I am now 35 years old. I have spent close to half my life in service of the US military and have seen first hand, many things that stand in direct contradiction to what the public were being told and what popular opinion held to be true. I enlisted at 17, in the year 2003, answering the call to defend my homeland and it's people against the overwhelming, direct threat of Middle Eastern Terrorists. Eventually, after 28 months in Afghanistan, in some incredibly dangerous areas, I began to learn that what most people know to be true and the TRUTH were two totally seperate things. That really set me in opposition to many ideas and things that I once believed to exist and began me down a path of real learning and understanding of what my nation's leaders goals were and who and how they benefitted from them. I was still too young and lacked the wisdom to begin to full understand the scope in which certain things are propagated and controlled by our trusted leaders. I just recently have really began to go through all the things that Dr. Chomsky speaks about and have literally spent the last week or so just finding and listening to everything I can get ahold of, craving the knowledge and understanding that this man has on how things really work and who benefits from them. I wish I would have began much earlier, and maybe somehow been able to just be in the presence of such an amazing mind , if only ever for a few brief moments. Sadly, from everything I've seen and experienced, everything that this man has tried to do will die with him, no mantle will be taken up on the level which he carried it, and we are now in the true downward spiral of the US Democratic system and the noose that the elite have will only tighten from here forward. This is a quote from a movie, but it hold more true than I ever wish that it would, I'm loosely paraphrasing, but "when democracy dies, it will be met with thunderous applause". I know that to be true and it saddens me that most people don't even understand what is really going on.

Thats true and sad that soldiers usually don't find this out til too late. But I think much of your pessimism is unwarranted. How many people do you know who actually sing the praises of politicians? People know this full well. Knowing something and doing something about power imbalance is too very different things. FIrst of all, the US is NOT a democracy. You can track down and find that in the early eighties is when corporations pretty much directly took over, but its not like it was a democracy before that. Americans didn't VOTE to invade Vietnam or Korea. Americans are traditionally isolationist AND communalist, rarely even caring what goes on outside their town let alone state or country. The idea that americans said "hey, lets all ship all the good jobs to overseas locations, and mess with so many countries that EVERYBODY hates us". That didn't happen. They lied, and ignored. Just to note, Switzerland and now Finland now have Citizens Initiatives at the federal level. The US has them in HALF the states. For all the TALK about democracy, the US has precious little. So its NOT about 'the death of democracy', its about whether its goign to be BORN.

It is interesting the wide hiatus between what we hear through politicians and corporate media and what we hear through studied research and factual information.

I guess if you write the law as you go along, then you'll always be right, even if it's really wrong.

A great teacher, intelligent analyst and a man who is attributes is anchored on truth and justice. Professor Naom has contributed immensely to humanity throughout his career by spreading knowledge, enlightening the world on various topics ranging from history, politics, diplomacy, security and economy. To supplement your point I'd add that regarding the 'continuum of views' and 'consensus' you may see a discussion on, say, the Vietnam War where a right-wing intellectual favours the use of napalm and the left-winger favours conventional bombing, use of napalm is going too far - and they have heated debates about this. So this becomes the discussion. The idea that they shouldn't invade Vietnam at all never even comes up. Both intellectuals essentially agree.

I am from the Caribbean,,and i am so relieved that ''THEY''have not silenced mr.Chomsky as is their normal practice against powerful opposition.

I am not sure how many times I have listened to this lecture, but I gain more appreciation of the points made each time I do. Thank you, University of Edinburgh for hosting the garden Noam Chomsky, and thank you Prof. Chomsky for doing all of this. Despite receiving some financial renumeration for your work, I believe you have much more positive effect on the world economy than the magnitude of what is received on your banking end.

To discover as an American just how thoroughly our society has internalized certain assumptions: aggression is never justified (unless we do it), while other countries maintain the capacity to act in their own interests at our whim, and if we decide they can't be trusted anymore we can preemptively perform non-aggressive invasion and occupation.

It's what they use to 1) gain popular approval for, and 2) find the human bodies to fuel their wars and maintain their police states. I find it fascinating how a disconnection between legal policy and how a basic respect for others' basic civil, political, and human rights can be disregarded for what a populous and populists see as legitimate... I am not, of course, referring to legal processes of legitimation, but I am referring to state crimes of illegal control. In such cases of abuse of process and dominance of others, control is exercised and committed with political jargon that claims such domineering actions are altruistic, which is far from the truth. A lack of appropriate respect for others feelings and basic rights gets quashed and sometimes completely ignored by the brainwashed perspective which often posits an illegal usurpation of communication (which should be 'freedom of speech') as being right... even though it goes against others' rights. So long as a country does not recognize the difference between illegal political control and a respect for others' rights, a chasm can grow and create negative social precedent which normalizes a lack of respect for others' rights. Don't get me wrong. I'm sure all of these people in controlling positions see themselves as caring and intelligent. I just have a hard time believing these kinds of lies, even when they are incessantly put forth and completely dominate a social, political, and technological landscape to a fascinatingly dysfunctional degree.

