Program SAFE SELECT on ANY rc plane (Beginners)

Ғылым және технология

Worried about totaling a RC Plane? Thanks to technology the days of only flying a high wing trainer are over. Program SAFE SELECT on ANY rc plane or get a gyro like the Reflex V2 that works with ANY receiver! Best part? IT WORKS ON A SWITCH so you can shut it off at ANY time!!

SAFE availability is helping our hobby expand at an amazing rate. I'm in year 3 of the hobby at age 55. I tried to get in the hobby 20 years ago. That lasted less than 3 minutes (and 2 planes) due to the learning curve being too steep(and too expensive) for most beginners. Now in 3 years I have over 30 aircraft ranging from 800mm trainers to 1700mm warbirds and several edf planes. I keep SAFE programmed on almost all of them. And it allows spreading your comfort zone to windy days and learning to fly in crosswinds. Keep supporting its use and help all of your club members get comfortable with it. Thanks for the video.

Totally agree. I'm in year 2 and I'm 68 years old. I flew "full scale" planes for 50 years until my health became an issue. SAFE and Reflex stabilization has allowed me to progress rapidly and enjoy a wide variety of planes. I'm even flying some 3D foamies these days.

Got into the RC Plane hobby about 3 years ago at age 75. I would not be in the hobby today if it were not for SAFE/auto leveling technology. The technology has saved me from many crashes. I can flip the "B" switch faster than most pilots a fraction of my age. 😊

I love these ar630s. A bit pricy but the best recovery system I know of. Of course you need a spektrum transmitter (it may be possible to work with open or edge on a radiomaster if you are an electronics genius). The key is to designate a 3 way switch for F mode. In position 1 you inhibit safe and as3x. In position 2 you inhibit safe but activate as3x. In position 3 activate as3x and safe. I leave the factory settings for safe as they are. It will bring any plane to level in a panic situation or if you want to fly in safe allows enough banking to make turns etc but not so much that you can go out of control. The gyro (a3x) helps keep plane steady in wind. Safe levels the plane in a panic situation and also limits bank angles if you are just flying around. Also importantly, you can assign as3x adjustment capability, to a knob. If you turn the knob down all of the way you have minimum as3 x (no a3sx) and up all the way the maximum possible as3x (as set during set up if you don't stick with the default setting sensitivity amount). Thus you can make as3x adjustments on any particular day based on wind conditions using the knob. If you assign as3x to the knob you really only need to use a two way switch. In position one you activate as3x and inhibit safe. You then control the amount of as3x using the knob (knob all the way down if you don't want any as3x thus eliminating the need for a seperate switch position). In position 2 activate safe and as3x).

12 yrs in the hobby GYROS ARE GREAT. Safe especially, when your doing a 3d maiden flight and lose orientation, flick the switch regain control then turn back off. Or maybe you are experienced and just want a dumbed down relaxing flight. Either way it's better to have one on board than not! Great Video brother your a true inspiration!

Good video for explaining Safe mate. Not many out there that will explain this or go through the details of setting it up. I used Safe to get confident. I have Safe in all my planes from my 90mm F22, 80mm Futura and all my warbirds. I must add Safe flying numbs the feel of the sticks. Full push will not give the full movement. When out of safe that full movement will be alot more sensitive and thorough with the movements and result on the planes actions. So basically do not let muscle memory set in with Safe. Use it to get confident but get out of it as soon as you can. Safe is a fantastic panic button if u lose orientation or blinded by the sun. However Safe will not protect u from a stall. U still need throttle esp on the turns and if u do stall from slow speed, switching to Safe whilst the planes tumbling will not rescue it even if pushing the throttle as Safe is trying to level it and ul look like a leaf falling. U really need to be diving to gain speed to gain lift and fly out of the stall.

