Private Garage Tour of Gordon Murray's new Car Cave
Автокөліктер мен көлік құралдары
Private garage tour of Gordon Murray's new Car Cave. Following on from his resto-mod Ford Escort Mk1, Jonny takes a whistle stop tour of Gordon Murray's new basement Car Cave. Each of the 35-odd race and road cars are there for a specific reason, with many following Gordon's preferred design principles of being small, simple and lightweight.
Thanks for stopping by The Late Brake Show.
From the rivetted Mini-based kit car to McLaren SLR, listening to Gordon wax lyrical about the colourful machines in his dehumidified depths of GMA is nothing but pure car fanaticism.

Probably because with Jonny he can just fully 'geek-out' about the engineering of each car, the details that attracted him to it, reasons behind his design choices with his own creations, etc and not get blank stares in return. :) Imagine trying to explain to some non-motoring enthusiast why the original 84 hp Lotus Seven is so much better to commute to work in than the latest BMW 3 series with close to 2 tonnes of heated and cooled seats, apple carplay/android auto, lane keep assist, adaptive cruise control, AEB, intrusive traction control and stability control, muted exhaust, -by-wire everything, laggy emissions control throttle inputs, auto gearbox, airbags, etc, etc. If you mention weight penalties, view obstructing pillars, economy 'tech', driver failsafes, etc, they'll think you're listing positives, as all they're interested in is being able to legally text and drive with the tech to stop them crashing when distracted or not checking blindspots (created by the pillars designed to prevent them being crushed if the car is upside down). Try to tell them you can replace all that yourself to prevent reaching the stage of needing all of that safety stuff with paying attention properly, for fast road driving, applying IAM, RoSPA and/or Roadcraft (all sort of the same thing really) 'advanced' driving techniques to make the maximum safe progress (this training is what enabled the police to safely do 160 mph when conditions enable it, it's not about 'the shuffle' as is commonly misunderstood when police advanced driving is talked about), and they'll ask why add so much more to the labour of commuting.
You're getting the guests you deserve Jonny, well done mate.

It is Gordon's amazing laidback enthusiasm and passion for lightweight engineering from a bygone era, that really projects something special to all us fans of innovative vehicles like this. Everyone should aspire to keep that type of detailed enthusiasm, even when they are in the mid seventies, because he shows how to stay young. Absolute passionate legend right there. Thank you Jonny for a fantabulous insight into Mr Murray's car cave.

In motorsport he is very influential, but I just do not think he has had a significant impact on road cars. Sure, the F1 was great, but I don't think that any of Murray's engineering has transitioned to everyday road cars. In fact, everyday road cars have followed a long-term trend to get heavier and bigger, which is exactly the opposite of what Murray espouses. I'm happy for someone to put me right on his impact on the everyday road car though.
I’m actually at Gordon Murray’s new factory today ! We are in the process of building it Got two T50’s here ! Look absolutely stunning ❤

I knew what modern cars Gordon Murray drove and that they were all unique and as close to his standard as possible. I always wondered what classic cars he had, if any. Getting to see this was a lovely treat and I love the fact that it was with you, Jonny. The moment where one tall Honda Sx00 owner told the other what it took to fit in one was very special. A huge thanks to Mr Murray for allowing students to see this amazing collection. I hope in a few years time it will lead to a return of the small, light and nimble machines of yore.

Wow Jonny. What a feather in your cap! Hanging out with Gordon. Lots of long time Maclaren fans around here, so delighted to hear the wisdom and method of it all. Finally understand the essential lightness of the M F1. Who knew big men could fit in a Lotus 7? The Caterhams and things nowadays have been stretched a bit, will have to compare the sizes properly. Most agree the weight of recent autos is out of control. Even new Minis are tanks now. I know, safety standards, quiet, comfort, etc. In a Merc S class sure, why not. In a real sports car? Forget it. Will have to keep buying older, lighter, low cg cars. Thanks again.

It's not just the genius of Gordon its the fact that he's humble and like one of us he could go out and buy the most expensive cars but he chooses to buy the things that he loves the design of and he's interested in and has the passion which is amazing. The fact that he was so obsessed with the weight and history of the cars is just sublime where most people would just be put up the power figures everywhere to try and impress people. Even, the motorbikes are interesting. It's basically a car gallery can actually move👏

Gordon is a truly fascinating guy. I listened to the Podcast you had him on and the story of him coming to England and all that followed was captivating. I really wish the more mainstream car manufacturers shared Gordon's outlook on what a car should be so that the working classes can have drivers cars to aspire to that are more than just power.
Jonny every video only confirms TLBS is by far the best motoring video on YT. Round of applause again.
Gordon is the shining diamond that the rest of the industry has used as a guiding light. This interview only further confirms that position. Long live the King.
I find it an intriguing paradox that the main bulk of Gordons Car collection consists of cars that are small, minimalist with powerplants that make at best 250 bhp with many under 100. Packaging and engineering purity is the key to true driving involvement and enjoyment not just pure speed. Whilst the T.50 and T.33 are amazing pieces of modern HyperCar engineering, a big part of me wishes Gordon could devote his energy in to creating a modern everyman simple sports car for the modern era - reflecting the passion he has for such cars. Something like the IgmF750 powered by a 3 cylinder Toyota Aygo powerplant would be brilliant! Keep badgering him Johnny to build some more! 🙂👍👍.

What a collection. IGM has forgotten more than I could ever remember! The Brabham F1 car takes me back to my childhood and racing my Dad at Scalextric. I had the BT42 (?), competing against a Tyrrell. My car would easily fly-off the track, whereas my Dad's wouldn't. Only as an adult did I learn why... the Tyrrell had lead weights inside the chassis - my Dad has modified it to beat the 7 year old me!
