparison you obviously are a great musician who appreciates each instrument for their individual tones and individuality. I don’t want my Prologue to sound like every other synth in my studio....what’s the point then..... I could care less about how many filters etc.....sound sculpting is just the start for me...I want to cut tracks and play out. Both the Korg and the Prophet sound killer in live play. Also Korg has not yet released their programming kit where 16 wave programs and 16 modulations can be downloaded....this will open up the Kong’s architecture in share format and is future thought for users. Thanks

But it's not even fit to be in the same room as the Prophet 6 (DM12 nor Prologue) both will cheapen the experience, Prophet 6 is a king of modern synths and in actual music it'll show up a DM12 and esp Prologue pretty fast.

    I`ve found the DM12 to be amazing for ambient, pad, FX, soundscapes, noisescapes due to the amazing mod matrix and FX engine. On the other hand if you strip out all FX, learn it`s functions and perhaps utilise more than one voice of polyphony you can do a suprisingly solid bass sound for example that you won`t find in it`s presets. As I`ve been finding out in recent times it really does pay to know as much about synthesis as possible to extract the most from any gear

    The Prophet-6 has a wonderful filter and sound and the presets just don't seem to do justice to the beauty of its filter, especially the low pass which is fantastic. The programmers must have got too used to harsh synth sounds. I've had the P6 for 4 months now and I'm getting to realize its depth. I can't resist it now. I also really like the feel of the controls. Four octaves is a bummer though; the P6 sound justifies six really, like a T-8.
