Business Analyst vs. Product Owner in Agile

Product ownership seems simple in principle, but it can be a difficult thing to understand in reality. Many business analysts are interested in becoming a product owner/manager but are not sure what steps to take to get there.
In this video, I provide a realistic understanding of how product management works in enterprise environments vs. how it works in software companies.

I am looking for a career change from mutual fund sales to BA roles but was still confused about the BA roles. This video was so easy to understand the hierarchy. Thank you .

I think it was necessary to mention that product owner is a role in some agile methodologies such scrum. That means that in this environment it is not a job title.

Hi Cheery, the software is Microsoft Visio. We have a course where we teach students how to use Visio the way it was used here. bablocks.com/visio-for-business-analysts/

Totally agree on the point that traditional larger non-IT companies split the Product Owner role into a business and an IT side. Thank you for sharing.

@@Savvynomad225 the general rule is that IT follows the Business. The Business is connected to the Sponsors, therefore the business provides the funds and has the decision in the end. The IT-side Product Owner reflects the interests of the Business Product Owner in front of the IT delivery team.

Correct on all points Agile BA. I'd also like to add that in reality, IT will often be concerned much more with controlling costs than with delivering good products. As a BA, you have to sometimes lobby for your customers to get IT onboard and fully engaged. If you have a good IT product owner, you'll have to do less of this. But if your IT product owner is fixated too heavily on cost control, then you should play a bigger part in influencing them to think about product design. Thanks for sharing your thoughts.

Apply for jobs. Sell yourself. Go out and meet people in the BA world. Basically, do something about it.
