Project Kermit 19: A Series Land Rover Full Restoration
Автокөліктер мен көлік құралдары
Time to make a start on sorting out the axles, featuring a special guest star! We start with the rear axle and give it new bearings, new shoes, cylinders and brake springs. The axle was blasted to bare metal, given a coating of Zinga cold glav, followed by a Zinga MIO topcoat.
Project Kermit is a 1978 Land Rover Series 3 109 (long wheel base) which is being stripped right down and rebuilt with a 200tdi engine and a few other improvements. The other videos in the series can be found in this playlist: • Project Kermit: A Seri...

It's nearly 30 years since my Grandad passed away, I'd love to show him all the skills I've gained in that time thanks to his teaching as a child. Enjoy every minute Max :)
i think i was part of something special there, all i did was watch, no i didnt. i was truly part of something, very special. thankyou Max.
Good grief, your Grandad is a treasure. You are so blessed to have him around. Such a willing and knowledgeable pair of hands. On the gardening videos it was obvious the mind was willing but the body was struggling, but here you could see the years of experience. Lots of love to you both.
I smiled all the way through this, so awesome hanging out with your grandad. Unfortunately both my grandfathers are gone and my dad died two years ago, so I really miss doing this sort of thing. Thanks for letting us watch you work together, it's wonderful...
Your granddad is classic, so natural,, easy, a real person, more please.
Your videos dissolve the “fourth wall” that separates the viewer from what’s happening. Felt like I was sitting on a stool in the shop. A rare and subtle trick.
We definitely need a video series with you, your grandad and Mark fixing something. Please 😊
What a beautiful day working with your grandfather. What a delightful gentleman
Heartwarming watching you and your Grandad working together, please give him our regards.
I got to say I enjoy your restoration video's on the Landy, but this has got to be the best video with having Grandad around. I wasn't very far in before I figured out he wasn't an accountant in his work life, he's right in there with not putting that hub on first and helping clean parts and hold wrenches. Then he comes out with working in a car factory and a couple stories about motorbikes to prove it . When you stopped for coffee you got me thinking about my late Grandad on Moms side, he folded the tops of his wellies over just the same. Cherish the time together all my grandparents are long gone, but memories are still there. He's a natural on camera, and I'd love to see him again working with you and hear more stories. Take care Max and Grandad.
I love the fact that you get to spend time with your Grandad. My Grandad died when I was a young man but have very fond memories of my time spent with him; a watch repairer. I don’t think it is a coincidence that I really appreciate the engineering in watchmaking.
Your grandad is the true star of the show, well done.
Grandad rocks !

Haven't even watched this one yet but, yes Grandad rocks like his grandson!
I am hereby inaugurating the "Best Granddad on KZread" award, and presenting it, in perpetuity, to your Granddad. What a gem! I know this isn't a democracy and no one cares what I think, but... I think we need a four-hour episode that's just you and your Granddad drinking a couple pots of tea and reminiscing about his life. He's seen so much change in his time; what a treat it would be to hear him reflect on it all.
It's great to see these priceless moments with grandparents. I can remember some with my grandfather and the sounds of the chickens in the background. That was way back in the late 1950's. This takes me back even though I was a really small child about 6 or 7 years old. I can almost smell the grease here.
My Dad’s first powered vehicle was a NSU Quickly, and around the same time he rented a “sit up and beg” Ford Pop for days out with the family. Happy days. Thanks for reminding me, and please keep including Grandad in your projects.
Great vid, that final comment on the distances on the backing plates caught me out once, never again. Great to see grandad in action, took me back to my younger days with my grandad. You are privileged to have him in your workshop at such a grand old age. Regards to the both of you. Enjoying the Landie rebuild !!
What a treat to see you're working on the Land Rover again. Your grandad reminds me of my sadly passed away grandad. Wearing his flat cap, he always had something to work on in or around the house. So great to see you two working together. Brings back beautiful memories. Wish you all the best! And keep making these great videos
I love seeing your grandad there helping. Your so lucky to have him. Both of mine passed away before I was born.
Nice to see that you take the extra time to include your grandad. Really warms my heart
Your grandad is like a precious jem he should be cherished..my god when I think of the way we have let our society degrade into the state we have today..it makes it even more important to respect and take care of the older generation...
The videos just get better. Don't you just hate it when when your grandfather is right. I have replaced shoes in the past, but I never thought of removing the hub first. There were several points where I laughed at the little comments - 'I would finish it if I were you'!
