I know it seems as though I must. Have known there was a tranny issue. But I swear I have never had an issue. I park it on a lift above a 70 Chevelle sometimes. That’s the confidence I “had” in the car . I think Jamie did it for Clicks!! 😂😂

I had a red 68 bee back in 1975, it had been used for drag racing before I got it. Awesome car 383 rally dash. It went to save a low mileage yellow 68 bee that was totaled after I blew the engine. The man who got her traded me a 1967 coronet 500 383 console bucket seat dark copper in color car for her. Oh the good old days

I had a dark green 68 Coronet 500 Ragtop for a project car back in the 80's. Halfway through rust removal surgery, life circumstances changed, so i had to sell the car. This video makes me miss that car.

A+ for using the word “pablum.”

About 2 months ago, that same mysterious puddle appeared under my 69 Coronet. I turned it off, put some floor dry down, and left it..... for now. Please show the seal replacement or whatever the fix turns out to be. Thanks for sharing!

Wow what a beautiful car! How does pulling a distributor cause a tranny to leak? They aren't even connected. I suppose the answer for all your leaks is because it can, and it's you doing it, that streak of luck that you have, good luck with it Jamie! Sorry about the mess, but love the old Mopars. My first car was a '69 Coronet 500. Not a street racer with a 318, 2-bbl but I agree with you; beautiful body lines for sure. Re: recurving the diz. I understand that some guys love fiddling with the inside of a distributor and dropping tiny parts on the floor, but I would recommend a Progression Ignition unit. I got one a year ago for my '65 Impala and I curve it from my cell phone. Love it. BTW, I am running 24* initial timing at idle, 29* in drive at 600 RPM with no vac advance at idle but additional 10* added in sequentially from 1500-3000 RPM.

I totally like the idea of quickly and easily changing a timing curve, but I have zero interest in putting a little computer inside my distributor that I have to talk to with an app. I just don’t want that in my classic car. I hope that makes sense.

Very straight looking car, but that trans leak is a major bummer.

I don't envy having to make that awkward phone call. "You know how your car was brought in for a tune-up job? Yeah, about that......"

It's one of the toughest parts of being a mechanic, IMO.

When I clean up fluid leaks I use either a 6 inch or a 4 inch drywall knife and a metal dust pan. I use the knife to push the fluid into the dust pan and just dump it into a drain pan until most of fluid is removed. That method removes fluid amazingly quickly and minimizes the amount of mess and rags needed to remove the spill. Try it next time you will be amazed at how efficient it is at removing fluid spills.

In the late 80s I bought a 67 Dart GT-S hardtop with the leaning tower of cower I mean power. As many of my friends were also gearheads and my dad was cool with project cars, this car was beautiful and not a project, I could have easily swapped K members and did as a friend did which was 340 heads on a newer 318, purple cam, steel crank etc and swapped the driveline out too. It was kept the way it left the factory like the many other survivors I've had from VWs to my daily which is even rarer at 12,300 total built over 3 years. Use it or lose it.

Thats what i like about you Jamie, you take the time to make sure its right, you take them out and actually drive them, to make sure youve got the most optimal ignition timing, no spark knock, and no kick back when cranking, instead of just throwing number at it and calling it "good". The world needs more people like you in it. Thank you for that.

Nice car and its a good thing you had the car in for tuning and found the other leaks or he could have been left stranded somewhere.

That's the whole mixed blessing of the situation. DDG certainly didn't need a major leak, but at the same time, if a leak was to happen, it's way better to happen at a mopar specific shop than to happen on the road somewhere.

Wow, that totally sucks dude. That would be my kinda luck working on a car. This is why I have a lot of respect for what you and my mechanic friends do. There must have been a lot of off camera cussing going on after that happened.

Yeah Jamie I hate when that stuff happens and it only makes a person look like they did something wrong which they did not and now instead of three hours job it's a 15 hour job and good luck with the fix I'm so glad that you've got vocational school watching your videos you interject so much fun into everything that then poor people are gonna go to their first job and they're not gonna find the funny character mechanic they're working there which is unfortunate and the way mechanics are dropping out because of issues with pay and flat rate and high tech crap that you don't get paid for I don't blame them so you vortec people think hard and long and make sure you're tuned up on electronics because that is what it's gonna be 90% of the time anything electrical thanks Jamie

Hmm, this looks like one of my days sometimes. I've sometimes thought that one way to solve every leak is to just some build sort of a pan under the car to catch everything, and make sure to include a drain plug so it can be drained occasionally.

