Project 16v - Part 29 - Rear axle rebuild

Автокөліктер мен көлік құралдары

PART 29 OF PROJECT 16v #allthevalves #thelemon
Lets ignore the engine problems and focus on shiny parts, time to finish the axle/beam rebuild and fit it to the Lemon.
21mm TBs. 24mm ARB. GAZ adjustable shocks. Stock mounts. New bearings and fixings. Lots of grease.
Many thanks to Stef of of Axles By Stef. Supplied the parts I needed at a great price and gave me help everytime I asked without any complaints!
Lesson to take away from this one... Get Stef to do it next time!

    Top man ! You know iv never actually worked on a torsion bar rear axle before other than to change 1 out on a 309 years ago , most garages round my way would never touch them interesting now as an older ( 38 ) man to revisit this through the wonders of u tube and see what all the fuss is about Well done on a lovely rebuild a very nice car now actually a 306 Dturbo “ new enough to be good” - “ old enough not to have all the shite on it “ well done friend 👍🏻

    Halfway through trying to rebuild my beam and I've snapped a bolt in the end of one of the torsion bars. Should've just hammered the arms out instead of trying a puller. Good video hopefully I can free my seized bars.

    Good job 1 thing tho i wouldn't use copper grease on bearings as its a anti seize not a lubricant its actually slightly abrasive

    100% agree.... Hence I don't THINK I would have put copper grease on bearings... I would use the lithium stuff, because as you say, it's anti seize only. 👌🐷💪

    Cheers for making this! Much more use than Mr Haynes :) Is it possible to replace the two pairs of bearings inside the beam & re-use the beam? Or is it 9/10 that the beam is gouged from worn bearings & needs to be replaced..?

  • @PiggyPower

    @PiggyPower

    Yes it is. I've had a specialist do this for me, Stef, at other times. Many tubes now have gone oval and need further repair. You need a special tool or two to remove and refit the bearings.

    josh_4000 ™ on the 206 you will find the shafts worn badly if bearings have gone. The shafts can only be replaced professionally... Requires special tooling/cuting the axle in half! It's not worth buying a worn out axle at all! 🐷💪

    Hey good job on the axle, I'm doing some work on my GTI6 one currently, can you explain more about what went wrong with the wheels being 10mm to close together, you mentioned about the ARB but I can't see how there is 10mm in it to cause that??

    Good job man !!! I got 1998 Citroen Xsara which I'm preparing it to drive 500k around the world. The thing is that when I put some weight on the back the car sinks too much... The axle isn't rusted and the is no ticking sounds from it, the car has only 220k km. I know that my shocks are bad, is that the reason for the car to sinks or something else? I guess my Xsara has 19mm torsion bars, upgrading it to 21mm will stiff the rear more for holding weights?

  • @PiggyPower

    @PiggyPower

    Yeah, I'd upgrade to 21mm bars and some new shocks. 👍 Old bars lose strength overtime too 👌 Have a fun trip!!! Are you documenting it? 👍🐷💪

    Hi Piggy, I've been following your channel for a good time now and it has helped me on my journey with my own 306 a lot. Your videos are really great and informing. I know this video is from 2018 but I see you answered to every single comment so I hope you'll see this. I've got a problem with the rear being saggy and soft, no knocking sounds and I am suspecting the shocks have had enough. They are ta technix and also the front is on ta technix -30mm springs. Do I get the bilstein b4s? I am scrolling through forums and finding the b4s are good except one version (model number 1931) and they also say not to get 205 ones. I am pretty confused as I don't know which b4s to get. Some people recommend ones for a citroen zx or a 306 break as they should be compatible. I really would appreciate your help a lot :)

    Good morning!! Thanks for watching my stuff and I always try to reply if I see the comments... Depends on KZread really... Presuming you have a 306. The rear "sag" will be regulated by the torsion bars (like springs). Are they stock? What size? If you bounce the rear and let go and it keeps bouncing, that's the dampers. B4s for a 306 be good yeah. Don't faff with others that might work, just get them for your 306. 👍🐷😁

    Good morning to you too, I wasn’t expecting such a quick reply :) I suspect the torsion bars are stock and just the shocks were exchanged for some ta technix ones. I hope the shocks are at fault here, but I’m not 100% sure and I am a bit scared if I order and replace the shocks and the problem persists. Can you help me out, I can send you a video demonstration of it if you want. Thanks for the help, you’re a G.