“Not these modern cars” !!!!!!! Love it!
Love it, Grampa's idea of a modern car, is from 1986. Much better than parking him in front of a TV. You guys are so cute.

Hi Grandad
Make your Grandad a nice cup of tea he is a lovely man, God bless.
I just love Grandad. What a legend.
Great to see Grandad back! It's really lovely watching you interact together. And, as always, great content - thank you!
Great watch and your grandad is amazing he is a natural. So nice you get to spend time together thanks for sharing your project and grandad with us all.
Your apprentice is learning Max, brewing up in good time! Great to see his experience being utilised.
Love your granddad he rocks, my father worked up pressteel in Oxford for thirty years plus, not for me but each too there own, keep up the good work, markUK
loving watching you work with Grandad, what a great old guy....
Grandad's mention of the Cowley Works.................what memories
Absolutely love watching you and Grandad. What an amazingly knowledgeable and interesting chap (Grandad I mean 😊). I simply adore listening to the stories and escapades. Simpler times in so many ways. Please pass my regards to Grandad.
Your very lucky to have Grandad, make the most of your time together, I still miss my Grandad 30+ years after his passing, seeing you two together takes me back to some lovely times.

You got that right, grandad and dad. Great memories.
Grandad is something else! My grandad also had a motorcycle and sidecar around the same time. 5 kids in the sidecar. It was a converted ice cream ‘van’.
Just wonderful to see you working with grandad
Grandad was adamant about the shoes ! Think the old fella needs his directors chair overseeing progress. Keep at it Max. All the best Mat
Fantastic video - maybe if grandad ever feels like it he could tell us about the cars he used to build? Thank you max for making these videos - in a crazy world you offer a reminder that all is not lost.
absolutely priceless, time spent with 'grandad'. Wonderfull input from him, best wishes to him and hope we get a bit more 'help' from him in the future.
Glad grandad has a new stick. Looks the height of modern technology!
My grandad worked at Pressed Steel too in Swindon. He built my Dad's first motorbike in his shed from bits out of a box. Sadly I never got to share my love of mechanics with him as he passed when I was about 20 and was ill for several years before that. You're very lucky.
Wonderful. Bless grandpa’s heart. And yours.
A joy to watch you two interact, does anyone else talk to the screen as you assemble the parts ?? stub axle locking tab keyway goes to the top, back plates are sided because of the snail cams, use a smear of RTV to stick gaskets down, will never leak ( Land Rover with no leaks, novelty ) and as Mike in Canada would say, Making your Land Rover better.
God Max, you are nearly bringing tears to my eyes. Memories of my grandad are rushing in now. Grandparents couldn't afford a car either after the war so they both had Solex mopeds and a trailer with my mum and aunt in it going everywhere with them. I still remember riding on the back of the moped in an improvised child seat with leather belts as straps and no helmet, I used to love it!!!!
Your grandad is an amazing man. Great video to watch.👍🏻👌🏻
Great job again Max , You can’t beat spending time with your Grandad , Top job boys
Love your grandfather; hearing his stories brings the history of ordinary people and times gone by to life. You are so Blessed to have him; give him a gentle hug. Be well
Such a character and your grandad's not too bad either
“This is Grandad” Grandad: Max has clearly lost it, he’s introducing me to his workshop now.
See grandad knows best we’ll done pops he knows his stuff👍
Should go Viral…
I love grandad. He reminds me of mine, sadly gone now. He founded TVR with his friend Trevor in Blackpool. Hell of a mechanic and engineer, I wish I wasnt so young when he was around. Now I'm a heavy duty bus mechanic living in the US and I would love to pick his brains and write his story down I guess I'm carrying on the family tradition
I was shouting at the screen trying to tell you how to get those brake shoes on without removing the hub! Grandad is right that it’s easier without the hub, but it is perfectly possible to do with it fitted. The trick is to fit one shoe with the bottom spring hanging free, then you can hook the second shoe onto the hanging spring and pry it around the bottom pivot. Getting the top spring on is a pig, but I usually manage it with the aid of a bit of garden tie wire to pull on.
It’s brilliant seeing your grandad in the videos max it puts a whole new take on them, I am currently restoring a 1964 military landrover and a very expensive new chassis😩
Grandad is awesome love him ❤️
You know someone's been around for a long time when they call a series Land Rover a modern car lol!
