Progress with my PLUS QUILT, Project Linus Catch Up and a Chat

I am recovering from a head cold and you can hear it in this video! I enjoyed an early morning chat with you all and then got ready for the Project Linus, rep, Liz. She was calling by to collect the quilts I have made in memory of my Mum. I made a playlist about those quilts here
• Project Linus Quilts
Of course it is good to have some fresh baked shortbreads to offer to guests. I made enough virtual ones to pass down the Lime Green Sofa! Help yourself.
I used Mary Berry's recipe, of course, and you can find that here
thehappyfoodie.co.uk/recipes/...
I have been wanting to revisit the Plus Quilt I started such a long time ago now that my grandson is starting to crawl! Before I know it he'll be learning to drive! So I think I should crack on with this! Doesn't time fly! The first video about this quilt is here and all the details about how to make it are in that video

Over on Patreon I am sharing some seasonal content with my lovely Patrons. Last Friday I made my Christmas Planning Notebook and chattered away for over an hour and a half! A real marathon effort! The Diary for November will be coming soon and Anna and I are putting the finishing touches to the most epic Advent offering ever! The new feature 'Collections' makes it easy to find all the post I make.

As a resident of the US, when I stumbled across your channel I never gave a thought to the word Homely in reference to your channel. That is because I knew exactly what it meant the first time I watched a video. You are the epitome of safety, warmth, and coziness and your home simply is an expression of the wonderful person you are. Be blessed!

I’m an American who read The Lord of the Rings when I was a child and thought it was the most beautiful magical world I had ever stumbled into. I loved the name of your channel and accepted the meaning of homely as safe, warm and cozy just as I did when I read the books because Tolkien was obviously a person who knew what he was talking about. I knew you valued that world just as I did which drew me right into your channel. Cat Rita looks very well and beautiful. I miss the others, seeing them curled up on the window sill.

Pointe-Claire, a suburb of Montreal here😊. This morning the video of Kate’s visit to Owen & “girl” Rita popped up in my feed, which I enjoyed very much. Very impressed by her will-power in not buying out the entire stock at the Japanese paper store, as I am sorely tempted to do whenever I’m there😍. Getting ready for winter in this neck of the woods too, with no idea what to expect because of climate change🤔❄️💧😥! Nice to see that Kate’s lovely lime-green sofa has expanded so much and that her “homely” house now also has a growing presence in 🇨🇦- 🤗hugs to all!

Another lovely, calming video, Kate. I certainly wish I’d been following you during COVID. I only discovered you in the spring, but you are such a big part of my life. You keep me company most of the time I’m in my sewing studio. I love to see what you’re working on (and have been watching videos from the start of your channel). I also love making bright, cheerful quilts! I was making one for a cousin’s 20’s something daughter. I asked for her preferences - light/bright, patterns/solids, etc. She responded that she preferred light, calm colors. Well, as a you would understand, it was a bit of a challenge for me (in the very best of ways). In the end, she loved it. Stay well; I’m looking forward to seeing what’s next on your list… ❤

I've always had cats, since I was small enough to crawl under the stove. They've lived to long lives and had many kittens.. as many as 24 at one time, from Alphonse to Zenobia. 78 years later there are only 5 ancient ones of different lots. Only one of all of them preferred to be an "only" cat, so she lived with a neighbor happily for the rest of her life. Had a cardboard cat when I drove truck. She's patrolling the book shelves. Can't live happily without cats, so I always smile to see yours helping with thread things.

I stumbled across the Last Homely House while looking for quilt stuff. You see, my mother grew up in north England, met and married my dad during WWll, and emigrated to the US in 1945. And there you were. You were a sort of a peek into my mothers life that I never knew, but very much wish I had. Thank you for sharing your lovely little home and warmth. I wish I had known my mum better, understood her better. You remind me of my mom, had she been a warm and nurturing woman. But she was a terrified girl and shell shocked woman who left king and country. But she might have been you, if she could have. I love you dear heart.

As a US citizen I love the term " the last homely house." What the internet has forgotten is that "American English" is not a single interpretation of the English language. If you go from one small town to the next, or neighborhood to neighborhood in large cities you will find dialects, words, meanings, and useages that vary quite widely. Just as there are stereotypes all over the world, there are stereotypes here in the U.S. as well. There are so many more folk who lie somewhere outside and or adjecent to those stereotypes. I think, largely, we are the more quiet ones, the more thoughtful before we speak/write. Curiosity is key to being a lovely human who loves to uncover the deeper meanings of life and peoples. To me "homely house" means a gathering place of lovely creatures. In two day's time here in the U. S. we will be having Thanksgiving. This year I am recognizing the blessings I have in the people encouraging, inspiring, well wishing, and celebrating life alongside me. I am thankful for the internet in that it connects people, though they may be separated by oceans and continents, that are actually more like family. Love from Fayette County, Indiana, USA.

