Fyi, Bart quickly put up two videos debunking this one for your viewing pleasure. I didn't want to burn time responding, but in one he found a cousin of mine who claimed dad was alcoholic. For dad's sake, I did publish a comment on that video. We'll see if it gets deleted: Well. I learned a lot from this video. I never knew my father was a heavy drinker and I lived with him from 6th grade until 12th and we were very close until he died. He had some martinis on the regular because one of the low carb diets he loved was The Drinking Man's Diet of the 60s, which sold 4 million copies. But I never saw nor heard of my dad being tipsy. Atkins had sold 10 million copies by 2000, but the sales dwindled then and they went bankrupt in 2005. We got our copy in 1972. I don't know who this is in the video but I guess I met him once at dinner in Canada and he met my dad once? I don't know where the idea that I said dad was on Atkins for 4 years came from. Dad was low carb from at least the 50s when there were so many popular low carb books on the market and the Pennington diet was so popular.

That's twice now in this video you've replied with some cheap shot at the man's character. You first asked me if he "lied" about his title. No... he's a professor. And now you are suggesting the man will delete your comment from his video... He has done no such thing and I wonder how petty you are with cheap shots. Here's his reply... Bart Kay 6 days ago I'll ask Scott if he wants to respond. However given your known proclivities for creative editing of truth, I'm inclined to go with what he said regarding your father's alleged alcoholism which has been described as well known to the family at large.

Animals cannot tell us they do not want to be eaten. We only know because they run away or fight back. Likewise plants do not want to be eaten since they too fight back with thorns and chemical warfare such as carcinogens, phytates, oxalates, lectins, and other toxins which upsets a predator’s physiology or hastens death. All plants are poisonous to some degree or they would have gone extinct. All living things strive to survive, thrive, and propagate their species into the future. Preying upon any life form is a moral equivalency whether you are omnivore, carnivore, or herbivore. No one who eats has any more "ethics" than anyone else. All excuses aside, unless you are an autotroph, you are not exempt from killing to eat. There are no, "yeah but ..." excuses. You are killing something that doesn't want to be killed. That’s reality, that’s life.

I've seen two of Bart's videos, and something that immediately stands out to me is that he doesn't talk like a scientist. Scientists don't talk that way, not even some of the most arrogant ones I know of in hard sciences like physics talk in such a black or white sure way that he does. He doesn't deal with uncertainty or probabilities, everything he says is cold hard facts and anything slightly not aligned with that is just wrong according to him. The prevalence of heart disease in e.g. lower saturated fat consumers is almost certainly going to be greater than the prevalence of lung cancer in non-smokers, so the maximum possible relative risk for higher saturated fat consumption is necessarily smaller than it is for smoking.

As a former high school science teacher, I applaud Chris for his in-depth research and efforts to bring the best available science to us Americans and those in other countries who also enjoy the Plant Chompers videos. Chris, I am grateful to you for posting your informative videos without any recompense. I recall my frustration in the late 1980s when I was trying to find good sources of information on nutrition and how to bring my cholesterol levels down. I came to learn that most newspaper articles just jump on studies when they come out and try to frame them to get readership with really no background context or next to none. And even Time magazine had what I consider a very imprudent cover story that butter was back, even though there is really no scientific doubt that saturated fat is not good to include to any great extent for many of us. It is sad that we really cannot simply rely on mainstream media to give us good, balanced articles on nutrition that really reflect the best ongoing science. That's why your efforts are truly admirable and sadly, desperately needed. I know many people with advanced degrees who somehow fear eating a piece of whole grain bread because it has carbs but do not hesitate to dive into ice cream and steaks despite their high fat and high saturated fat levels. Some people are lucky and may never have problems with high meat and dairy consumption, but others like me have to reduce meat and dairy to low levels to achieve good LDL and cholesterol numbers. Again, thank you very much for your great public service in educating us about reasonable, science-based nutrition and the benefits of higher vegetable, fruit, and bean intake with less processed foods.

Saturated animal fats caused far more heart disease than whole plant carbs. I can take a pack a day smoker and add 5 more cigarettes to his daily habit and show no extra mortality from smoking them. Does that mean smoking is safe and doesn't cause health problems? No, if you take someone that doesn't smoke and have them smoke 5 cigs a day then it would definitely show an effect. I hope you can understand the logic here and why studies showing saturated animal fats to be harmless are flawed studies.

