About 50 years ago, Karatekas and Thai boxers used to fight each other all the time in Asia and it was basically 50-50. Many people seen to think that Karate doesn't work as a foundation in kickboxing, while Muay Thai works, because many karate schools have been watered down over the years and turned into businesses. But just take a look at guys like Wonderboy Thompson, Raymond Daniels or Michael Page. Real Karatekas are actual killers in kickboxing

@@alexramon9679 i mean, you guys do have a point. The thing is that classic Karate masters had a superior workout to most styles, this allowed them to hurt you with moves that would usually tickle (lol). They also trained in weapons, used takedowns, and joint locks. Karate was decent, and i personally think that it can work in kickboxing if you are agresive enough (being pasive will result in you getting owned by the kickboxer/thai fighter)

One thing I love about Jeff’s videos . Is the fact that he does absolutely ZERO peacocking or posturing. He’s always humble and shows footage that highlights BOTH fighters abilities and success . Jeff doesn’t make it a highlight reel of himself. As someone that has competed and trained themselves, when you enter a gym egos are left at the door. Anyone who steps on that Mat with you is your brother and teammate, you’re there to help each other achieve goals. Jeff is a great ambassador for the sport and the gym culture that IMO is the correct gym gym culture.

First time watching this and I can already respect your content. I can watch more comparisons like this all day. It's nice hearing fighters commenting on their fights and training sessions vs commentators or fighting fans talking about the details of the engagements because the technical facts of the momentary situation are lost. Fighters expose the details rather than commentating for fans which is better for viewer ratings but unhelpful when understanding what went wrong or right for the fighter in the moment. This is one of the best videos I have seen in a long while. Keep up the amazing work!

Really enjoyed this sparring. One of the best i've seen from someone doing karate to be honest. Rob's flexibility and control is really insane and a beauty to watch. Had to replay his kicks esp. the axe kick, spinning hook kick, and side kicks over a dozen times😂😂🤦‍♂The way he leans back still having the control while throwing the spinning hook kick is truly remarkable. I do throw good spinning hook kicks but I need to work on having more control considering the fact it seems we'll be within the same height range. He also has good footwork for a karate dude, surprisingly not being so flat-footed. I noticed he has a pattern though which Jeff didn't exploit. Whenever he closes distance and he misses throwing a jab or front/side kick, what always comes next is definitely the spinning back kick which makes sense actually bcuz it should be the least counter an opponent should be expecting. He reminds me a bit of a well known iranian kungfu fighter, who often knocked out opponents that threw spinning hook kicks with his own spinning hook kicks with impeccable timing, and angle.

This was one of the most engrossing sparring sessions I've ever seen! I'm a life long TSD guy w/a few years of TKD, and seeing y'alls different flavors with kicking is especially wonderful. Credits all around, but I gotta say that Robbie's side kicks are on fire, and that axe kick was bonkers. Great stuff, this was really fun.

I loved this! For perspective I'm nearly 59 years old and I've had an interest or curiosity in MA beginning with Harold Watanabe, a USMC judo instructor, better known as Tojo Yamamoto, a wresting heel in the southeast. The "Kung Fu" TV series solidified my interest. I've seen the irrationality in the way MA was displayed in karate and Chinese MA magazines. The opponent almost always attacks in the same style represented in the article and most of the techniques are performed at a distance in which a block isn't needed. As mentioned by another commenter there is a plethora of YT videos in which the prime motivation is apparently to make the cocky owner of the video look great while he shows a lack of common curtesy in his manner and his words. This is a breath of fresh air! Here is martial artist who chooses to make encounters with a variety of styles, presents honestly with humility, showing respect and appreciation for his guest and their style. In doing this it is apparent Mr. Chan chooses to respect the viewer as well.

Great demonstration of many things, and what a privilege to spar with Robbie Lavoi! With an imbalance in reach I expected to see a lot of distance management, in and out, but I certainly didn't expect so many of the fast inside strikes to be high kicks. One never knows what you will come up against! Thank you both for the video.

I think that part of it is that most people who do martial arts grow up doing judo or karate as their martial art. If you did some grappling with high level judokas and did more sparring videos with high level karate guys, I think you could get tons of views as these arts don’t get a whole lot of love in MMA compared to other martial arts. Good luck!