Nice to have a helper who's keen and has some common sense, I hope you kept him in tea.
What a top man your Grandad is. Great to see you working together. Keep it up
Grandad we love you!! Grandad we do!! ✌️🛵👴🛀
Grandad knows best Max 🤣 He's a treasure for sure, thanks for sharing him with us again
A nice job done by you and Grandad... See you both on the next one...
Right time to get on with it. Enjoy your weekend.🙂
Brilliant. When you finished the 88 and passed MOT i nearly had tears. Watching you work on a Rover with your Gramps is heartfelt. Happy New Year from Oregon USA
He’s our Grandad now!!!!!!!
That's looking really good; makes me miss my old Landy - and my Grandad!!
When your grandfather talked after you fitted the shoes, I hear the bloke from dad's army saying they don't like it up them. I can't unhear it when he speaks.
How special to have your Grandad there.
I have said it on previous videos, but your Grandad is an absolute diamond! You are so lucky to have him around.....
Great to watch. Grandad steals the show. Good content to.
Up staged by Granda again. Senior power!
Grandads becoming the star of the show👍👍 great work you two. Great how grandad was telling some stories.
Grandad is fantastic!!
Lovely video, your Grandfather is Awesome
Absolutely, Grandad was right in the first place!! Haha, lovely to watch :) Can be done with the hub on, but requires some effort, some swearing, and the occasional bloodied finger.
Grandad is a lovely fella. You can tell he's been around the block or two playing around with cars. Wonderful you have the chance to work together on your project.
within 2 minutes your grandad had me chuckling.
Well, if you are going to hire a master mechanic for the price of a cup of tea and an apple cake, at least listen to his advice! 😂 Great instalment to the series. 👍🏻
This was one of the first jobs i did in my old land rover, rebuilding axles and brakes. Great introduction of working on an old landy 😉
Grandad knows best 😅😁
Grandad. What a guy
what a rare treat to have your old grandad in the video! what a joy this video will be to you in decades to come.
Brilliant to see your Granda working on the Landy with you Max, he's a great bloke!
Back in the day I used to run steel coils into pressed steel, I think they also made Rolls Royce body's as well, don't forget listen to Grandad your lucky to have him help out.
I wish I had been lucky enough to share the experiences with my Grandad.....special times Max.
YOUR A VERY LUCKY MAN TO BE ABLE TO WORK WITH YOUR GRANDDAD , MY GRANDDAD DIED WHEN I WAS 2 YEARS OLD..
Great to see Grandad in the workshop with you. I lost mine 22 years ago, he was a jack of all trades and taught me to wood turn when I was a teenager. Watching the both of you brought all those great memories back. Thanks Max! 🇦🇺
Love granpa! For the breather put a barb fitting and 16 inches 3/8 rubber hose hooked up under the body and that breather at the end of the hose
Grandad didn't want to say I told you so but said it anyway :) adorable x
Grandad is just brilliant - what a charictor. 😃
Brilliant watching you and your Grandad working on the Landy, he's got a great sense of humour as well with his stories...thanks for sharing and look forward to more of the same. Well done!
Love the explanation to grandad! I wish mine were still around.
Great video Max, as always. Funnily, I was thinking, as you were building the axle up, easier to put the shoes on before the hubs…., then grandad said it…., old school wisdom right there. Great that you are preserving these memories with him, not only is it great for your viewers to watch but, it will be priceless to you in the future. Thanks, as always, for making real, genuine content.
Working well together, great to see!
Years ago I bought a Series 2A and on investigating a weep from both rear backplates found the whole axle full of oily water. I think the previous owner's deep wading must have drawn water into the axle breather. I fitted an extension breather using push-in pneumatic fittings and pvc air pipe, as a cheap and easy solution. Great video, I do enjoy watching you working together.
Grandad's ace 👍
Grandad needs to be a permanent fixture. I hope I'm as sharp and witty when I get to his age 🙂
For the axle breather, it’s also important to check that the ball inside is free to move around. Unscrew it from the axle and give it a shake and you’ll be able to hear if the ball is free. If it’s not then some brake cleaner and compressed air will usually sort it out in short order. You are doing a great job on that axle. Well, actually you’re doing a great job on the whole Land-Rover!
A joy to watch, your Grandad is wonderful.
Your grandad is the best! When's he getting his own channel?
