Subaru Rear Wheel Bearing - Part I
Автокөліктер мен көлік құралдары
In this video I show you the process of replacing a rear wheel bearing on the rear of a rotted Subaru Forester. The through bolt on the rear suspension can be a bit tricky. Nothing a sawzall can't handle. -Enjoy

Eric, I just watched your WUW from November. Don't ever get down about the types of videos you upload. You are a great source of knowledge and entertaining, too - we appreciate any job you share with us!
"When you pull these out be very quiet, because you're gonna have to hear where it hits the floor." Thus speaks the voice of experience!
As a 15 year Subaru technician in NYS as well, I've done several of these bearings. One thing I will add is to check the sealing area of the axle. It is common for it to pit bad enough to allow water and debris to damage the new bearing very quickly. We always include the axle in the estimate.
If you put "featuring Vinnie" in all the vids I will actually never miss a single one. That man should be preserved for all eternity.

As a retired mechanic that did a lot of this work too (on my back mostly) I totally appreciate the work you put into this. I have a friend who needs it done and he asked me to do it but I declined because of recent back surgery. I'm glad I did too. I have to tell you, I appreciate the video and have all kinds of respect for you guys these days. It isn't easy working on car anymore. However, you did it methodically, safely, properly and I salute you. The world needs more good guys out there doing this work. Sadly, our craft is losing too many people. I'm delighted I stopped and watched this video and many kudos to you for your obvious professional work. You give mechanics everywhere a good name.
The chef is killing it in the new kitchen, you go Mrs. O. Mr. O never gives up those wheel bearings are going to come out one way are the other.

Ya...Funny how some folks can't understand how you make money in the repair business....I always paid cash when the job was done...call me up and I'm down to the shop to pay and take it away... The door is damn near blocked with finished jobs that they can't or won't pay for....and Mike is covered up in work for guys that already owe him money....but he'll try to get me in...But he has to work on their stuff first....Or they won't pay him?...I asked his guy about diagnosing my problem?....Wise ass tells me ...."It's a Damn Ford"! I never brought him a paying job again!...Luckily there are mechanics who want to get paid!
Eric O, your wife is a hottie, you're well privileged my friend. Not to mention, that which you already know, from working in the rust belt, you're an overqualified used vehicle mechanic. Your videos have been beyond helpful to me and I wish you all the best my friend! I wish you many more years of mechanical supremacy, and I am glad to see a humble genius at work!
When I do these at work, I totally skip the through bolt and drop the differential down far enough to pop the axle out of it. Then go to town doing the bearing. Of course this only works with the hub tamer or something similar. Takes about 20 mins to drop the differential and no need to break bolts or have to mess with bushings. Either way you do this job, be prepared for a lot cussing.
Your Video inspired me and I was able to remove the bolts, It was a battle but I prevailed!!! Thanks for what you do!! You too Mrs. O!
I'm down in SC, and every time I get to work on something from up your way, I say a lot of 4 letter words.
Ive been watchin you since about 2010 and i love to see how you deal with rust.I live in the south so rust doesnt exist until we get cars from the north and i can honestly say we have absolutely no idea what to do really. Your methods for dealing with rusty parts are amazing.

Haven't even watched but you know its gonna be good when there's a part 2 coming
This is a great example of showing the public what a crappy job us mechanics have day in day out , they simply don't get how difficult a simple job can end up being , with your informative video it shows what a job that should take 2 hours can take all day , but should we only charge 2 hours, the simple answer is NO, I like you quote for a job , if it goes straight forward, but it not , a telephone call will confirm this and extra costs incurred, great video Eric , lunch looks great, enjoy , you deserve it, have 30 mins break with Vanessa , family time
Got a minute for me??? Its usually all I need. Gotta love the honesty on this channel!! :)
Finally! A real world video on this job. I watch videos where the long bolt through the knuckle and controls arms zips right out. Where I live, that ain't NEVER, EVER, gonna happen. Thanks for the tip on the high end Sawzall blades!
You are a testament to your profession and humanity in general.
Eric, really enjoy your channel. You are a true mechanic...as demonstrated by your impressive techniques for working on rusty "stuff"! Great job!
Mrs O, what a sweetheart helper. Great video!!

Finally, a good old rust battle again! This video has almost everything: under carriage work, rust, big nasty, flying bearings, Vinny, Mrs O, sweet baby ray's BBQ sauce! If part 2 contains: the flame wrench, brake clean and fluid film this repair ends up on my top 5 SMA list. My number 1 is "Honda Civic Rear Struts : When The S.H.T.F." Greetings from Norway!
Great video of a real-world rust-bucket job! I will however join the chorus about needing to eye and ear protection when using Big Nasty and the rattle wrench. We need you! Without your expert videos, us shade-tree mechanic wouldn't know which way to turn a bolt.
I saw the title Subaru rear wheel bearing and I grabbed some snacks because we all know Subaru, rust, and wheel bearings make for a great video.
Classic style SMA! Eric beatin' on something and a special guest appearance by Vinny.
The excellent video quality and step by step instructions are very much appreciated.
Dang, Mr. O's in an usually chipper mood starting this job. One comic comment after another! Love the homemade bolt and emery cloth flapper sander wheel. Sounds like an old-school RC airplane gas engine. 24:22 For your backside spacer for pushing in the bushing, maybe you should weld a piece of pipe on it that is larger then the od of the rod to help hold it in place while attaching the ball joint press. You could also weld a small bolt on the front side piece to loosely go inside the bushing.
I think Mrs.O has a better shop kitchen than I do in my house!
I love work. I could watch it all day long!
Wow. Seeing these videos always makes me happy to live where rust doesn't happen like that.....
Good job,Eric. You do the dirty work other shops can't or won't do!👍

