Project Royal Enfield Part 1: RE Classic 350 DNA Stage 2 Kit - Does It Really Improve Anything?

Автокөліктер мен көлік құралдары

Hey there, Welcome to Project Royal Enfield. This is a fun little mini series i'm working on involving my 2022 Classic 350. The goal of this series is to see what can be done to improve the performance of this little single cylinder 350cc bike. Can we make it quicker?, More well rounded? more capable at high way speeds? Who knows.
In this video (part 1) I'm swapping out the stock air filter & intake for the Stage 2 kit by DNA.
It's the quickest and easiest modification you could do on these 350's. It's around $125 so for the price I'd hope there's some sort of boost in the performance of the bike. Others swear by the Stage 2 DNA kit but i'm keeping an open mind with it. Let's see what happens after the install.
I may have a few extra videos in the series where i change out non performance parts like swapping the seat, levers, mirrors, lighting, ect... We'll see where this series takes us.
Chapters
1. 0:00 Introduction to "Project Royal Enfield", The Goal
2. 2:06 What The Kit Comes With & Comparing Intake Openings
3. 3:49 Easiest Install Ever (Only Need a Screwdriver)
4. 4:51 Initial Ride After Install
5. 5:30 Sound Difference (Before & After)
6. 7:51 Any Upgrade To It's Performance?

    I drove about a 1000 kilometer's with the DNA filter. For me it's great. Yes, the throttle is far more responsive. I had 10,000 kilometer's on the clock with the old filter and I had to get used to the acceleration when going through a corner. But the filter really excels when riding against a headwind. I live in a rather windy province of the Netherlands. With strong headwinds it took ages to get to 80 kilometer's an hour (if possible) but with the DNA filter I could easily push the bike to 100 kilometer's an hour. So yes, it is surely worth the money. The English supplier Hitchcock stated a 10% increase in power and I think that's true.

    Low displacement bikes gain alot more from the average HP vs big bikes. A handful of small improvements can net quite an improvement. I installed a K&N filter, de-restricted CDI, and iridium plugs on my CB 250 and gained a nice bump in all around performance. The KN filter gave it a throaty intake sound much like this Royal btw. Changing up the sprockets, upped my top speed and downed alotta vibration at hwy speed. Go aluminum sprockets, the weight loss is worth some perf. Your biggest bump in low end torque is going to ultimately wind down to getting a full blown Big Bore Kit w/Cam. It can be pricey if not doing the job yourself that is, and advisable only if you plan to hang onto the bike, but after feeling the difference especially from where the bike first was, youll be happy you did it. Mind you, its never gonna be any type of "track weapon", but it can most definitely be a robust well rounded bike thats enjoyable to ride for lifetimes ; )

    Some further possibile mods to increase performance: DID X-Ring gold chain (stronger chain), Red rooster exaust (supposedly one that gives a bump in performance and sound), Aluminum sprockets to save weight, NGK Iridium Spark Plugs (supposedly will boost the engine performance due to better tolerances), fitting a pair of ABS rings with fewer slots that could possibly raise the point in which the ECU trips the speed limiter (This is a BIG maybe), another possibility may be checking if there is a peice of metal or a stop on the back of the speedometer faceplate which trips when the maximum speed is hit (some bikes use this method for speed limiters).

    I have a RE 500 and a RE 650 Int. The 650 has plenty of power and is smooth but the riding position, for me is all wrong, back aches, bent wrists, ankles tangled in the foot pegs. I am selling this bike. The 500 has a better position for me, and I prefer it's aesthetics. The power is adequate, but the vibrations leave my hands and feet Numb after an hour of riding and the seat is, well, awful. Aftermarket attempts to correct these issues have failed. I test rode a Classic 350 and I would have to say, it is the most comfortable 2 wheeled conveyance I have ever ridden. For me, the position is perfect. The engine is smooth, very smooth. The seat was incredibly comfortable. I was ready to trade in my 650 for one, but they only offered $2,000 dollars in trade-in (?!?) I took the 350 up to 60mph and I saw the problem. I understand that Freeway riding is not this bike's forte, but freeway riding is an inevitability here in the States. You cannot go anywhere without at least a short stint on the Freeway. I need a working bike, not just a weekend joy rider on country roads or a downtown errand bike. . My 500 does that just fine, as does my scooter. I could jettison every other bike I have for this bike with it's qualities IF it had Two, just Two more horsepower. This review is great, the descriptive analysis of the product and it's effect are clear and specific. This gives me hope. I look forward to further videos on this project bike. Subscribed.

    Thank you for perpetuating the myth of the ten minute idle😂. In the early days of EFI it was possible to reflash the ECU using custom software. Both Royal Enfield and Bosch have stated that current EFI systems adjust in nanoseconds, not ten minute increments. The additional noise makes the bike feel different. Your statements about the “feel” of the motor bear this out. I did the air filter, Hitchcock’s free flowing exhaust and the Fuel X Pro. Altogether they probably add 0.5 horsepower. Any performance gain is likely caused by a lighter wallet! Mainly the bike sounds better. I returned it to stock configuration before I sold the bike. It was once again quiet. Honestly, going up one tooth on the front sprocket was the best and cheapest mod I made. This allowed me to cross an intersection before shifting into second instead of shifting halfway through. So the bike sounds better with all that done. The rest, including the ten minutes of idling, are pure placebo.

