Mickey will figure it out, can't wait for the update when he does,
i am a 20 year old girl and love fashion and making jewelry.. but i saw a clip of this on tiktok and was so amazed by how you can just.. basically make anything you set your mind to! i love this a lot and may have just discovered a new interest :) excited to watch all your other videos :D

I used to have a cat that could open anything - child locks, pet locks, you name it. I laughed really hard during this video as I recognized that behavior in Mickie and immediately saw where this was going! Good job, and good luck as something tells me you're going to be building a LOT of Mickie-proof items around the home.

Oh Mickey, you resourceful little minx. Maybe one day you’ll realize you will never have to worry about food again. Great project, Keith!

Haha I suspect he will always be like this!!! Thank you for watching Trish
The Mickey shots are hilarious😂. What an adorable cat and great he gets well with your new cat !!!
Great project! I love your way of talking through your process. We had a cat who could unscrew the lid off the per food container we had...it was the size of a bucket and held a while bag of food. I kept thinking the kids were leaving it open. Until I watched her spin it open, pulling towards herself with both front paws with enough force it would go all the way around....she even knew to pick her paws up to let it spin freely.....😂
Mickie is very determined! I wonder how long it will take him to figure out how to open this one!?

I give it 2 weeks until he figures out he can push the handle away whilst sitting on the work surface.
I have cleverly designed a cat door that has two sides: an only OUT side which I lock at night because I can only sleep when all 3 of my cats are inside 😳; and an only IN side that means no matter what they can get in but not out that door. It works with two of the cats but the calico named Elizabeth, as in Queen E, regularly lets herself out the only in which is impossible… except for her!! 😱 never underestimate the capacity of a cat!
Mickie is a legend ❤ Stray cats needs to be resourceful to survive.

Yeah he knows every trick in the book! Keep expecting to find a cat shaped hole in the front of the bin cabinet
That’s so funny. Love Mickey’s determination. His poor little face at the end 😂. Excellent solution 👍🏼
Every great YT channel has something that makes it unique. Sorting out mistakes, made by yourself or others, provides so many teachings moments! So when you mention a mistake or problem, I chuckle joyfully and wait to see how it’s resolved!! Keep up the great work, Keith. Also, it was nice to see the cats.❤
Para cord might work well instead of shoe laces, will reduce the shock on the screws too. Nice build as always!
Mickie is so sweet you can’t blame him for trying. Great job

Just get a different cat?
Ah great job but poor Mickey. He looks so peeved off because he can't get into the bin now. We have two kittens who also love getting into the bins. Little brats.
What a cute kitty! You know some people would just get rid of the cat. You can tell this guy really loves cats. It’s great to see love inspired innovation.
I like taking paracord and pulling the sheet off for making flat retention chords. They bind a bit less than flat strap or webbing because they are round but easily collapse flat when needed.
Oh, poor Mickey he looked so sad that you'd taken away his extra food source/🤣🤣 That said, he also didn't look too impressed after his bath.😂 The finished result is not only practical but also looks great - as if it was always made for that space.👍

Very clever and nicely done...but something tells me that Mickey is plotting a solution, lol!
That Mickie is a clever kitty! Nice of him to help you text out the new bin so thoroughly
What a villain - and so cute with it! I love watching anything you do, but Mickey-proof projects are the best! Thanks for the entertainment and the info.
I made something similar for a laundry bin a couple of years ago. However I made the hinge a bit different. The oversized "dowel" just needs to sit in an open hole (half hole), which has the advantages of making assembly and disassembly easier since the door can just be dropped in after the frame is installed in its final location. Removing the door is made easy for removing dust and lint from the cabinet. I didn't use any chains to limit how far the door swings open, but wooden blocks used as end stops on each of the side panels (inside). As the door swings open, the inner side panels (attached to the door) have a tab which stops against the blocks (not sure how clear this explanation is).

