The only new mouthpieces that I didn’t have to send to a refacer was a PMS Germany Guardala MBI and a Jody Jazz Chicago-everything else had be sent in because of production flaws

Thank you so much for the review! I was curious about how these new FL Links sounded. Your comments and testing the two mouthpieces really helps in giving an idea about these pieces. I just cannot believe how it is possible for a company of that magnitude to produce something with that many defects. Unbelievable! However, your sound (and playing) is so beautiful and I can only imagine how you'd sound on a good mouthpiece! Thanks!

Ottima recensione amico. 👍🎷

I got one, had a really harsh sand paper like sound. After awhile I was able to make it sound good

What a refreshingly honest and thorough review. You've got a follow from me and I look forward to watching more of your content. I've spent days debating wether or not to purchase a modern Otto Link, knowing the risks involved and this has helped me move forward and forget that plan! I think the price is enticing but it's easy to forget it may be comparatively cheaper than boutique alternatives but it's STILL a lot of money for most of us. I'm going to save for an alternative. Retro Revival? I need to do some research. Thanks 😊

Paul: Remember that the Otto Link Company sold the company to the JJ Babbitt sometime in the mid-70's. Babbitt then proceeded to change the mpc, making it longer, having less flooring, messing w/the dimensions. So the Babbitt Link was nothing like the FL Links or the NY Links etc, etc. Then sometime in the early 2000's they came out w/the New "Vintage" Slant Sig HR and the metal Tone Masters. There was supposed to be a fair amount of hand finishing w/those mpcs. Both mpcs got great reviews from places like Sax Alley and various online reviewers. So it was quite natural for Babbitt to try again w/the FL mpcs. Apparently they missed the mark by your review. So I have a 2nd generation FL Link 8*. The one w/the USA in small font between the bands. Also has the 8* in small font on the right side on the mpc as you are holding it in your hand.Knock on wood but all those things you cited on the new FL Link are not there in my mid-60's FL Link. So it really isn't Mr. Otto Link that is making a substandard mpc he is deceased. Nor is it Ben Harrod who Mr. Link sold the Company to in 1955 and continued to make great mpcs. It is the JJ Babbitt Co. They own the name and they do what they feel like doing. Some times they hit it right like w/the New "Vintage" m,pcs and some times they miss the mark like w/the new FL Mpc. So anyway did you ever review the New "Vintage" Links? If so what did you think or where can I find your review?

Great review. I figured as much, but I was very close to ordering a couple. Now I’m not going to, thanks to your honest assessment. You can obviously play to a high level, so your take on the feel was really more important than hearing you; a good player can make mediocre gear sound great, which you do. I have a couple of vintage Florida 7*’s, both play well. I’ll focus my neurosis elsewhere! Thank you so much!

I have been playing a Daddario select jazz on my tenor. I wanted a link and bought one. Sadly It does not respond well for me. I cannot even get my altissimo G to work which is very easy for me on my select jazz. Some lower notes will play but can sometimes sound erratic with some warble. I will keep it but it’s not great. Maybe in the future I will try a retro revival.

It’s outrageous for a defective mpc that costs $300. How is the detail precision on Vandoren V16 and Java?

Since I've been refacing mouthpieces, I just look for good link blanks at this point. They all need work for sure

Simply the fact that things cost more today to live in general. I know people need to watch budgets.

It’s hard to imagine how a mouthpiece like this could be made in the USA, to the standards you’re describing-at a profit-for the price they’re selling it for. So you’re basically buying a roughed in blank. If you want all the finish work already done, you’re going to have to pay more.

I am a 45-year player and I picked one of these up new the other day. The fit and finish were awful. The seam line down the middle was visible on both sides, the rails and tip work was god awful and the piece doesn't play well. I wanted this company to succeed so badly but they just gave up. JJ Babbitt, you are done.

I’d rather get a Retro Revival mouthpiece over any of the modern mouthpieces by the Babbitt company if I was looking for a Link.
