    I recorded this video only as an installation guide rather than a comparative test of the unit. My bike is not an ideal platform for testing as it is still in its run-in period and so the benefits of wear in could not be seperated from the new filter and box benefits, and so i felt like it would be unfair to review the DNA unit without evidence of its effect. When I uploaded the video I had not yet even had the chance to ride the bike. I only installed it last night, planning to ride this morning. However I have now ridden the bike with the air filter and, without any data to support my opinion, it does feel more responsive and smoother when getting on the throttle, such as after changing gears and then reapplying power it is smoother, there is less delay for the power coming on and less lump. It makes it more pleasant to ride. As for any actual performance gain I doubt there would be any, as the bike is not being re-tuned, it just has better flow and so is reaching its potential torque and power for any given revs with more ease. This part was pretty expensive for its benefits. I'm hoping that the future savings for washing and reusing the filter rather than buying new will offset the upfront cost. I would also if I could have 3D printed the derestricted air box plate, my unit had some shoddy tooling marks and undesirable finish for such an expensive piece, but I was unable to attain an STL file for the piece. Maybe a future project I could look at making something up in blender or solidworks.

    Reminds me of my foolish youth days when I used to slap these "high flowing, high performance filters" on almost EVERYTHING I owned. If performance and not longevity is the only thing in your mind, then by all means, use these "almost see-thru" filters. If you want longevity then the OEM restrictive paper element filter it's the only way to go. ALL these high performance filters let thru the fine silica powder that when mixed with engine oil makes for a great "grinding compound" or valve lapping paste. Not as aggressive and fast acting as such but all the same to the final result. Changing your oil on time or before it's due makes for good results too. Specially with a wet clutch. P.S: Good, clear and simple video. Good work. 👌😊👍

    I never was a performance chaser, even in my younger days. Not a big interest in large capacity or power, this is my 4th motorbike and is the largest capacity I've owned at 350cc! But power was not my intention for this filter and plate, without a retune there would be almost no measurable benefit to power or torque figures, bike wont go faster, people suggesting that 'performance' filters and boxes will make their bikes faster are somewhat misinformed. I'm glad you liked the guide, that's the only reason I made this video, not as a discussion of my reasons for getting this accessory or reviewing it. But I thought I'd correct a few assumptions you and others may have made for why I got this accessory, and I might edit this respone into the video description layer as i have noticed a number of comments like this, or maybe even make a video if people are interested. The 'performance' word is a bit of a loaded term in product descriptions, especially on automobile components. It can mean motorcycle power, acceleration, flow, filtration, economy, sustainability, comfort or reliability all depending on the individual buying the part and their application. For me, I bought this filter because I intend to keep this bike for the next ~30 years. I was looking for i. sustainability, ii. economy and iii. comfort as my primary focus. i. I wanted a long term bike at a point in technology where internal combustion engines are being phased out. Paper filters are a disposable product that will need to be replaced at every service, and who knows long the support for discontinued technology will be around. A washable and serviceable filter I hope will basically last the lifetime of the bike with maintenance. Also saving products from landfill. ii. With a planned 30 years of ownership, the savings on a reusable unit will vastly outweigh the up front cost. iii. Comfort. More so the modified intake with larger diameter and less complicated geometry, but a little bit the air filter, the better flow afforded by this solution will give smoother and more responsive throttle behaviour making general riding more pleasant. It's true that oil filters generally don't perform as well as their paper counterparts, but in ISO5011 testing paper filters achieve ~99.5% filtration, and good quality oiled cotton filter achieve ~99.2% filtration. So measurably worse result, but I would argue not a significant enough value for being a noticeable cause for engine failure. I've only witnessed engine failure on vehicles due to particulate wear in extreme cases such as no filters, damaged filters or lack of maintenance. Especially given that yes indeed I am a prudent and punctual engine oil maintenance fellow I don't expect that the negligible increase in contamination passed the cylinder to have any effect on my engine longevity. So yeah, that was my reasoning behind this purchase! I had just made the video as an installation guide, for people already purchasing this modification and looking to put it on the bike, not to inform their decision. But seems there's a lot of interest and opinion on this particular modification =]

    If you have the time, I would. It's important to get a good tight fit between the filter and plate and plate and air box. The air box is under vacuum during operation, and dirt/dust will take the path of least resistance, so if there's any gap in the foam crush seal or if the filter is angled at all leaving a gap, particulate will find a way in. I'm sure it won't be catastrophic, but it's a simple thing to check and rectify of you have the free time.