It makes for a very clean look. I’ve never seen that done before, and do have to say I find it interesting. Especially with the sublime - the green and flat black play together well.

For me, the original gauges are a huge part of the appeal. Admittedly, the quirkiness of the ammeter might convince me to make a few behind-the-scene updates, but I love the original look.

That staining on the LH exhaust pipe just after the collector and crossover says the trans has been at least seeping for a while.

Yes - but from somewhere else forward the back. Speedo cable or shift shaft seal, not sure which yet. I was going to mention that but didn’t get it in the video.

The hard line was seeping for a bit. I found it was a bit loose on a routine trip on the rack. That was the cause of that stain, but good eye!

One of THOSE days.

Holy shit man, I've seen pump seals leave a drop or two over a couple of hours but nothing like that. It's the Old Faithful of transmission leaks! Still not sure how you work on that without sunglasses, maybe it looks brighter on camera but God dang!

Op, just seen the rest of the vid, yep, welp i think the trans has got ta come out, front seal and torque converter bushing... Ive found that (and im sure you have to), that when someome dosent put the converter into the transmision "gently" the bushing can come lose, and voula, front seal no longer seals... I put my 727 together and had to pull it back out for the exact same reason. Moper strong!!

I’ve seen a bushing disintegrate once before, but I never found the root cause. I fixed it and it did it again, which led me to believe it was probably a transmission dowel alignment issue. Hopefully this one becomes obvious as I get into it.

That got WAY out of hand WAY too quickly! Beautiful car though, glad he is finding the parts to put it back to a true Coronet 500. The 500 has some beautiful trim and details. Those tail lights are epic!

My 68 Coronet 440 was dark green.

Sorry but I can relate to your experience here. That kind of crap always happens when I am trying to fix something. Luckily I fix stuff for a living! Life is great!

LoL- know all about "Job creep" and things getting done right. If you've seen the ol' Valiant sedan...brakes, suspension, steering, interior, weather stripping, power train, consumable parts, chassis stiffening, wheels & tires, interior fixes (front bench bottom, carpet, headliner), electronics/counter measures, radio retrofit, speakers, remove the vinyl top & paint the metal white

I don’t mind the black out trim beings it’s kind of a hodge podge thing the way it is, it’s got kind of a unique sinister look. I don’t mind that digital gauge cluster either, I’d rather have analog gauges but the dash/gauge cluster on those cars was kinda boring looking for as cool as the rest of the car was.

I installed one of those Summit electronic distributor upgrade kits in my '72 W200, and it would start and run great, but after 15 min. of driving, it would usually lose spark when trying to re-start. Turned out to be that bent pickup increasing the gap out of spec. That small gap increase at the wide end of the bent pickup causes a loss of spark after things heat up. Seems that bent pickup is a feature they all come with from Summit.

Yeah I’m not thrilled about it. We’ll see if this one has the same issue. Considered filing it straight but that might do more harm than good. I had that same exact issue with an original Chrysler distributor years ago in my Challenger.

Some days it do be like that...

MP sold distributors with that type of advance for a while. The little plastic gauges came separate. Got one in the shed, somewhere.....

I’ve been looking for a pair of bucket seats for my 64 B body and so far all I’ve found was later high back and that’s not what I want because I’m like you and want it to be correct.

Seems like a perfectly normal day to me…

On my 1972 Charger, it developed a transmission leak after I bought it. Suspect is a cracked torque converter. Have not taken anything apart to see yet.

Did that firing order thing om my marine 440. Was all wrong, duh, reverse rotation motor will get you every time.

I learned that the hard way many years ago. I knew, of course, but I mostly do small blocks and forgot. So lately I’ve been doing so many big blocks… now the problem is reversed. Haha.