I agree with you about homely house. Please keep it with love. Someone somewhere changed the meaning of homely meaning of comfort of a home and grandmother's apple pie, warm quilts, biscuits and honey with buttér. To a meaning that is bad. When I heard someone saying homely about a person they would be a good person, but who was saying homely about them was to insult. Making them the bad one in my eyes. I would much rather have a homely heart than a heart who insults. Homely is a gorgeous word above some people's paygrade. I love your channel I feel at home and comfortable to visit with my time watching. Thank you.

I was raised by a grandmother whom some would consider "uneducated". She quit school in 6th grade in order go to work and help out her family. Her mother was a widow, a Cherokee Indian woman who had married an Irish immigrant who died. She had 2 younger siblings to help care for during the depression. She taught me to be mindful of other people's customs, and "turn of phrase". Something that doesn't seem to be taught by most parents in the U.S. now. Her home was very humble, we were quite poor (Much more poor than I realized while growing up). I miss that warm and safe feeling I had back then living with my grandmother. I get that warm feeling each time I see your lovely home. It has a calming and warm effect every time I see your videos.

I gave very little thought as to the word "Homely". I would have used homey but that's me. I also make quilts for Project Linus. It's very rewarding isn't it? Thank you for taking the time to make these videos and bring us into your home to sit by the fire and sew.

I enjoy watching your videos, Kate, and this one was awesome. Today, it was like the adult version of Mr. Rogers Neighborhood (for kids entertainment.) Following the warmth of your morning fire and coffee to baking shortbreads, sewing and sharing quilts, knitting and kitty rubs (while my doggy was cuddling with me and getting hugs, pets and belly rubs) to ending your day. I felt like I was on that lime green sofa enjoying it all together with you.

Kate, the story of words having different meanings in different English speaking lands, reminded me of when I came to the UK to meet my Scottish pen pal when I graduated High School. Lilian had advised me to bring plenty of "jumpers". Here in the US a jumper is a dress that one wears over a blouse. I only had one, but I dutifully packed it. Fortunately for me I also happened to pack a nice warm sweater, lol. :)

I live in Canada and over the years, I have noticed that the British people use homely instead of homey, but that’s okay, I knew what you meant. As long as we understand each other, it’s all good. Really enjoyed your video today. Love all the little quilts you made in your mom’s honour. She would be so proud of you. I love you cat, she is the same kind as my first kitten as a little wee girl. For the life of me, I cannot remember what happened to her. I wish I could get up as early as you and go to the bed so early as well, but I doubt it ever happens. I go to bed late and I sleep in. Your scones looks delicious. Thanks for a great video.

Sadly she went home to her Heavenly reward in October of 2023. Having read Tolkien’s books a number of times, I recognized the reference. I’ve lived in California all my life, but my mom brought home used children’s books that were obviously written in the the UK, so I understand both British and American meanings to the word “homely”. Thank you for your wonderful KZread channel, which I only discovered a few months ago.

Thank you for your post. Although as a Brit I understand the word ‘homely’. I believe your explanation of all of your “vocabulary” is terrifically important in your “cottage” in the NE of England where I spent 37 very happy years. My life has been filled by the joy of fabric and yarn which I am thrilled to be passing on to my grandchildren. (My eldest granddaughter has begun her yarn stash. Fabric stash already in creation). Your ‘homely house’ is absolutely my joy. A garden, fabric, yarn and peace of mind. A homely world.

I just recently came across your channel, and am loving the low key comfortable manner you have. When I first saw “Homely”, like you said, us Americans give it a negative connotation, but after watching your (rather MY) first video of yours, I just assumed it was a regional thing, because “HOMEY” is how I felt, so I haven’t given it another thought since then. I do so enjoy your little bits of your home life interspersed with everything else yo7 share. Thank you, from across the pond. ❤❤

Awww! I didn't know cat Rita was the last cat you had. Somehow, I missed that. Maybe she needs a friend? It's been so lovely to see various kitties snoozing in the background, and of course, I really miss Norma. I envy morning people. I'm definitely an owl who tries to be a lark. Now that I'm retired, I confess I don't try too hard, but I do wish I were a morning person.