When I encountered your channel some months ago I was already doing Keto for a year and fully on the "Carbs are bad/the medical establishment got it all wrong" wagon since forever. At first I thought to myself : "eh, another biased vegan propaganda" "Ancel Keys killed more people than the black plague" (sorry). But I kept watching, and the more I watched your videos the more I was convinced. Even though I lowered my meat consumption considerably over the years before that (for ethical reasons), up until that point no vegan advocacy could change my mind regarding the health aspects - your videos did. So I watched about 20 minutes of a video of Bart Kay's yesterday (it was all I could take) where he basically did to Gil Carvalho what he did to you. Basically he tried to claim that Dr Carvalho was an incompetent sufferer of Dunning Krueger Vegan ideologue, which seems, apparently, to do whenever anyone expresses an opinion different from his. I have watched quite a few of his videos, and despite his personal diet, and general recommendations about diet, I have also seen him a number of times suggest that 1 the overall pattern is more important than an occasional deviation, and has said that there is plenty of evidence to suggest that fish can absolutely be part of a healthy diet... hardly positions taken by ideologues. In any case, his suggestion that an MD and PhD, the latter in biology from Caltech, is totally incompetent without any backing data other than his own assertions makes it hard to take Kay seriously as anything other than an attack dog. I have seen some Keto, Paleo and even Carnivore video channels before where the channel tries to play fair, looking at evidence (if selectively) and not going on ad hominem attacks.. .but this isn't one. Oh, just one other point. Kay, a man who is suppose to be trained as a scientist, and therefore logic basically seems to build his argument around several logical fallacies. 1. Ad hominem attacks. Basically attacking the speaker rather than the points they make (suggesting that you and others are ideologues, suffering from dunning-kruger, and are incompetent, without actually proving those points). 2. Appeals to Authority. What makes it worst, the authority he relies on is his own. 3. Straw man arguments. Essentially he misrepresents the arguments of you and Dr. Carvalho in order to make them easier to attack.

I also recently attended the annual conference of the American College of Lifestyle Medicine. Again, I was impressed with the number of scientific studies cited that support a WFPB diet. From my casual observations (I'm certainly not an expert on nutrition), it seems that support for a keto or carnivore diet is largely based on expert opinion, hearsay, anecdotal evidence, or a handful of short-term studies. I'm sticking with my WFPB diet for the foreseeable future. Thanks again for another entertaining, informative, high-quality video.

Some of my friends (also PhD candidates) decided to watch more and reported back that they were blown away by how obsessively sexual and angry he gets, as well as being erroneous on many points. I also did a bit of digging on him, and you might be interested to know that he received his Masters, and was a PhD student (according to one of his studies he published), yet when he published again, his PhD student designation disappeared, so clearly he either failed out or quit. Either way, I wanted to listen to his take on my videos to see if I'd missed a point, but I didn't see the value - I'd rather let him yell into the abyss and engage with caring, respectful people like you, Chris. It won't be the first nor the last time someone will try to debunk or have at your videos, but they will stand the test of time since they are really solid and founded on good faith, high quality scientific evidence. All in all, the carnivore diet will always increase the risk for cardiovascular disease, therefore it will never be recommended by any constructive nutritionist or Dr. A plant rich diet leads to great health outcomes and the great majority of the populace divert from the dietary recommendations very strongly and it creates errors in perception where people think the dietary guidelines are somehow flawed (they're not). Then you get people who create new diets such as the carnivore diet which might have short-term benefits anectdotally, yet these diets will always fall short since they are far too extreme - i only hope that this is a phase in the human mass psyche and that it will be over soon.

Thanks Ash! Sometimes I fret that we’ve gone through so many waves of high meat diets being popular - even the carnivore diet that Dr. Salisbury made so popular in the late 1800s. Meat is less healthy now and we have much more data, but here we are again. 🤷‍♂️

Please keep doing your videos. You’re sensible, scientific, open-minded and also come across as a really genuine guy. I say this as a PhD biochemist with a postdoc from Oxford. Nutrition experiments are much harder than something like enzymology where you can get a yes or no answer and control nearly all the variables. It’s incredibly important to have someone advocating for accurate science rather than pandering to what people want to hear about diets. Hopefully this “debunking” will help direct attention to your channel from people who are genuinely confused by these “professors” who resort to attacking your motives. Thank you for all the work you put into these videos. I’m hugely grateful.

