A-Body MONSTER! 1965 Plymouth Barracuda 360 Five Speed Build Gets Buttoned Up And Thoroughly Tested
Автокөліктер мен көлік құралдары
On today's episode, we're looking at something special - Mitchell's 1965 Plymouth Barracuda. Everything about this build is incredible. From the four wheel Wilwood disk brakes, to the incredibly well built 360 with Magnum heads and EFI, the Tremec TKX transmission, and the fabricated 8 3/4 rear axle, no expense was spared in turning this factory 273 3 speed Barracuda into a ripping, snarling, handling monster. The project isn't exactly "finished" (not that any project ever is,) but at least we can take it for a test drive... I wonder what that's like.

Thx for the nice comments. Jamie definitely has the best viewers. I was a bit apprehensive since, in case it wasn't clear, the car was just bolted together to get it on a trailer. I'm getting ready to start a channel so there will be plenty more action on the barracuda plus other mopar's, dune buggies and motorcycles. Don't hold your breath, it'll happen eventually. Thanks again
That’s one angry fish
So pretty! I want one so bad now
In '73 I bought a '64 Barracuda. Went with a local dealer to an auction to help drive back anything he bought. Across the block came the Barracuda, absolutely cherry inside and out, 273 factory 4-speed, that surely burnt a quart of oil just driving onto the block. Told the dealer to buy it, I'd go to $500, got it for $350. I had a 340 stroked to 408 with a six pack and a 9" cutdown for an A body. Originally built for a dirt stockcar but went a different route. Weeks work with the frame, homemade bars, front discs/spindles off the same AAR the 340 came from, and everything fit like a latex glove. I was happy and the girls loved that dropdown trunk panel. I knew I should of kept that car for life-still try to kick my own butt for not doing so-but didn't.
That thing is WICKED! Love it. Mitchell, you're awesome for building your brothers car to 'Monster' status!

You just drove my very first car i owned. The same color without the hood scope. Also I'm 72. Wish I had my cuda back. Even stock It was a fun car to drive.
I had 3 Barracudas and 4 other Valiants of that generation. I was happy, but I'm done with them! When my 1965 273 Barracuda had no rings left, it was sweet to just drop a spare 318 into the hole and gain torque! It got rear-ended less than a week later, but I found a '66 Barracuda (with rust painted over) and this time did it "right" with a 340 (2.02 X-heads), a 727 tranny, 8.75 rear end, etc. A year later the subframe rust got too bad to pass inspection, so all the goodies went into a '66 Valiant Signet, but that rusted out after another year. I finally found a rust-free West Texas '65 Barracuda with a slant 6, but after purchase, the work needed to fit everything into another narrow pre-67 hole with no room near the steering box etc. just didn't seem like fun any more. Fun involved slipping a SBC mill into a Vega and still having room to reach everything.

Yeah… I love these things, but they sure don’t have room to play under the hood. Fitting headers for example is absolutely ridiculous - as admired in this video. GM sure made things easy, didn’t they? I could be slightly jealous.

I have a nicely restored and highly upgraded 65 Cuda. I put a crate 318 withe an Edelbrock 4bbl in it. Every where I drive it around the outskirts of Portland people are drawn to it. Like myself they have not seen another one for decades. Bigger wheels with mags really improve the stance. The torque and power are enough for fun. strong pulling acceleration. Had to put discs on the front for safe stopping.
I like that car! As far as people thinking they're ugly? I totally disagree but then again I Loved my old 440 powered 62 Plymouth Sport Fury (an old street rat I turned into a wanna be bracket car) I built it mostly myself, welded home made sub frame connectors, 6 point roll bar, gutted doors, plexiglass door glass rear quarter windows even a lexan windshield. And I still' love the body style of a 62 Plymouth Sport Fury...
Love this car. Dunno how I missed this vid. The sound it rumbles is pure bliss!

