Proenneke's Log Cabin Tour | Off Grid Cabins in Alaska | My Perspective

#logcabin #offgrid #Alaska
A complete tour of Dick Proenneke's log cabin on upper Twin Lakes in Alaska, including his elevated log cache, his woodshed and the neighboring cabins owned by Spike and Hope Carrithers and Weiser.
See the inside of the cabin, the woodworking details up close, the tools and other gear he used to live off grid at Twin Lakes for 30 years. Throughout the video, I pause during my hikes in the surrounding mountains and while inspecting the log buildings to reflect on Proenneke's life, his undertakings, what I like about his homestead, what I don't like and would do differently and his influence on me.
Richard L. Proenneke was an inspiration not only because of the basic home that he built and that he stayed in it for almost thirty years, but also for his thrift, resourcefulness, self reliance, perseverance and connection with nature. What I was pleasantly surprised about after reading more of his story and talking to the people in town who knew him well, was that he was not a hermit and actually liked people, socializing often. He hosted many guests, some just for the day and some overnighters, including family, friends, hikers, park staff and others. He visited family and friends in Port Alsworth, Primrose Iowa and California, where his brother Raymond lived. He spent the last five years of his life in California with his brother before passing away in 2003. His ashes were scattered on what is now known as Proenneke Peak, a mountain behind his log cabin.
Awkwardly, I spend an hour at the end explaining how Dick Proenneke inspired me to build my off grid homestead, including my log cabin, forest kitchen, log cabin sauna, wood shed and upcoming buildings including a timber frame workshop and root cellar.

Man, Mr Dick cut the trees and built his home. He also did a vast amount of tasks that most people never knew about. He had food that lasted a very long time and even built a keep to store it. He was an amazing human being. And there's no one like him

Acid Rainburn - Thanks for sharing your situation. I think it resonates with a lot of us. As we get older, our perspectives change, but our bodies don't allow us to do the things we wish we could. Things that I took for granted when I was younger, now I wish I could do and so much more. Like you, this video and others provide a look into places I may never get to, but can appreciate.

Plus if you're aware of the location, and made the decision to go visit, you probably have a very deep respect and a long time interest in seeing Dick Proenneke's cabin. I was looking very closely for any initials that people had carved into the logs and was happy that I couldn't find any.

You are already a legend. When I tell someone about your YT videos they say, "Yeah, I watch those. They are great." We can be inspired by others but we cannot be them. We are ourselves. I will be 70 in a few months and I still have aspirations to be totally independent and to go to certain places. Your pilgrimage was Dick's place in Alaska as well as your own place you have built. I wish to go to Mt. Athos on pilgrimage, but my own house my wife and I built 36 years ago is also our haven and a daily pilgrimage. Thank you, once again for the inspiration you bring to me in your pilgrimage in the woods of Ontario.

Absolutely Beautiful. I would have been 5 yrs old when Proenneke built his cabin. The Carpentry is gorgeous. I spent my childhood vacations on Mt. Wilson California, so I understand this Nostalgic place. My late father was a Solarphysicist. He taught me all I know of Astronomy & Rocks. I hope you had great stargazing the nights you were there. The sound of the wind among the trees, the sound of the waves gently lapping upon the shore, pine trees with moss, animal tracks, chiccadees, blue Jays, deers. The first deer I ever touched was a buck with long antlers. I was just a toddler . I fed him apple peels. I pet his soft velvety nose and looked into his glossy black eyes. My father was right beside me. I'll never forget it. Just as I know you'll never forget this experience. It'll live in your memory for years to come. Someday I hope you are able to bring your family. 🌌 My favorite writer was John Muir, author of Kings canyon California, and Tennyson. I hope you brought a telescope, or binoculars, or monocular, and a writing journal. 🌺

You know it really wasn't that long ago when our ancestors had to live this kind of life. My great grandfather fought in the Civil War. He totally lived off the land and you know his ancestors had to do the same so maybe it is just ingrained in us to be drawn to this kind of life. I never would have guessed that I would remotely want anything to do with that kind of life but watching you and being witness to your Alaskan journey has made me wish I were you, in a way. Or that I was young enough to be able to get out there and experience the wild and the nature and the glorious scenery. Back to natural. This was the cabin that he built completely on his own. Those pans he made from the old tin of the oil cans, even the hinges. It is almost like watching him again. Thank you, what a trip through time. Amazing. It is wonderful that the family gives lets people go and get a view into the past.

The cans were not oil cans, they originally held avgas, (gas for small aircraft), that were widely used in those days in the Alaskan bush for whatever an ingenious individual could devise. My wife and two young boys spent time at Twin Lakes in the summers of 1969 and 1971. Dick and the Twin Lakes country were very important as it turned out , in the boys' lives. Particularly the youngest, who grew up to be a successful hunting guide and bush pilot.

This is an experience of a lifetime, Shawn... One you can draw on, from time to time. While Alaska's Twin Lakes are without a doubt, a beautiful place, you also have an awesome piece of paradise too. Different as your place is from where you are now, it is yours to call home. It is yours to create whatever your hearts desire and, it is no less awesome. Most of us following your journey would give up the rat race and join you in Canada. Each place has its own beauty, its own character and charm and each are as fulfilling as the next, in its own way. It is only natural that having respected and admired Mr DP, and to actually be walking in his footsteps, seeing and then walking into his cabin and touching his tools, would be not only emotional, but overwhelming too. It's a spiritual journey... Kindered spirits without a doubt. It's all about been human so don't be meloncholly, just enjoy and savour every moment. Thank you for taking us on your awesome journey. I am looking forward to you returning home and seeing all the wonferfully creative stuff you do. Your are so very blessed. UK.

This series of videos illustrated to me what I had suspected all along. You are the real deal, Shawn. Watching you in Dick Proeneke’s cabin, and the way you handled the items you picked up with such absolute reverence proved to me that your deep respect for him and what he accomplished is genuine and what you are paralleling your life to. Watching other channels, I see people sort of bend their story to appease the channel, trying to please the masses to boost their numbers. You are simply taking us along for the journey, and for that, I am grateful.🌲