  • @MrCombfoot

    @MrCombfoot

    Жыл бұрын

    This is not a forced induction solution, it is only a flow rate solution. The amount of oxygen that the engine will be drawing in at any given part of its fuel map will be the same stoichiometricaly, it will just reach the desired air fuel ratio according to throttle position faster/more efficiently. The ecu that this motorbike has is more than capable for adjusting to these changes, it would deal with changes of leaness/richness with user going up and over mountains readily and these would be more significant changes to fuel/air ratio than the adition of this filter/air box modification. This mod will really just make the bike more pleasant to ride and have minimal effect on performance.

    Good video thanks! I have watched all your vids i am looking at the Hunter 350 as my next bike here in Thailand. Last bike was a Honda Rally which i did 25,000 on travelling around ,it was tall and i was not crazy about the style but a great bike loved it. Now i want a different type of 'dual sport', part stylish scrambler for daily rider and perhaps even sell my scooter and just use the Hunter to nip to the shop and part ADV travel bike. Can i have style and a touring bike in one at a great price? The new Himalaya 450 and Triumph 400X are soon to be released and price and the specs out before i decide but i am on a budget so leaning towards a new Hunter and getting a warranty extended to 5 years with it could be a good investment. I love the Hunter baby Bonneville looks i am going to take one for a test ride and see this week. Its hot here so not having a windscreen might be nice to get airflow through my mesh gear. Looking forward to seeing what you think of the windscreen and rear rack. In my head i want side racks and soft bags and perhaps a rear rack for a waterproof duffle bag and then some 80/20 tires for the roads here. Metzler Karoo fit on the Hunter and i will measure for the Dunlop Mutants.. I like premium tires its my contact patch that keeps me safe.Perhaps a fly screen. Then ride . We dont have many highways and i avoid them regardless when possible.A multi country trip high km journey is what i have in mind. Subscribed keep the vids coming its all food for thought!

    After I get some decent distance on my stock tyres and get my bike past the run-in period I was looking at getting some Shinko 705's, which are about 70/30 tyres. Just because although I live in the city currently, I do trips out to my family a few hours away who live rural and there are some excellent gravel tracks around the area. I was considering producing a first service video which is oil change, filter change and valve adjustment. My bike is already due but I have been very busy with work + heavy rain for weeks (its mid winter here) so i haven't been able to ride. But I'm not sure if people would be looking for service guides, as I just made accessory installation videos. After that I may produce some exploration/vlog videos that I can voice over my opinions on the bike, accessories and just having fun riding. I tried a wide range of bikes from triumph, honda, yamaha, norden, kawasaki and other royal enfields and I really just liked the comfort, position, quality and affordability of the hunter 350. I would definitely suggest going to demo ride as many bikes as you can at dealers, and go with your gut instinct! Your new bike is something you are riding for yourself, so its better to go with what resonates with you rather than what anyone quotes its specifications on a sheet or even what reviewers say. Its a very personal choice. Good luck!