I think the best way to learn is by using a powered glider Mine was pretty big, like 1.5m, and it was pretty slow so controlling it was easy (i forgot the name of it) After 31 crashes, it's still flying well, and i customized it a little so now the full elevator can rotate Edit: another way of learning is using a rc flight sim. I recommend Picasim because it's free, can run on potato pc, and the flight physics are great. Edit 2: i remember the name of my first plane, it's an Eflite Conscendo 1.5m (not the evolution one) I'm french so sorry for my bad english

I started flying RC planes a couple of years ago. Initially I crashed a lot and destroyed a bunch of planes. I was about to give up then I bought the E-Flite Valiant with SAFE select. This changed everything. I've progressed to the point I rarely need SAFE, but if I do, I use it. It has allowed me to learn without destroying a lot of expensive planes. Makes common sense to me. Anti-gyro snobs need to be more open minded. Isn't this hobby supposed to be about having fun?

I learned way back in 1980 with the help of a good teacher at my flying field but I didn't fly any for about 30 plus years and recently started back with the help of as3x ! I can fly better now than I ever could back then! I'm even using it in gas and glow powered planes now!

Thank you very much. Simple and straight. I have been using Spektrum since I started 2 years ago. I tried to install and program an AR631 into a T28 1.2 m using NX8 forward programing. All the signatures of success were there. The first flight went about 10 seconds ended in disaster. If I try this process again I will give the reflex a second look. Again, thank you 👍.

Absolutely great video. I've been asking around about putting a gyro or SAFE in a plane I like, a FlightLine Hawker Sea Fury 1200mm and I get a bunch of people telling me not to do it and to start with a high wing flyer. I think theres still a lot of older people out there that look down on those that would like to use technology like SAFE in a plane they like, not everyone wants to start with a high wing.

    1. Here’s the problem I have with Forward Programming. Spektrum has you pick the GAIN channel in the first time AS3X setup, not the “Flight Modes” (FM) channel. They don’t have you set up the FM channel until you do the first time SAFE setup. What if you don’t want SAFE mode? Then what? Will a newbie figure out how to set up the FM channel? 2. The DX6 and NX6 don’t have a knob. How are they going to control the AS3X gains? Without the knob, the gains will likely be zero, but could be 50% or 100% of setting because the receiver defaults to adjustable gain. No gain channel = no gain. Will a newbie know to set the gains to “Fixed” and something like 30, 40, and 50 percent for roll, pitch, and yaw? 3. Don’t get me wrong, Spektrum’s AS3X/SAFE receivers are great. But the learning curve is steep.

Thank you so much for making this video :) you would also do this if you're moving a Spektrum receiver from one plane to another to make sure all your control services and stuff is correct.

AS3X and safe select are different. You can use the AS3X without being in a safe envelope. Sensor assisted flight envelope is what safe stands for. So you can use gyro without SAFE SELECT

Will AS3X work with a gas model AC? Does throttle come into play for activation? or is it always active until you control it with a switch?

  • @txkflier

Since I have a DX9 transmitter, I always use channel 7 for the receiver’s flight modes, 8 for panic, and 9 for gyro gains. That allows me to use channel 5 for retracts on switch A and 6 for flaps on switch D. The gain channel should be controlled by the knob. I generally set the AS3X gains to fixed and use 30% for roll, 40% for pitch, and 50% for yaw. The only time I’d use channels 5 and 6 to control the gyro is with a 6 channel transmitter.

@@Jays_rcgarage I would put the receiver’s flight modes channel on a 3 position switch so that one position turns the gyro off, the middle is AS3X (with SAFE envelope, if desired), and the other is SAFE with self-leveling with bank/pitch limits. Someone new to gyros needs an off position in case they get the gyro direction backwards. When I first got into gyros, I would take off with the gyro turned off and turn it on at a safe altitude, just in case. Now it doesn’t bother me to do a maiden flight in SAFE mode. Of course, I don’t need the gyro. I’ve only been flying R/C since 1963.. ;-)

Unfortunately, the forward programming does not work on the older safe receivers, and the older spektrum receivers only have AS3X flight assistance. I believe they can be updated. But I have not been computer literate enough, lol I use the app and it crashes and do not know actually how to use it.

Like you have to load the gains from the computer. Have you used the reflex on non fms planes ? I’m sure it wouldn’t be too bad if the plane had a similar wing span and weight

Hey! If you want to use reflex just get a cheaper receiver that doesn't have a gyro. Reflex works amazing. But if you prefer a AR630.. Just disconnect the wires from the reflex coming from the servos and plug directly into the AR630 bypassing the reflex system!
