Thanks for your thoughts! In our experience, it really depends on the size and complexity of the project at hand. Robust projects might require both roles, or even more. Whereas for smaller projects, it's best to concentrate responsibilities in the hands of only one person to avoid unnecessary clutter in the team.
what about product managers. Aren't they responsible for product vision and strategy, and product owners for business requirements like backlog, etc?

Great question! Yes, product managers typically have a highly strategic role and are accountable all throughout the product lifecycle. Compared to them, we could say that the role of product owners requires a more narrow focus and closer work with the project team. However, not every team and not every project/product requires the presence of both product managers and product owners. More robust projects might entail the need for both roles, whereas smaller projects might require just one of them to avoid unnecessary clutter in the team.
