Product Manager VS Project Manager - Key Differences & Which Is BEST for YOU

#googlepm #projectmanager #productmanager
Hi All,
Today I'm going to deep dive into the similarities and differences between product managers and project managers.
Questions we'll strive to answer:
1. What is a product manager?
2. What is a project manager?
3. What are the similarities between a project vs a product manager?
4. What are the differences between a project manager vs a product manager?
5. Which role is better: product manager or project manager?
6. How do I decide for myself and based on my career goals which job is a better fit?
I'll also go through a framework on how to think about each role to determine which is better for you:
1. Are you strategic or tactile thinker? Product management is more strategic whereas project managers really focus on the tangible and specific details.
2. Do you like variety in your job or do you want to focus and deep-dive on one topic? Product managers are going to be experts in their products, whereas Project managers will have more variety since their projects will end and they will be given new projects.

Oh my god. Your video was super helpful - thank you SO SO MUCH. Those questions at the end made me realize that I want to pursue Project Management instead of Product Management, and that I've been in the wrong career. I noticed looking back on my resume that most of my experiences have been leading teams and that I naturally asked my coworkers questions about projects that a Project Manager would ask - such as start/end dates, details of the project, expectations, and deadlines - and I enjoyed it lol. Idk why I didn't realize this "calling" before! Thank you again!!

Top Video Emma, Noticed of late, Product Manager roles are becoming more and more prevalent on job posting boards than the Project Manager ones, & I think it’s because more organizations that make up the hiring ecosystem are of the startup kind than the Enterprise one. Wish you also touched on the earning potential of both roles, & certifications they also offer as well; Since the Project Management Cert seems to be more widely recognized + I’ve really not seen a popular Product Manager cert, that carries the same regard as the renowned PMP one.

Product and Project managers need one another to kick ass. Most of PO will stick a high level timeline that eventually rely on PM to break it down on timeline to deliver. PM will always need PO to set the commercial direction to start running. This is almost always true for large cross functional teams delivering Apps with multi features depending on domain specialist team. The challenge is adapting to changes impacting the rest, like a boat in the storm with all the crew hanging for dear life:). Great video! Thanks.

Glad it was helpful! You ask a 2nd great question which I think ultimately is dependent on the company and your own skills. As a Project manager, my goal was to try to keep the ship as steady as possible but work always ebbed and flowed. As a product manager I find a lot of my work is front loaded and then more smooth. I think it depends on what you prefer!

  • @RecipeforSuccess1

    @RecipeforSuccess1

    2 жыл бұрын

Hi Izabela - it depends on the organization, but they definitely have to work in harmony to get software or any other product out the door. Why? Because while the product manager has to make sure the right product gets made, it's up to the project manager to make sure it's actually implemented and operationally adopted. No product means to project and no project manager means no end user using the product. Working well together is definitely important! I hope that answers your question.

Thanks Emma for creating this video. I am wondering If I can get your thoughts on this - I recently discovered product management but my impression so far is that I can be paid well (sweet sweet tech salary), don't need to code, don't need any special certifications/MBA/MS Computer Science (or any specific degrees for that matter) or specific experiences. Seems too good to be true. Wondering if I am missing something?

  • @RecipeforSuccess1

All of that is true! The catch/considerations can be: 1) some companies do want to see a tech background OR MBA - I haven't hit that ceiling yet, but it is there....2) you're dependent on your developers to actually get your product out the door so if your team can't cut it, your product will never make it to the end users....maybe I should make a video....