WOW This car is UPGRADED EVERYWHERE I SHOULD KNOW , I have a 1965 Barracuda too bought it 1986 for 250$ a Senior in high school Have a 1973 , 360 LA block now(5th motor) 1967 904 trans with 3200 stall converter (2nd). Original trans got ripped in half by the 360 engine and a 8 3/4 rear end with 3.91 gears!!(original was 7 1/4 with 3.28 gears) Sucks on the highway (4 grand at 65 mph) but worked great at Bandimere speedway till the engine broke, lifter failed and damaged the Camshaft Trashed the bearings, shut engine off after oil pressure went to 10 psi. 450 horsepower easy to get with 360 small block and still be streetable. Want to upgrade to stroked 408 small block next!!! 500 ft.Pounds. Car is 2700 pounds , 3000 lbs with me in it and tools in that Tiny tiny trunk. Would cost me 20 grand to upgrade to the level of this car with me doing all the Labor AWESOME CAR!!!
Never heard so many squeaks and squeals coming from one car at one time lol But you got them ironed out. And yes it is a beast. Cool car.
My first car was a 65 Dodge Dart 270 2 door post with the 225 slant six and column shifted automatic. I remember I had charging issues sometimes, especially in the cold of winter. The voltage regulator wasn't build into the alternator, was mounted on the firewall. I would just rap on the regulator box and the internal contacts would un-stick, and the car charging system would function again. Just found your channel and looking forward to watching more episodes.

That’s awesome. On my ‘67 Barracuda, I was absolutely amazed when I got it running and the crappy old mechanical regulator that had been out in the elements with no hood for years still worked. Cool build. I've always wanted to build an all aluminum Keith Black Hemi and stick it in a 65 or 66 Cuda. Torque arm, watts link, 35 spline axles, TKX or six speed magnum. IMO, the looks of the car is improved with rear radiused wheel arches. A Valiant Station wagon has radiused rear quarter panels.

I have a '66 that I have dreams of building. (once I retire) I was DEEP in the Mopar world back in the mid 80's, but I see A LOT has changed since then. Is there a way to get a detailed build sheet on this? I would LOVE to go the same direction. (But, with a frame connector, and a standard 8 3/4 axle, with a locker in it) Hope to hear from you, (or the owner) soon!
I had one of those. I swapped in a 69 318 and a m-22 crash box. Then it needed different gears. I wound up with a really nice build.

Nice seeing this awesome 1965 'Cuda... This reminds me of a '65 Plymouth Valiant I once owned. There are some similar/matched body lines between the two car models. The rear tail lamps and reverse lamps are interchangable or pretty much the same, best I recall. My '65 had the inline six three on the tree manual tranny. Edit: p.s. I should have mentioned how reliable that Valiant was back in the late 1970's and early eighties when I was young and broke, paycheck to paycheck. I did finally pass the Valiant off to a friend that had the time and a bit more money to keep 'Val' daily driving on the highways of my old stomping grounds in the San Francisco Bay Area.

That’s awesome. Yep, the Barracuda is just a fast back Valiant, so although the roof, grille and other small things are different, the body lines and lower sheet metal are shared between the two cars. Lots and lots of similarities.
Awesome car,, love the color and wheels! Would be sweet if it was stock, and the mods are all perfect. I'd want sway bars and maybe some corner happy shocks on mine, otherwise I wouldn't change a thing... Definitely no wax! Yep - bars and subframe connectors are coming. I’m not sure what the plan is for shocks, but if they match everything else he has done… haha. This isn’t a drop in Pertronix, it’s a complete distributor that they build. But essentially, it’s their ignitor 3 module in a GM type body adapted to fit a Mopar engine - very much like an MSD. It’s a nice setup, but the advance limiting deal is definitely not sophisticated… I bet some stronger limiting straps wouldn’t be too hard to make.

If it’s a “daily” cruiser, I’m all about an automatic these days. If it’s a go fast, screw around, stoplight action street destroyer… it’s gotta be the stick. People have reminded me that my Demon would be faster on the strip with an automatic, and that I ditch the four speed. Haha… no. But in my ‘68, I would never take the automatic out. That’s the character of the car. It’s all about what you want it to be.
What an awesome car! Sounds mental! You demonstrate that the brakes are excellent. So, no issues with vacuum for the booster considering the 231/239/110 cam? My first car was a '65 Barracuda, but not like this one. Mine had the 273 2-barrel and automatic with open differential, 7.00x13 tires on 4.5" wheels, no swaybars, and tiny drum brakes all round. It still couldn't spin even one tire, the body lean through turns was alarming, and the brake fade was positively life-threatening - ask me how I know. But a ton of fun and cool factor for a first car.
@DeadDodgeGarage
Жыл бұрын
Yeah this thing just sounds like it wants to eat your head. Zero problems with brake vacuum - the booster works perfectly. I have not yet seen an engine that, when timed properly with a modified advance curve, didn’t make enough vacuum at idle for the booster to work. The tiny drums and lack of front sway bar are definitely not ideal. The wee tires could be related too. And I have to wonder about your old 273 - I’ve seen them do some pretty impressive tire shredding. But funny enough I made a video today about how these cars can be quite fun without all this extra expense, using my Demon as exhibit A. Look for that tomorrow. Haha.