    I guess it depends on what type of performance you're looking for. I know that the stock exhaust is restrictive as all hell so there's no surprise that a full exhaust will make a significant change. But definitely the stage 2 DNA made a massive difference with the uphill performance, throttle response, and being more comfortable at higher speeds. The Cam is another story but i have to have someone install that one for me. Engine work is not something im confident with.

    This is by far not everything, but I think this covers the main things you can do to improve the bike: Camshaft from hitchcocks, rear sprocket drive tooth mod (either remove or add a tooth depending on if you want speed or acceleration... Also found at hitchcocks), this DNA air filter upgrade, DNA cover, a full exhaust upgrade, FuelX Pro, Better tires (maybe?), and upgrade breaks (maybe?). I also saw a product called the Magnum Revolution-Pro REV Limiter CDI box, which supposedly connects to the stock ECM board of the motorcycle and allows you to increase the maximum RPM, allowing higher speeds, as Royal Enfield sells the bikes with a intentional limiter... Probably for longevity of the motor, but I've heard in Brazil they removed the limiter from their bikes due to legal reasons... I guess it works fine without it?

    Something else I want to look into should I get this bike is if I can attach one of those classic style leather seats (found on ebay) with actual functioning springs like previous royal enfield models had. Otherwise I might look into having a custom bracket fabricated that would allow an old seat like that to work on the new frame. It'd be super neat and it'd probably help feel nicer alongside a gel liner underneath the leather which Mother Road Customs has said they could do alongside redoing the leatherwork so it's a bit higher quality. Best of both worlds I imagine. Correct me if I'm wrong on that! Perhaps they removed the functioning springs for a reason other than cost.

  • @FoxParasyte

    @FoxParasyte

    I do have plans on the camshaft upgrade and the fuelX lite. I didn't think about changing the sprocket tooth size although i have debated on upgrading them to ones of better quality... including the chain. I'm 50/50 with the limiter removal. I'm fine with the top speed at 75. 80 would be perfect in my travels but i'm not sure if being able to just change 5 mph if that's even possible. I've not heard of the Mag Revo box, i'll have to look into it. Honestly i'd be more happy upgrading the acceleration a bit, rather than the top speed. My concern with removing that limiter is pushing the bike to a point where it's damaging the engine. Im wanting to basically turn this thing into a rural/city powerhouse but at the same time keeping it's engine reliability.

  • @izaicslinux6961

    @izaicslinux6961

    Жыл бұрын

    @@FoxParasyte I imagine you could do tiny increments of lifting off the limiter (as that's what that Magnum product claims to allow) and as long as you don't do anything too far it would be okay. The only issue with down gearing the rear sprocket for acceleration is that it requires higher engine RPM to maintain the max speed, which because of the limiter isn't possible, and as a result you would loose more speed on the already rather slow classic. I definitely wouldn't do sustained high speeds on the bike stock, let alone with a limiter bump and other mods though as that would probably strain the engine quite a bit. However, to have that extra bit of speed for emergencies or should you need to hop on the highway quickly and then hop off, it'd be great to have.

  • @FoxParasyte

    @FoxParasyte

    Жыл бұрын

    Ok so if that Magnum does allow small increments i'm probably going to look into that. I don't want it to go past 85 absolute max. If that's the case about the sprockets i'm probably just going to leave them alone and just replace the chain with a gold X ring. When i get around 3k miles i'll look into the sprockets to see how worn they are. If i don't think they're worth replacing i may just not touch them until the time is ready. Then go for something better made. Yeah running the bike stock at 70 was a bear. You could tell the bike wasn't thrilled. With the open air intake it feels so much less stressed when on highways. Even just that change alone has significantly improved how the bike functions.

    I would not own a tripper nav on my Himalayan if I had the choice. Much better using Google maps and audio directions via my Cardo. And if you really need visual cues, use a clear face tank bag oe Quad-lock

    I've decided heavily against the tripper (having using it myself off a demo bike recently) I'm good just sticking to my Ram mount. Had it for several years and never once had any issues with it. I'm not big about Quad-lock personally but i get why people love it.

    You can get a little more than that with certain mods supposedly. Still, that's at least a 20% improvement in power. Really not bad. Brings it from a bike barely able to keep up with it's weight, to a bike that is a little more light on it's feet per say.

    The trouble with doing mods you end up damaging the bike , it’s a bike to slow down and enjoy the countryside, why didn’t you just buy a faster bike??

  • @FoxParasyte

    @FoxParasyte

    Жыл бұрын

    I have 2 other bikes that are vastly quicker than the royal enfield. It's not about "buying a faster bike" anyone can do that. There is virtually zero evidence to support that changing out things like air intake, exhaust, and installing a fuel pack leads to damaging the bike. Upgrading the camshaft and internal engine parts can possibly lead to problems but you have to go out of your way to do something wrong. Certain bikes like my Yamaha require a tune or a fuel commander when changing the air intake and exhaust, the royal doesn't necessarily need it... but it will improve the performance of the bike long term.
