"Probing the Dark Universe" - A Lecture by Dr. Josh Frieman

Ғылым және технология

In this one-hour public lecture Josh Frieman, director of the Dark Energy Survey, presents an overview of our current knowledge of the universe and describe new experiments and observatories. Over the last two decades cosmologists have made remarkable discoveries: Only 4 percent of our universe is made of ordinary matter - atoms, molecules, etc. The other 96 percent is dark, in forms unlike anything with which we are familiar. About 25 percent is dark matter, which holds galaxies and larger-scale structures together and may be a new elementary particle. And 70 percent is thought to be dark energy, an even more mysterious entity which speeds up the expansion of the universe. Josh Frieman is senior staff scientist at the Fermilab and Professor of Astronomy and Astrophysics and member of the Kavli Institute for Cosmological Physics at the University of Chicago. The Dark Energy Survey is a collaboration of 300 scientists from 25 institutions on 3 continents, which built and uses a powerful 570-Megapixel camera on a telescope in Chile to carry out a 5-year survey of 300 million galaxies and thousands of supernovae to probe dark energy and the origin of cosmic acceleration.

    It's so bizarre how KZread has chosen to provide this video to our sleeping subconscious. I woke up to this too, then read the comments about so many people waking up to this playing, and that's when I even realized that I woke up to it too and was really freaked out. But now I put this on as I'm laying in bed trying to go to sleep. That's called a checkmate, KZread.

    Try, Ken Wheeler explaining Plato's Field Theory. He has over 2000 videos on Field Theory. Took me awhile to understand his vocabulary. Then, I understood how the Universe works. Did take years, now I understand. Time began when the Dielectric energy decays/leaves the Inertial plane/Bloch Wall, inflation. Then, the Dielectric energy decays into the Dielectric Voidence Field/Magnetism, the Grand Expand. Magnetism gives Magnitude to the Universe. These are the transverse waves that EM waves travel on/in. Both transverse waves are needed for light, EM waves to travel on/in. Gravity is the opposite; Magnetism into Dielectric Energy, then onto the Inertial plane. What I think I learned from Ken Wheeler and Eric Dollard. Good Luck! Sometimes you got to do what you have to do! Not always your fault. Don't give up, it took me decades. 2 years of Electronic Technition and 3 semesters of Nanotech. They taught my their lies. I learned Field Theory from Ken Wheeler and found the truth about our Space Universe. Dark Matter is opposite Matter in Counterspace. Aether Field Theory is correct. Light doesn't move, it's perturbations of the Aether Field. Compression, FLASH, so called photon, Rarefaction. Watch, The Slo Mo Guys, "Light at 10 trillion FPS". Maybe you are lucky you didn't have to learn THEIR lies first! There aren't particles everywhere. Duck here comes a particle, yeah right. It's all Aether Hyperboloid's and Vortices, surrounded by Toruses of Magnetism.

    Question - If the universe is 13.8 billion years old, how are we seeing light from stars 30 billion light years away? Wouldn't that mean that, that starlight started on its journey towards us 30 billion years ago, making the age of the universe at least 30 billion years old?

  • @carljohnson8732

    I wondered this myself. After having always heard nothing exceeds the speed of light, there is one thing that apparently does- inflation. The expansion of the universe is occurring at faster than light speed. That’s the only possible explanation as to objects being further away than 13.8 billion light years.

    There's a consideration to make in this question. Are we talking about a static universe? Cause then ur right. The universe isn't static though. It extends, light bends. Consider that we're looking back in time basically the lights u see now is where it came from approx 13 billion years ago. This means the actual distance ur looking at a certain thing is not the same position as it is right now, even though this is hard to comprehend. U can however see the difference in velocity compared to earth. Which makes it possible to calculate approx where things are located at this time. Basically your not only measuring location but also time. Considering there's expansion of the universe the distance could be more then double that far.

  • @mrantero01

    @mrantero01

    The universe expands faster than light, and the expansion makes the wavelength of that distant light elongate to another frequency. That's why red shifting happens and that's why the oldest objects can only be seen in radio waves.

    I got my popcorn ready for reading all the comments from guys who believe their 15 second thought experiment is better than Einstein and thousands of other professional physicists that spent their entire life observing calculating and debating these concepts... 🍿

    @Robert w Einstein was a plagiarist and a fraud who always cowered from debate challenges by his scientific peers. That's common knowledge and pretty well documented. Ref. The Manufacture and Sale of Saint Einstein.

    The whole notion of a "thought experiment" is idiotic. In the Dark Ages, it was noticed that if you left a piece of meat on the table, overnight, maggots were crawling all over it. Many thought experiments were done. One emerged as dominant. That maggots popped into existence through the wonderful power of God's creation. He created everything in the beginning and continues to do so with maggots. Most nodded in agreement but a small few didn't buy it. They couldn't explain it but they didn't agree with the consensus opinion. BUT, someone actually did a real, scientific experiment. He put two pieces of meat on the table, one out in the open and one under s shot glass. Next morning, they found that the meat under the shot glass had no maggots on it. Conclusion, God didn't do it. Then it was finally realized that as they left the room, flies had congregated over the open piece of meat but none did so over the shot glass. So they put a jar over the maggot laden piece of meat and discovered that maggots were really eggs that the flies laid. So thought experiments are idiotic. REAL experiments get the job done. Theoretical physicists are a FRAUDULENT group who have great imaginations but have never advanced science in any way, shape or form.

    @@Ryan-lh1np NO, THEY IMAGINE THINGS AND TRY TO USE MATH AND MORE SPECULATION ABOUT EARLIER SPECULATION THAT BECAME FACT THROUGH REPETITION. THEY HAVE NEVER CONTRIBUTED ANYTHING TO THE UNDERSTANDING OF LIFE, THE UNIVERSE AND EVERYTHING. +++++++++++++++++++ Theoretical physics is a branch of physics that employs mathematical models and abstractions of physical objects and systems to rationalize, explain and predict natural phenomena. This is in contrast to experimental physics, which uses experimental tools to probe these phenomena. ++++++++++++++++++++

    I think this mass collaboration of resources is going to prove to be fruitful as time moves forward. LIGO and the optical lens looking at neutron stars will prove to show optical counterparts to gravitational waves. It’s exciting and refreshing to have a class full of sponges absorbing all of this wonderful material.

    This could've been started at EXACTLY the 43:00 mark and been more relatable to the mass audience. I know this wasn't created for that, but the iceberg analogy slide followed by the discussion of the increase of dark energy as the size of the universe enlarges were the most concise and informative bits of his talk.

    I came to the comment sessions because I enjoyed a Physicist mentioning Steph and wanted to see if someone else was fascinated by that as well. Then saw that, like me, there were a bunch of folks who got to this video while asleep. Good job YT. But then, decided to taste my luck and read further and saw the idiots commenting and got depressed. Regardless, cool lecture.