I wouldn't say those 0.050" numbers are agressive - that's 31 degrees from 0.006" duration, and more like a warranty build item. Given the 2.14" intake on those heads, the cam is probably fun and near middle of the road for flat tappet kind of performance. Good luck with that transmission.

I am comparing to the small block grinds I usually deal with. There’s a big inch difference between a 360 and a 440 that I need to keep in mind. But it seemed like relatively low lift for that duration number to me.

I still kick my old but 20 years ago 68 bee , 383 auto, b5 blue, there hard to come by here in Pa

It looks like "better then stock - flipper edition" but Bilstein shocks are way too expensive for that. I am soooooo lucky I did not buy 72 Dart few years back. It was stroked 318 with alu heads and 4 speed, 90s seats and digital dash. My "oh shit" sense was tingling from the moment I saw the seats. This car really reminds me that Dart. Better parts and paint but my "oh shit" sense started tingling the moment I saw the blacked out trim. 😁

Talking about going off the rails, how about this one? A buddy of mine & myself were just doing a simple detailing job for a car show on his 360, tunnel rammed C Cab for a car show & wound up blowing the whole car apart, painting the frame rails to match the body, & doing a complete re-polish on everything! 🤣🤣🤣🤣 Was painted Lil Red Express Truck red w/the graphics. Ran it's ass off too!

Could you discuss thermostats and carburetor tunning ?

In what regard? Fueling differences based on operating temperature? That’s kind of beyond my pay grade. There is a lot to getting the fuel mixture right in a particular combination. The best way I know (without a wide band or other wizardry) is by listening to the engine, watching and smelling the exhaust, and reading the plugs.

@@DeadDodgeGarage I had a similar experience changing the oil on a BMW today. I was filling the engine with fresh oil and my hand barely bumped the coolant overflow line with a plastic quick connect and it broke the quick connect spewing some hot coolant all over me as I was trying to plug the hose with the end of my fingers. Glad that happened in the driveway and not on the road because I'm pretty sure a pothole or big speed bump would have broken that.

How do you know if its the seal or the converter? I had the same issue, replaced the entire tranny for a rebuilt one, but not the converter. Went driving, same thing happens after an afternoon of driving. Pool of fluid just gushing out. The only same thing is the converter. So.. how would In determine if thats te issue or not?

I'm going to talk about this a lot in the next video. But the likely causes in your case would be A) a converter construction issue, or B) a transmission alignment problem. The dowels locate the transmission to the back of the block, and they may be off. The question that follows, of course, is why this wasn't an issue from the factory, but became an issue later. I can't answer that. But I'm going to try to devise a way to narrow down what the real issue is with this car, and hopefully that will help - because including yours, I now know of at least 3 cars that have done the exact same thing.

I have several different thoughts. It’s going to be interesting to see what happened. Just such a random thing to happen. Alignment was definitely a thought I had, a friend had this issue twice with his Dart.

@@DeadDodgeGarage Here in Australia, Chrysler thought it was a serious enough problem the factory service manuals recommended checking converter to crank hub runout any time a transmission was removed. Apparently, a flexplate can do only so much!

I’d take a well optioned Coronet R/T or 500 over a Super-Bee any day. Even built as a clone from a regular 2 door Coronet post or hardtop…..at least it would be a different clone. The truth is if I ever get my hands on and / or put together a big block 4 speed B body it’s never getting sold anyway so I wouldn’t be offended if it wasn’t numbers matching as long as it looks, runs and drives like the real deal.

A clone doesn’t bother me at all if it’s for your pleasure, and not for defrauding a buyer. But I’d like to see factory correct details. For ‘68, that means a post car and a different color.

Looks like to me a rear main seal. Or a front main seal for the transmission. On that tan distributor cap, isn't that one cracked? Thought I did see a piece missing off of it. Nice car though

Yes, that’s why I chose that cap to drill holes in. I am only using it to check rotor phasing. I made sure the slot is lined up with the intact side. It’s absolutely transmission fluid, so it has to be coming from the front pump / torque converter seal.

Since it’s a hard top they should have cloned an R/T, other than the obvious act of not cloning it at all, but what I’m seeing looks like a nice car.

Keep an eye out for a brake fluid leak. That car wants to be perfect and leak all the things. It’s pretty, though.