Great idea
Great looking project that Keith. Laughing at your very intelligent cat 😂. We took in a stray cat 12 years ago but have never had any problems like that. A relative took in a neglected dog that was deprived of food and all through his long life he was obsessed with looking for food whenever he could. Not sure if your cat will ever forget but he's adorable 🥰
One of my cats would have that open in a jiffy. She would hang off of the handle and throw herself back. Using the handle as a pivot point. she does something like that to our backdoor and lets herself in or out depending on where she wants to go. She also does a double bounce on two walls to get access to our bedroom balcony, then slides the fly screen open and finally slides the bedroom window open. Of course she never closes anything !
Your cat is a low-key genius
The first few minutes had me cracking up. One of our cats is food obsessed too, and she can't stand any closed drawers, cabinets, bins, etc. We had to install child locks almost everywhere, lol. Mickie seems pretty determined, has he tried to jump up and hang on the handle yet? I have a feeling you'll be replacing that with an inset handle eventually😹
Love Micky, such a character, he’s definitely the star of this project😻
Where there’s a Mickie, there’s a way! 🤣 Mickie: you’re an indoor cat now…no need to forage in the bin! Great project, and thanks for sharing the ups & downs of the process.
Hi Keith, once those hinge pins wear a bit, a couple of those soft close piston thingies might be a good idea.
Regarding the assembly problem maybe the hinge pins could sit in U shaped slots instead of holes so the opening part could just drop in from the front.
We used to use adhesive child locks, the kinds you use on windows or fridges, etc. Pretty cheap and work well for the devious little ninjas. 🐈🐱
loved the way Mickie walked away in disgust...

Awesome! Thank you!
I recently purchased an almost identical garbage bin from Amazon. Our dog was flipping open the lid and when we put weights on it, she knocked it over. Yours looks much more sturdy than the one I assembled and I like your shoelace solution!
Nice execution. Bike chain is often useful in these situations as it is somewhat resistant to bilateral movement and twist.
Love the intro to the video and the "why" this project 😂 Mickie is a smart beautiful cat that luckely as now found a good home with a loving family ❤ Love this project and the video. Well done.
For a cat, our Mickie is very dogged! Great solution Keith, and I think I'm going to try building this for my (nearly finished, only been three years) workshop. Thanks very much. P.S. Good to see Mickie and Hazel getting on so well and loved the 'thwarted Mickie' segment.

Haha yeah Ria says Mickie is a dog all the time, I think you could be right! If you do build one I'd love to see how it turns out! Cheers Keith
To replace the shoelaces look at Steel wire rope (SWR) most builders merchants will have some, you can get it a few mm thick, and it holds a lot of weight!, to stop it from rubbing or stuff like that you can also get some heat shrink plastic to cover it. It should cost no more than about £10. Good luck.
Love Mickies determination!!! WE have 4 kitties in my household and there have been times I have had similar issues.
Well done trash bin, truly wonderful cat. The next time you're improving the bin, consider painting the bottom edge of the MDF panels. Moisture can sneak into to places where it'll cause trouble almost as well as cats can. ;)
I am going to give the biggest hug to my cat who is not even interested in bins or any food we leave open 😺
Bless you Keith, that is another labour of love for the benefit of Mickie ! There must be something in the name, I had to make a number of Anti-toddler devices years ago for my son Michael who was physically very strong and a determined escapologist so all commercial solutions failed ! Nice project in the end, with any amount of planning there is often something one overlooks and you overcame all the issues to result in a stylish and practical solution !