Being incredibly certain about how trends play out in a field that is highly comples and there often isn't one answer (i.e. all calorie restrictive diets help with weight, not just carnivore or vegan or Mediterranean or low carb or whatever) is a yellow flag at least, if not even just a huge red flag. In physics, there is one correct answer for an equation. But not so in a field like nutrition. But then you have these people strongmanning their own views and pretending like they have the "one true truth" and that is what some people want to hear (easy simple answer to a question that can't have easy simple answers) and will thus drive viewership, so people will do it. Its gross, and unethical, but there really isn't a consequence for doing it, so people are incentivized to do it. Not to even get into the Ad hominem and dogmatic declarations, etc.

He will see it! He smells like a vulnerable narcissist so he will be hypervigelent, scanning for anything that references him that he can take offense at (including a comment like this) and raging about it. To him that probably serves as confirmation and justifies the anger he feels. It's not about having the best science, that is just something to dress up in and justify the aggression towards others... its 100% personal, his fragile ego vs the world, hence the personal insults and contempt for other people's experience, professionalism and even evidence that contradicts him. It's a terrifyingly destructive personality disorder (I would not be surprised if there's a trail of trashed personal and professional relationships wherever he has been and its always 'their fault'). Sadly there's little anyone can do to change or correct them because by its nature, everyone else is always wrong and they can't possibly need to change. He even says himself... there isn't evidence to back it up... so we are expected to believe him because: a) he KNOWS he is right and that feels good. b) therefore, everyone else MUST be wrong. c) disagreeing with him invalidates his fragile ego and feels like a personal attack, so they aren't just wrong, they are EVIL!! So insults and attempts to discredit everyone else to convince others not to believe them. But if you can't show it, you don't know it. It's a belief, not knowledge. .. and to be generous, maybe a hypothesis. Attempting to persuade people to disbelieve thousands of scientists by denigrating them, rather than presenting superior data supporting his own hypothesis, shows a deep character flaw. That's an important reason why its not simply an 'ad hominem' comment to make about that man, because people with NPD have very strong and unchecked confirmation bias, and little to no ability to really reflect on their own behaviour and decision making processes... which in turns means the things they profess to be experts on or are absolutely certain about cannot be relied on as wholly accurate because they have huge a blind spot that they will always be oblivious to. His manner inspires zero confidence from me. His whole vibe is that of a contrarian getting a kick from trolling the world.

What I can tell you is I was 300lbs about 10 years ago. I was eating the standard American diet following the food pyramid to a tee. I adhered to all the low fat option, drank "healthy" smoothies and ate my oatmeal daily with salads and low fat meat options and the weight just kept creeping up. I thought I must be one of those genetically over weight people. My wife would always tell people how "healthy" I ate and didn't understand why I could not get healthy and look healthy. So I tried to go vegan as I kept hearing I need to cut out the animal foods...so I did. I got an expensive juice machine, ate veggies until I was literally sick of them. That was the worst decision I've ever made. I go sicker, no skinnier and developed kidney stones, stomach ulcers and skin problems. After 2 years of that and felling horrible everyday, I was desperate and I started looking into other options. I found low the carb options and I went deep. Long story short, it worked amazingly. I was able to get down to around 240 lbs in less than a year but I was still having digestive issues as well as my ulcers and skin issues would not heal even taking more prescription drugs. As my diet evolved to what it is now...which is, strict carnivore, I am now 192lbs, I've train Brazilian Jiu-Jitsu with no issues and my stomach and skin is completely healed and I'm on no meds for it. I'm sorry but eating vegetables is what my issue was all along. I'm am 100% convinced and no one will ever change that. I am my own study and I have never felt better in my life! How ever I did listennto guy like this guy and I did attempt to add veggies back in once and it was a horrible experience. It all started back up again, the stomach, skin and the I lost my health again. Our currently food pyramid is developed soly for economic growth to support a food industry devoted to the cheapest most profitable food they can make. They pay good money to the rule makers to keep it that way. They don't care about your health...end of story. So stay sick y'all...I'll enjoy my health and vitality eat all the animals you don't want... LMAO
