I must say, yes… I was so happy to see you struggle. I saw your video on a wheel bearing and control arms, and I told my wife I would only be gone an hour or two… 4 hours later, 3 trips to the store, exploding HF pry bar, cut just below my safety glasses, working past midnight to get a pinch bolt out, and drilled for a through bolt…. I finished the passenger side only.
Enjoy every minute of rust from CT! At least the sun came back out. Hub shocker does win EVERY time! One of the best tools ever.
Looks just like working on a Subaru! Also won't lie, did get some satisfaction out of seeing you have to beat the crap out of the bearing to get it out. Pretty much standard procedure up here, but that one wasn't even too bad. Great vid as always!

I was hoping you could do a multi parts series on how to maintain your subaru to make it last forever. So oil changes, headlight replacement, headlight protector, waxing and detailing, coolant changes, etc. THANKS!
Put a jack stand under the knuckle, it'll keep the suspension from absorbing the some of the impact of the hammer.

Yeah, I always forgot to brace the suspension in the rare occasion I need the hub shocker.
I spent hours and hours trying to remove the front wheel hub assembly from my 17 Forester XT, finally said screw it and traded it in, as they wanted 2k to do it. Thanks NY salt 😂

Yes as a rust belt suby owner I have to admit the stuck bearing brought a smile to my face. I will say I did 2 bearings on my wife's 06 outback and didn't have to struggle as much as you did. I gave it one wack and they came loose from the backing plate.

Love watching you diagnose and repair Subaru's. I have a 2005 Outback and wife has a 2007 Outback. Love the cars. Wish I had your knowledge! New subscriber here. ❤
perfect timing! I was looking on doing forged wheel studs on my 2018. Good video!
🙂 From the mid-Atlantic. Yes, the spalled rolling elements (balls or rollers?)/raceway(s) is audible. Thanks - another great video.
Thanks for the video Robert great job 👍❤️❤️ it. Take care of yourself.
Hi Robert, You did great job, Love your channel!
Mr. Subaru that is what I am more familiar. As I said in the other bearing video I don’t even pound anymore I just take off all of the suspension bolts and press off with my 20 ton shop press. I also always install a new backplate . That rust bond is tenacious. Subaru bearings normally laugh at the hub buster . Thanks for posting the BRZ bearing video !!!
14:25 "all we goota do now is put our wheel and nuts on and torque them to specification" ... and wait till the right side starts noising !!!
Simplicity Great job, thanks
I love my 2019 Crosstrek and with 36k miles, had zero problems...I do change the oil every 3,500 miles at the dealership as I have a heavy foot and drive fairly aggressively.....assume I'll need brakes and rotors soon......always at the dealership...I don.t care that I can get it done cheaper somewhere else.....I am paying for expertise and deep pocket responsibility for any errors! Thanks for another great vlog!
Thanks for the awesome content Mr Subaru!!!
LOLOLOL!!! It did my old heart a bunch of good seeing someone else struggle with one of these. I have a hub shocker and many, MANY strokes of an 8# sledge did absolutely no good - ended up pulling the spindle and whacking it over a couple of concrete blocks to get it loose. Acid Magic removed multiple layers of rust from the inside of the spindle to allow reassembly (with anti-seize of course).
Just did this to my 18 wrx. Slide pull hammer all day.
Wow that's easier than i thought.
check you out... i subscribed just to watch you work on the same exact car i have, and the first thing you do is the same exact fix i did recently. =] i had even more trouble than you did getting it out, so i slathered the whole thing in anti-seize when i put it back together. hopefully that helps the next guy.
I'll be honest in my many years of watching you, I've never seen you struggle like that, lol.

I am from the salty north and I did laugh 😅 If you wanna take my advice for the next one, put some support between the ground and the knuckle before smacking the hub. The impact will be transmitted much more efficiently as you won't be just springing the whole suspension assembly up and down. Sorry for being the guy who knows better... Yes I am from Canada.

Yeah. Halfway though it I was like wait…. I always forget to Jack under the spindle…
I love that he took his tire off with a star pattern, used a caliper hanger, and used a hub assembly. If you have ever tried pressing wheel bearings on a subie, it's a pita and easy to mess up your first time. But the entire hub assembly and save yourself time and grief.