I heard that a cousin of mine has to take a college-level class aimed at teaching the students how to respect others' political positions. I hope that this class of his does not include the fictional stance that lying and engaging in state crimes is a good, honest, intelligent, or positive thing for society. Instead, I think one must try and differentiate between the obvious anger and stress that one has when they or someone else they care for has their rights abused and ignored by a state that fails to achieve truthful authority (ie by following the laws that have been authored- key word authored, as in authority) and a more poised, tactical, logistical defense of trying to have their basic rights respected. It is also rather unfortunate that the uninhibited folks who often talk about civil, political, human rights abuses, and supposed righteousness are the nitwits perpetuating and participating in state crimes in the first place. Perhaps their lack of honest understanding causes them to realize that engaging in criminal dominance is the only way to achieve their position of undue control and abuse... all while disregarding legal processes of legitimation. It is solely about control and self-enhancement at the expense of others, but done so in the name of collectivism and altruism.

Dynamo, I concur with your assessment. Even highly educated people are often fit for only narrowly conceived departments of life and employment. Knowledge and understanding of the wider world, it’s people and it’s events are lost on them. This is voice to text. You cannot hold Be responsible for spelling or grammar.

Kevin Carson is also critical of "American Libertarianism" over tendency to praise and defend giant global corporations as if those exist independent of Leviathan war machine and Nanny State. Where Chomsky quotes US doctrine to initiate violence anywhere to defend economic interests, rejecting judgment and overwhelming opposition everywhere and in USA, Libertarians like Cato Institute usu pretend that commercial firms which benefit are "free market" if they don't get direct cash grants.

I'm glad Chomsky addressed the concept of provocateurs at the very end of the speech, but he's gravely mistaken to say "I don't know if that will happen here" because clearly that happens everywhere and anywhere there's protesting. It happened here in my country in Aug. 2007 for the SPP meeting which Chomsky addressed in the speech as well. A documentary was made about it called The Nation's Deathbed.

The real problem i think is that all too many people take reports, information even rumors really literally without critical thinking. The general masses really needs to question and rannsack themselves about their assumptions and beliefs about the nature of politics and government, the origin of their knowledge and the process of how they are coming to accept what they believe. Amazing what people do believe.

technically paying tax is illegal under US and UK law since it is 'providing material support for terrorism', words used in both US and UK legislation. The UK terrorism act specifically makes it an offense to engage in financial transactions that you believe could be with a terrorist organization. Not sure about the US but I suspect its the same. So it doesnt matter if they dont regard themselves as terrorists, if you believe they are you have a legal stance. Good luck.

What you bring up is the narrow range of thought, at least amongst the majority of public intellectuals. Most ordinary folks are more or less just repeating the propaganda they have soaked up, as broadcast by the 'intellectuals' because it suits the profiteering of the ruling class.

Chomsky is not rerflexibly against stattes. He feels all organizations, including states must continually justify their existence. If an organization, including a governmental organization or agency, proves its worth, then it is of service to the people and should continue to function. A libertarian might even like this attitude, although Chomsky is by no means a libertarian. Chomsky is devoted to democracy and government's purpose is to serve the people.

Importantly, the UK alone, while an important ally of the US, doesn't scare monger it's public through news feeds to quite the same extent as American newstations. The people wouldn't let it slide.

The talk and the dream of world peace have been Extant For 1000 years. There is no peace. They are already preparing for the next great Kataklysm and slaughter. There is no end to it in Sight.

I'd say there is more to be done than that. People have to realise that they are part of and benefit from a system and thus they have some responisibility for it. So paying taxes and thus funding the war criminals and terrorists that make the laws is something that we are responsible for. We make it possible for them to do what they do. We should either have the courage to refuse to pay taxes or at least get out on the streets in protest.

Criticial thinking lends me to believe Europeans are the best chance we have for revolution; you must consider that the emerging powers of Southern America will likely build imperialistic aims not unlike the US did in the late 1700's. Ergo, the best chance we have for peace is a stern European enforcement of it.

The RICH don't influence international policy at all.... the middle class does. It's sad that despite the VAST wealth of the RICH that the poors refuse to allow them a say in society..... The reality is that when anyone's "team" is exposed for the evil it does/is the immediate response is counter attack. If this is the truth and the RICH have been destroying peoples lives for personal gain and using the media to divert attention away from this, is it not an admirable thing for someone to try to inform people? The RICH are in control and untill people acknowledge this any efforts for change can be co-opted by the very people causing the problem. Also, if the problem isn't known how can it be fixed?

Never liked Orientalism. Paradox? Professor based in the West reads western literature about the orient. Conclud the literature is Eurocentric! Maybe I have misunderstood something? With that said loved listening to Chomsky and Saids analysis of the peace process (search KZread: talk from early 1990's Chomsky + Said)