These videos about subi wheel bearings makes me want to preemptively grease the bolts on my outback........ never mind, you just got done saying the late models have a new design. Love all the videos! Best repair/ diagnostic channel hands down.
Mrs ‘O’ IS IN THE KITCHENNNNNN!! Not watched for a while good to see Mrs ‘O’ in the new kitchen in the office. Some comedic timing as ever, Eric... unless I just have a sick sense of humour and you were speaking sincerely etc. Can’t remember the amount of times I have used the knowledge gleaned from your good self to fix my little fleet of cars and van. We ‘Roll Coal’ in my family ATM. Many of the techniques used on the rust belt junk seen in these videos pertains to the rust filled junk that I can usually afford to buy(but not pay to be fixed by a Pro) so you have saved me a lot of money and I enjoy fixing stuff too so it’s a double win. My garage usually has similar noises and comments such as ‘There’s your problem, Lady’ etc and ‘Not a sponsor’ I am only missing the video camera and ‘Jeep’ hat and I think I could make ‘Parody’ videos (although my beard looks more like ‘Santa Claus’ than yours, Eric) ‘Anyhoo’....If I am ever in Avoca I promise not to pass by ‘The Shop’ unless I have a genuine mechanical issue...or doughnuts....or brake cleaner to give you...
I remember you working on one of them buggers. Soak and spray and rattle , a few cuts with the hacksaw, and a few big Ugg’s duggas and boom! She off. A piece of cake for Eric.
Mrs O rocking the cast iron pan, best part of the video!@

Yay! New video Wow the rust on that is crazy 😜
Good man! Glad to see you're engaging safety squint 17:11. Can't be too careful.
Slide hammer action was cool. Good stuff!
Had to replace the same bearing on my 2017 Forester. Spent hours banging away with a 10lb slide hammer and a hub puller, never even got the bearing to budge. Ended up having to replace the whole knuckle because it had sized so bad. Shop couldn't even get it out. Surprised that one came off so easily, it looked so rusty crusty. Thankfully everything else on mine was in good shape and came free without much fuss.
Same rustiness here in Michigan, but I've got to live vicariously through you. I miss beating up the rust sometimes, your cars and just a little smaller than my semis though, that's all good though. By the way, cancer sucks!

Great job again like always
Man O Man, once the wheel was exposed and then the brake drum, holly cow, the rust. No wonder another shop gave up. Little did they know it wasn't really all that bad once getting into the job. Eric did the job like it was nothing, due to his many experiences of rusty crusty vehicles in his area. Amazing how many folks have exhaust fans over their cooking stoves and don't use them. After a couple of years all of the grease molecules and smoke will show up on cabinets, ceilings and walls. Best practice is to turn them on a few minutes before cooking and leave them on during the event. Saw a new home tract being built and toured one of them, the kitchen hood was like this one, a microwave/hood vent combo, yet it didn't vent outside ! It was a recirculate hood with charcoal packs. Truly, a complete waste especially on new construction when it's no big deal to route a 6" duct to the exterior roof or wall. Sadly the codes need updated to require them to vent outdoors, period. No hood vent is worth a darn unless it exhausts the stench and grime outdoors.
I like the way you don't make Vinny feel like he's in the way or a bother. Being able to drop in on you makes him feel alive I'll bet.
I love how people ignore these sounds and keep driving it until they look like that. That bearing is 6 months over due and then it costs the customers more and they don’t get that. Great job once again :)
The return of Big Nasty 👍

Gotta say. The chrome on those lug nuts looks pretty damn good. Had a customer today worried about his aftermarket locking hub bolts being rusted. He installed them himself and all 6 were loose. He did have a man bun and NPR on the radio. I live in Colorado, so rust is not an issue. Skinny jeans, man buns, smoking the weed, and stupidity are the name of the game. A nice Huth or John Bean exhaust pipe bender may be something to consider man. I rarely bend pipe anymore, but it is a bushing pressing monster.
Love this a great video of the rust problem

That's what I call a real woman, can switch from helping to drive a Subaru bushing home to preparing a tasty looking lunch. Hang on to that one Eric !
I recently used a dremel carbide multitool blade to cut off some seized ball joint bolts in a tight space. It’s slower than reciprocating saw but less chance of cutting through the parts you don’t want to damage.
