Product manager vs product owner | do you need both?

Is quite common to confuse the role of a product manager vs a product owner, there are good reasons for it and I go through them in this video. Who really owns the product, what are the differences and similarities of the roles, do they have any conflicts? And more importantly, do you need both product managers and product owners?
Product manager vs product owner is a very common topic in different online communities, and causes quite many confusions, specially for those applying for these type of role for the first time.

My name is Juan Rodriguez, I’m a product director at a tech company in Finland, my experience is in building both desktop and cloud solutions focused on B2B, I care a lot about product design identifying the right customer problems and finding the solutions that bring the biggest impact to the company.
My education is on electronics and automation and my early jobs were focused on machine vision and to some degree robotics, you can imagine I don’t like manual processes very much and love to automate as much as possible :) I moved to Finland in 2006 and started working as a software engineer, after a while I moved into product teams, with roles like application manager and product manager. Currently I am the product director driving product managers and helping them grow in their careers

Yeah, really hard when roles start to overlap. How's in your case, do you have both roles?

You need to understand the problem first. This takes various user research from a UX researcher. Creating features is a part of the design ideation, prototyping, and testing phase. You don't just pick what features you build for a development team on a roadmap. It's expensive and not customer-centered. Solve problems for customers. Don't create busy work! Don't make assumptions about the problem. Understand the root causes of the problem.

Customer centricity is key to succeed! Understanding the actual problem is the only way to find a solution. In your case is a PM, PO or designer who best understands the problem?

In my opinion, no. But I've seen many companies having both roles, typically companies that implement SAFE, in these ones typically the PMs sets directions and plans new features while POs execute those plans, and overlapping responsibilities happen often. I think PMs need to act as POs when it comes to Scrum practices. In my opinion a good team is formed by PMs and Tech/Team leads working close together .

The fact that you personally prefer one role (product mngr or -owner) has more to do with your inability to deal with the complexity of having both roles in a company rather than the reality as 'is".

This is a topic where is pretty hard to agree with everyone, even if most modern tech companies tend to have only one of these roles. In any case, I'm just offering my point of view, clearly yours is different

I actually don't need the music in the background, but I've heard this in other videos and it works for me. Thanks for sharing and sorry that it makes it hard to understand when I talk. I'll pay attention to this
