I was wondering how to use all the new-ish stuff in my Pro Tools, and Google brought me here. I was happy to see one of my favorite teachers! I will be digging through your vids for more Pro Tools wisdom. Thanks!

I just stumbled upon your channel I’m loving the videos… very informative! Quick question… is there a shortcut in ProTools to move multiple faders at once without creating a group?

Hello Musictron, like a "Temp Group"? for track volume, pan, etc.? no there is not... yet, but I'm fairly certain a "Temp Group" function is on the feature request To Do list at Avid. However, for many things there is a similar function... "Do to Selected". Selecting an input, output, instanciating a plugin, creating/assignment sends, muting, soloing, automation modes across a group of tracks. Select the tracks (highlighted track name) that you want to include. Hold Shift + Option Mac or Shift + Alt Windows and then do the thing you want to do on any one of the selected tracks. I have a video on that... Do to Selected. kzread.info/dash/bejne/lq6TtLqmd7rWesY.html

Perhaps I’m thinking incorrectly regarding my routing need for my sub working with L-R main and the same sub working with Alt L-R as it seems complex to set up every PTs session via 5.1 template utilizing this type of I/o Perhaps you can enlighten me Running a single genelec 7050c Currently I am 2.1 using a set of L-R mains 8030c I would like to bring in Yamaha or Focals as L-R alt So technically no surround Would you use the 5.1 I/o as shown for monitor management giving up the interface outs Or is there a hardware solution to switch signal between the sets while maintaining level control over each set and the sub The Question: 2 sets of switchable monitors sharing the one Genny 7050c sub?

When I move my puck around on the dolby binaural panner 7.1.2, sometimes the audio disappears (it happened to you as you moved around the panner as you said you'd no speakers). Is this a routing issue do you think? or is this normal? I'd have thought that using binaural would not necessitate speakers and therefore I could hear everything. I'm using the 7.1.2 bed and the objects too. Many thanks. Love your channel.

I think what you're trying to say is why did we see visual output from each of the channels on the 5.1 track but only heard audio on the LC channels?

Hi. He didnt hear any audio when he panned to the surrounds because he simply didnt have any speakers hooked up to his interface as he mentions in the video. As far as your issue and im going to assume youre using the atmos renderer getting fed from pro tools. Youll see monitoring options toward the top left of the renderer (i think the default is 'physical'). Just like in this video, youd need to have the available speakers hooked up to hear when your panning to surrounds, center, ceiling channels etc. Also Binaural is only heard through headphones FYI. If your main objective is to do an atmos mix in headphones, go to preferences in the renderer and under the 'driver' tab make sure to enable 'headphones only mode'. Then head over to the headphones tab and make sure the "binarual' setting is checked. Now youll be able to hear the surrounds, center channel, Height channels etc. that were disappearing before. hope that helps

Hello, thanks and sorry for the late reply... yes, I would say you're seeing a routing problem if when you pan around with the surround panner you don't hear audio from one or more speaker locations. Is the missing audio on ceiling speakers or front or surround speakers? Is this happening with audio going to the Bed bus path and/or with audio routed out an Object? My first guess without seeing your set up is that perhaps the Dolby Render is setup as a 9.1.4 speaker system? and Pro Tools is setup as 7.1.4? Jon

Can 5.1 mix be done on stereo system Sir with just 2 monitors L & R ? If yes, how? Later I have the option to preview it on 5.1 stereo system. Please reply

You can do exactly what hes doing in this video. Meaning you can setup a 5.1 output but if all you have is a 2 monitors (L+R) then you just wont be able to hear anything you put in the center or surround channels. You could theoretically do it but it would be a pain Youd have to guess at what level you putting stuff in the surrounds and center channel and then check it later on the 5.1 system then go back to pro tools and make adjustments. so in theory yes but it might be impractical. Id give it a shot though

Thank you! You created at SMPT output 5.1, but all your metering once you got started reverted to Film. Your master is showing LCR, not LRCLFELSRS -- your output meter on top doesn't match the master fader meter... is that normal?

Yes, you are correct and yes, this is a confusing "function" in Pro Tools, for sure. Technically, Pro Tools operates in "Film" mode (L,C,R,Ls,Rs,Lfe) under the hood. You can re-arrange the output path(s) to be SMPTE (L,R,C,Lfe,Ls,Rs) or what ever format you want but the format internally within Pro Tools does not appear to follow that change, as you've pointed out. So, unfortunately the Output metering at the top of the Pro Tools Edit Window as well as the path layout in the Pro Tools IO Setup window/Bus tab will show Film format regardless of the format configured in the IO Setup/Output tab. Jon