Mickie is a proper hooligan.
Excellent work. I designed a single bin like this for my kitchen ( which my partner was building). It worked perfectly and has continued to do so for 12 years ( exactly the same amount of time I had to wait for the kitchen)!
Maybe you should keep the old bin and put some cat treats in it to keep Mickie happy! LOL! Great project - it's given me some ideas for my narrowboat. Thanks! :)
What a resourcefull kitty! Nice build! Might make something similar for our bathroom to sort the laundy, thanks for the idea!
I think a truck bed cable or something like that would be a good replacement for the shoelace
Thats hillarious with Mickey has he been watching topcat. Our rescue dog is very food orientated and we have had him 2 years. Good video. Mickey knows what he wants
Mickey, being able to get into anything, seems to have all the qualities of a ... cat burglar! Nice project, Keith, might be making something similar. Not that our pets get into the bins but we have to be more diligent in what trash goes where, so two separate bins would be an option.
That is a good looking and very useful bit of kit. Isn't it amazing what lengths we will go to, to counter the foibles of our pets! All the best
I foresee this being a battle of the wills and a longer game than its already been 🤣 you have just created the next level of the puzzle for him to solve Keith 😁😈
Love how clever Mickie is! (And gorgeous!)
Mickie, shaking his paw in the air, “Damn you, human!” Great job, Keith!
Eagerly awaiting the follow-up: Mickie had figured out how to jump on the table and push open the door from above, then blissfully parachuting down into the bins.
I feel you on this one. My son does the same stuff to our trash can.
I really love to see this kind of videos. Amazing work! My dad used to do some diy, nothing like this but it reminds me of him and our trips to the diy stores. ❤ greetings from Germany 🥰👍
the finishing looks good. good ol miki
Nice build Keith, also some useful tips on painting MDF which I must make use of. Our cat was pretty cunning in the same regard, you cant help but love the determination and ingenuity of them!
Mickie's a determined little bugger aint he!
Yah more Mickey 😃 But seriously you could be less dramatic with Mickey walking away after realising this whole project was about denying her access to the treats. Nice bins. Love you man.
Mickie is smart! Another great project - thank you!

I was planning to build exactly this! My cats like to access my bins as well. Thanks for the video, it solves some of the things I had not thought about yet
lol what a little lad your cat is 👍😂
Good project too. Good to see you back on a build 👍
Mickie is a champ. I love that you had to make this lol
Mickie is a legend, and he'll never give up the fight.
You need to rename this cat Houdini! I've had horses that could use their tongue and get out of their stalls. Keeping them safe can be done with a little ingenuity.
Mackie the Moocher. He just wants to make sure you keep your creative and design juices flowing. Thanks for another great video mate 👍🇦🇺
Nice job Keith!
That is one tenacious cat lol!
That's one tough cat! (Wouldn't want to meet him in a dark alley if he was in a hungry mood)
this is such a good idea and executed brilliantly
another brilliant video can't wait for the next one
Got to love Micki
Love Mickey!
A couple of velcro cable ties would work well in place of those shoe laces, the ends wont fray and you can cut them round at the ends to match you fixing washers. Another great video btw.
That is one insanely smart cat
Great idea Keith. Good video.
What a great idea 😊
Nice one! Love your scrappiness. I find it impossible not to make mistakes in woodworking. Owning up and finding a clever fix or biting the bullet and starting over is what makes the difference between an amateur and a pro ;)

Where I live the Kitty Cat would just have to sit and watch the MDF dissolve in the moist air.
What do we have is little bench, and over this bench we have the bin, hope the new bin works Keith
I wished I was so eager to achieve my goals like Mickie is.
A friend of mine had a dog suffocate on a bin bag when it managed to jump into their bin. I think making something less penetrable is very wise. Micky's a really smart cat!
Super job 👏🏼👏🏼
Brilliant 😊
👍👍👍Cat proof bin, good luck with that. Thanks
Great project Keith. Love the problem and solution projects. Nice to see the whole process and the bumps on the way. All the best mate 👍

Lovely build, endresult and video! As far as assembly goes: fitting the pieces together whilst they lay on a side could work, but would be fiddly I guess. Thats what I would have done I think. Great video! ❤

The look on Mickey`s face 😁😁 A very useful build. 👍
Looks fantastic. I always wear my safety bobble hat for protection. When I made a similar but no wear near as nice bin, I put a wooded block on the inside as a stop.

Perhaps the best intro to a YT video I’ve ever seen 😂 🐱
Good result Keith. I'm still calling a win for Mickey though.🙂
Cat looks mighty pissed off at the end! 😂😂
Mint idea
Doesn’t your waste start to smell with bins that size? Love Mickey what a beauty! ❤
can't wait for the next chapter in this exciting drama... where Mickie learns how to drag the power tools in through the cat flap...
Should a drill/driver and a large holesaw go missing, I'd check Mickey's basket - I don't think he likes to lose! Great build, and a sturdy answer to the moving parts conundrum too.