    @@MrCombfoot Thanks yes i need to take my time and try a few bikes before buying the next one, a bike is more then specs much like computers you can have the best spec parts but the sum of the parts sucks. I dont like KTM type bikes although i appreciate the performance i love Japanese for reliability but i need a bit more style at this point.Yes i will spend the next few months mulling over the options i think one has to really fall in love with a bike or at least i do and I am looking for a weekly rental actually for the Hunter right now to really try it out before buying. The Shinko 705 is a great tire if you can get the fitment correct. I like seeing all the step by step videos you are doing so keep that up. Its very useful reference material and your are clear and have good sound and video quality. Exploration vids are great too i loved Australia i spent a few years there would like to come back and ride. Maybe i need to look at shipping a bike down there to do a big loop. I am nearing 60 and dont even social media but i am thinking about starting a YT to document some riding areas and thoughts and equipment in Thailand. I dont like most peoples YT videos as i find its like listening to a narcissist its all about them i dont care about that. I want to know about the bike and the area they are riding not what they ate for lunch . I also think its rude to go film people without asking them especially here in Thailand so i have not found an interesting YT motorcycle channel here. It is really useful to hear thoughts of other riders but i guess it invites 'know it alls" to come tell you how it is as well haha.DO you know of any good forums? The main RE one does not have a Hunter category yet its partly why reviewing YT videos is useful to me these days then i can go ride the bike and make up my own mind but have some pointers or questions to look at. Its a bit of trial and error owning a bike plus its a feeling thing, we love or hate bikes to some degree because its so personal. For some reliability and simplicity is their benchmark and for others its specs and power that they seek. If you have not checked out this channel i find it brilliant.Stuart loves RE bikes but he thinks about things in a different way then most. I find his channel quite useful. Same with yours so look forward to more vids. www.youtube.com/@stuartfillingham/videos He has some good Hunter videos.

    7 ай бұрын

    After making any fueling or flow changes, its good practice to let it Idle for a bit. I suggest 15 minutes, which is on the long end, just to be safe. It gives the ECU time to adapt, and to warm up a bit and continue adapting at not just cold starting. It's also good to give you time to check over and see if you have left any bolts undone, or forgot to remove some packaging or plastic. Start the bike, let it idle, give it a visual check over, put away your tools and it should be good to go.

    I believe there may be some small difference in the design; the classic, meteor and bullet use the same plate which is PART No. 93108 Whereas the hunter uses PART No. 93107, which ads a locator hole. I think that may be the only difference, and the rest of the dimensions are the same, but I would purchase the correct part for the particular bike. I don't believe there is a significant price difference.

    We all do this sort of thing, but until you modify the exhaust system there will be no benefit. No point in making a bigger hole at one end of a system if there's still a tiny hole at the other end. You can save money on the air-filter cover by simply taking a jigsaw to the original rather than buying a separate plate. :)

  • @MrCombfoot

    The air intake is still behind a panel that prevents any stray rain or water splashing coming in. Although I avoid riding in the rain, I have been caught out and ridden in torrential rain and got home in floodwater. As long as the water line is below the air intake height, I see no reason to believe that there is any way hydro locking could occur. The design of the original part is likely designed to meet cost, emissions and sound testing for the EU standards, otherwise I'm sure they would probably have designed the part in the same way as these aftermarket ones.

    Can you tell us where you found out you had to idle the bike for 15 minutes? Where is it written down? I don't think this engine employs a "learning" ECU, though happy to be proved wrong. Even so, surely there's no measurable difference in air flow at idle, because the air flow is restricted by the almost-closed throttle plate, not the air filter. It would be at WOT where any re-learning would be needed. Is it written in the shop manual?

However If you live in Britain I know there are local distributors who offer it cheaper like TEC, and may be that other countries also have local distributors. I would suggest to just google 'DNA 350 air filter stage 2 kit ' or 'DNA air filter and high flow plate' and seeing what options are available. The kit is not very competitively priced, particularly the plate for what it is, so hopefully some competitors start producing similar kits.

I would expect there would be very little effect on performance, I more noticed just extra responsiveness and a little more low/mid (though that may just be from the responsiveness making it feel better). I don't think this upgrade is a big performance gain, unless you are doing an exhaust system and remap. In my area heavy rain while riding isn't a concern so I can get away with not having the water shielding.
