Project Kermit 17: A Series Land Rover Full Restoration

Автокөліктер мен көлік құралдары

The chassis is so shiny! Newly dipped in zinc, it's now restored well beyond it's original spec. I expect the chassis to last forever, or at least longer than I will. The rest of the project is now merely a case of bolting everything else back onto it...
Project Kermit is a 1978 Land Rover Series 3 109 (long wheel base) which is being stripped right down and rebuilt with a 200tdi engine and a few other improvements. The other videos in the series can be found in this playlist: • Project Kermit: A Seri...

    Looks great Max, you must be well chuffed. For some reason it's a little unsettling seeing you out and about in the 'real' world on a motorway, surrounded by the general public and modern vehicles. Maybe because in my mind's eye you exist only in this little off-grid plot away from all that stuff!

    I worked in a galvanising place many years ago, none of them like doing "old" stuff because if it's not been cleaned and prepared properly it contaminates the tanks. Looks good but I'd still whack cavity wax inside it just in case of missed bits.

Still pump in wax oyl each year, but its solid - and I inherited it (RIP Seth), sadly, in 2018, still stinking of cigars and ahheeem, whisky. Sandelin curve relates the silicon content to zinc thickness, get it in structural sections too

  • @mm5aho
    @mm5aho2 жыл бұрын

    Its true that weld wire is a different chemistry, so the zinc coating is thicker over the welds. The steel doesn't change dimensions, doesn't come proud of the base metal, just the zinc thickness is much thicker over the weld. Its avoidable by using weld wire the same grade of steel (same chemistry) as the steel being welded.

Thank for the video =)

  • @maximusironthumper

    @maximusironthumper

    Both have their place, for enclosed sections it has to be hot dipped and it leaves a nice thick layer of zinc, on the other hand, some things you wouldn't want to dip (axle casings, cast iron) so the zinga wins out for those.

    I drove my 61 lwb landrover with my trailer behind over the Severn bridge from Chepstow on the M4 back in March. Stayed on the motorway for about 30 miles, it was quite windy and the concentration levels were quite high! I had a 1946 knucklehead Harley in the trailer, and it was a relief to turn off and revert to old A roads. The galv dip must put a few stone on the overall weight?
