Introducing our *1950 DODGE CORONET* Project. It's a Learning Curve But it's All Just Nuts and Bolts

****Help a guy out by commenting below, point us in the right direction***
So it was maybe a year ago at Vintage Torque Fest in Dubuque Iowa, my wife, Brenda, fell in love with this 1950 Dodge Coronet. I wasn't really sharing her fondness for this project and tried talking her out of it but here we are.
The previous owner claimed it would start with a squirt of gas but zero compression in cylinders 1 and 2 makes this nearly impossible, we're leaning toward a head gasket issue.
It's currently on jack stands while we take care of shocks, brake lines, gas tank and fuel lines, just trying to get as much stuff done while it's on stands and then get it on the ground and take care of the head gasket.
The previous owner also mentioned Gyro Matic? or semi-automatic transmission, but I just don't know. Anyway we're learnin.

"Take it apart, put it back together, and hopefully it's better". I like that.
There definitely we’re some changes by the 60s. Such a cool historical piece. Gonna be a fun Journey 🇺🇸

Thanks large Foot. Happy 4th
It’s Fluid Drive which worked in my 2 door long wheelbase 1950 Coronet. Andy Bernbaum was good for NOS and basic parts.
My Dad had a 49 when I was a kid. This brings back good memories. Looks to be in really well preserved condition. If it has the semi automatic transmission you mentioned, it would say "Gyro-matic" on the fender nameplate and the clutch pedal would have stamped into the rubber "Safety Clutch". There are lots of articles describing how this transmission works as well as KZread videos.
Jay, Your Dad here. I had 1951 Dodge 2 door. It was my 2nd car.

Technology has changed so much since 1950 but the cars built back then were, like you said, built to LAST. Today's cars have no chrome but those cars are loaded! Your car looks pretty much rust free from the outside. I also think that cars from the 1950's had the nicest gauges and interiors.
That dash is beautiful and your tool shed is legit i want to see a tour of that looks like you have that thing dialed in sir!!

Nice Bounce sheet, LOL I do the same thing to help keep mice out of my vehicles. Not an 8 3/4 and no where near as strong from what I have been told. My 42 pickup has the same rear end. My guess is the driver doesn't have a auto dome light switch because they have access to the manual switch. Back in those days they thought differently than today.

Ford Chrysler were positive ground. GM was negative… Really confused me on my Oakland when I first started working on it. Yes, I do believe that is an oil filter canister that you pointed to That box on the firewall was the voltage regulator for sure. Fun episode. Right in the Wheelhouse of the stuff I love working on.

Looks mint Jaybo!!! Shes gonna be sweet when its done...I havent fooled around with the early girls either...maybe the dome light switches are like that for picking up passengers on that side? The unit on the front screen could be a traffic light indicator? I have one from the US but its a different shape..Love this old banger, she will be a cool cruiser for you and wifey!!

@@79asspin Omg lol!
Those GD car's back then we're built like a damn tank but everything on them was made simple but complicated all at the same time, know what I mean? My old man like that era of cars, especially the Nash's and Hudson's and that kind of deal. When I about 6 years old he had a old 49? Plymouth, looked kinda like that one, but we lived in Chicago then and that frickin thing had bad rings in it and smoked like a sumbitch and he drove it from Chicago down to KY here and the damn thing made it too without any problems, and he drove the sob around down here for quite a while. I don't know, like I said those old cars were built like tanks, shit more like a old Timex watch, they take a licking and keep on ticking, haha, you remember that? Anywho, I'm sure you fellars will get it sorted out. 🎆🎇🤘✌️

Thanks Doug, Yeah it kind of amazes me how most of the components, of older vehicles can be taken apart cleaned up and it's considered rebuilt. They learned that selling parts is big business, new stuff crumbles and turns to junk, gotta buy a new one.
It’s called the Gyro Matic Two speeds in power range Two speeds in drive or high range Electronics on carb (yes on carb ) and ignition shift the gears only once when you lift your foot off the gas! The clutch is only for shifting to drive or reverse No need for depressing clutch till you park or need to reverse!!

I had a big block 65 Cornett. With single master. 😮😮 cylinder. One pump warning breaks. Second pump breaks did nothing. When it spring a leak.Fkn scary ! .. But they bled air out by pumping a million times. .Air would go up to master cylinder out. .

I want to update it but for now we'll stick with the single pot.
The passenger doors only have dome light switches!! Look again on the front door the switch is there under the hinges Dodge thought no one ever should enter the car on the driver’s side for safety reasons!!