These only come as a bolt in hub assembly post 2005. Prior they were only a press in assembly.

Can you make a video about maintenance of FA20D engine in terms of longevity? (oil, carbon, coolant, mods,...)
Mr. Subaru, thank you for another great vid! Would it make sense to do both sides at the same time, or can you wait until the other goes bad before replacing?

Thank you! my 2015 Forester has been relatively reliable, however I have replaced both front control arms with new bushings and ball joints as they had failed at 75,000 miles!
A mate hit a pothole of the side of the road in his Subaru XV and bent 2 rims and it appears it also dented the bearing race on the rear hub as he has bearing noise ever since.
I figured the bolts that hold it in would be one time use too.
@ MrSubaru1387 nice car. I just picked up a 13 BRZ with 30k on it. Quick question, have you dealt with a BIU in these cars with a shorted drivers door courtesy lamp circuit? My bulb has been replaced, but does not light, and with the bulb removed the circuit shows 10.3v, but with the bulb in it shows .15 volts, and the bulb does not light up. Any advice? I understand these modules need programmed after replacement.
“shouldn’t be too stuck in there “ proceeds to be jammed in there
Hey Mr Subaru, you considered getting a set of Quick Jacks?
Is there a reason u torque lugs while in the air? ive always been taught to do hand tight in the air and torque on the floor
So dry when it finally broke free! Some people put franks on everything, but I like to put a healthy dose of acetone & ATF on those problem spots
I won’t laugh man I struggle too sometimes 😂
I've got a question, sort of related to this, mostly not. I've got a 2022 GR86, but we all know it's a Subie with Toyota DNA mixed in. There has been a "tinking" noise coming from what I assume to be the axle nut on the rear driver side axle. This is what all the forum stuff I've looked up suggests. I replaced the axle nut, torqued to spec, and the frequency of the tinking has reduced some, but has not completely gone away. My question is about the torque spec on the axle nut. Is it okay to torque these things down harder to help make the noise to go away? I know with some wheel hub/bearing designs it doesn't matter how hard you crank down on them, but on some it does. Preload on the bearing, too much torque messes up the bearing and stuff. Let me know what you think. Love the channel!
Hey just a question what would be the best rebuild kit for a ej20 motor? Because I’m not trying to spend thousands to rebuild it
Hello Robert, it's recommended to change both hub bearings in that axle or only the faulty one?

I just did this on my 2018 trek. Getting those 4 14mm bolts to line up again was a nightmare for me. The hub popped out by breathing on it, super easy. Get the new hub bolted in was a nightmare. I have no idea why!

Sticking a long tapered punch through one of the bolt holes will line up the rest of the bolt holes. Ask me how I know... 😂

Was going to recommend the same as Jim. Stick a big punch or a slightly smaller bolt through the front to line everything up.
@chrisboyd4433

My removal method involved four longer versions of the hub bolts. To install the new hub, I thread those longer bolts into the new hub first. they act as a guide to line up the backing plate and the new hub as they are pressed into the knuckle. Then I replace the long bolts with the actual bolts one by one.
I came across your channel looking into the 2023 crosstrek. I'm considering a crosstrek premium, 6 speed manual. What are the most common problems with these, as im sure they have used the same engine/trans combo for a few years now. Any service bulletins? Thanks.

I’m from New Zealand. What’s anti-seize? 😏
Milwaukee 3/8 mid impact? Snap-on swivel 3/8 sockets?
Can you put the torque values?
I suppose it's pretty much same on old 2002 forester s model with the rear disks.
I'm an hour and a half into smacking my rear BRZ wheel bearing with the hub shocker. Hub shocker is not winning in the end
The reason the bearing felt hard to turn is because it was connected to the drivetrain, bearings don’t get harder to turn😂 they loosen up when they wear
Mr. Subaru, sorry but this is unrelated to this video. Do you ever do a paid phone consultation? I don't have a real Subaru mechanic within 3 hours from me and you seem to have the knowledge I need and would trust. It's just advice on the 2011 Forester Touring and not diagnosis of any problem as all is currently sound with a fresh oil change, filter, air filter and new battery. I just have three basic questions as I obviously want to keep this car running correctly.
Do you know what Subaru models this applies to? It looks similar to my '16 Crosstrek.
