Prioritizing Night Fighting Tools Based On Budget
Night vision and thermal devices are valuable for preparedness & expensive. If you are starting out with night fighting tools, this is what I would prioritize.
Night vision and thermal optical devices are becoming more common throughout the civilian preparedness community, international organized forces and criminal elements. Understanding that this technology will be used against you in any kinetic type SHTF scenario can demonstrate the benefit of owning this equipment yourself. But it is, very expensive. So if you are on a budget and looking to enter the night fighting game, I hope this video helped you prioritize what to acquire first while explaining the pros and cons of each device.
If you are interested in taking the leap for top tier night vision capabilities, check out Nightline-Inc°com and mention "Magic Prepper" to get 15% off which is a huge discount on these very expensive devices.

Great video. However there is a greater cheaper way I found. If you take a digital camera and mount it then take a nice IR spotlight. You will see in the dark. You can have a whole area with IR coverage and just have security cameras. Also I plan to use Cable as trip and fall hazard. Your area is safe the problems exist when you need supplies. I will have so many counters to many plans. My ultimate goal is to bike my trailer to a Skyscraper Penthouse.

Great video, but I would like to add a few things that I think are important based on my own experience and research into this topic. First of all, yes, good quality night vision equipment is very expensive, as was mentioned in the video. There are cheaper alternatives out there for everything, but the budget options are usually priced that way for a reason. Nothing beats the quality of the more expensive gear. With that said, I agree that a PVS-14 is a very important piece of equipment. It's not something that everyone can afford, but it's worth the investment in my opinion. However, something that this video leaves out is that there are helmet mounted thermal monoculars that are often paired together with the PVS-14. It's a popular setup that has the best of both worlds. I haven't used this myself, but I've heard great things about pairing a PVS-14 with an InfiRay Outdoor MH25 V2 640X512 25mm Thermal Monocular. Another popular option is the Flir Breech, but I heard that the image quality isn't as good on that one. Lastly, I strongly recommend putting an IR laser on your rifle to use together with the PVS-14. The civilian laser market isn't very good and that is a lengthy topic of discussion in and of itself, but the general consensus is that there are only a few legitimately good quality options out there for civilians due to some dumb FDA laws. I recommend getting the Designate IR-V dual beam VSCEL laser from U.S. Night Vision. It's probably the best overall package in the civilian laser category in terms of form factor, price, and quality. Another popular option would be the Steiner D-BAL D2, but it's massive in terms of size. And if you don't mind spending a ton of money, the B.E. Meyers Mawl or the Wilcox Raid XE are perhaps the best overall civilian options currently on the market. Of course, there's also the option of getting a military grade laser on the gray market, but that comes with its own set of issues. In any case, this is a long topic that deserves to be discussed more in depth. I recommend everyone to do their own research. There are great channels here on KZread that are dedicated to this stuff, like Hop and others. So, if this is something you're interested in, go watch what they have to say about it. I hope this comment was helpful.

Great suggestion to use dual tube with IR and thermal combined on each eye, however MAKE SURE you are able to test this setup out. There are reports of some people that have not be able to make this work for them. Other people said they got it to work for them really well with no effort. So I have to toss out a fair warning to anyone looking at this option. You have to be able to test the NV and thermal tubes together on a helmet before you get them, or at least make certain whomever you buy them from has a good return policy on the items you get as you may not be able to make this setup work for you. I'm looking forward to a future where you have NV systems with thermal overlay capabilities to combine the ability to see at night (with no digital delay/ghosting) but also the threat detection that thermal provides. I have been looking for a video, but haven't been able to find it. There is another channel that showed the differences between NV and thermal by having a guy hide in the tall grass of a field and have an observer attempt to locate him with both NV and thermal. Full scanning with NV he kinda gives up after about 60 seconds, with the thermal he didn't even have to look, he just spotted the guy hiding in the field instantly. Doesn't mean NV is bad, it definitely has some advantages over thermal, but thermal is unmatched when it comes to threat detection.

I have an ATN X Sight that is about 7 to 9 years old. I'm sure technology has improved a great deal. Without the illuminator turned on, you can see things with partial moonlight. Not great, but you can detect stuff. Using their independent IR illuminator, I've shot pigs at 200 yards. The illuminators in the 940 spectrum on this and similar devices does emit a faint red glow that humans can see. The 840 spectrum is supposed to be much harder to see, but it doesn't illuminate nearly as far with digital night vision. You can quickly spot most game animals due to their eye shine at night w the illuminator. If you need to hunt game, using one of these and a suppressed 22 LR and subsonics, you'd be virtually undetectable. The ATN also works during the day, which is nice. IMO, an under appreciated feature of these scopes is their bullet drop calculation ability. If you have time to range a target, using the calculator greatly improves your odds of a hit with rounds that have rainbow shaped trajectories, especially subsonice rounds. For example, there is a huge drop from a 50 yard zero when shooting at 200 yards with a 200 grain, subsonic 300 Blackout round. The abilty to zoom in and take a picture or video is a nice feature as well. Say for example you wanted document a trespasser. Also, I like to take pictures of nice bucks that I have passed on. Due to the faintly visible red light, I don't think these devices are ideal for night fighting in most cases. But if that is all you have, be sure and figure in that if someone looks your way and you have your illumintor on, they will probably notice you.

Pvs14 is the best entry level option. The Nocturn Industries Tanto is also an option because if you buy a second one you can remove the battery housing on each of them and put an articulating bridge that connects them. It makes a true articulating set of dual tubes. If you have a bigger budget I'd go with the Katanas or DTNVS, both are great. For lasers, I would go for a DBAL D2. I often see something through the thermal and that then draws my attention with the night vision. For my eyes, the outdoor alert or white hot palettes work the best. I’ve tried arctic in heavy snow with some success, but white or black hot has generally been the best. There are several helmet mounted thermals out there, and some may be better than the Breach, but the Breach does capture images and does have a digital zoom that works. There are a lot of cheap options for IR lights (since a lot of night cameras use them), many of which are solar (so remote and self charging) and many with motion sensors. Being able to light up an area without being the source of the light - be it visible or IR. Obviously, if you are going to be "out and about" it takes better gear and more costs, but if you are dealing with a fixed position you can do a lot "on the cheap" so that even in a grid down situation you can flip a switch and have total visibility (of whatever type you are budgeted to) that makes the field visible without making you visible. Even if you are "out and about" it is well worth considering your light discipline and placements in regards to things like where you camp. A glow stick hanging at your camp is a big sign to the world where you are at. A glow stick hanging 30 yards downhill from where you dug in your bivy set up over a tarp or something that can look like a camp will put most nefarious interests clearly in your line of sight as they will draw in and sneak up on the light source (probably passing right by you in the process). High end gear is great if you have the coin for good stuff and the necessary structure needed to keep it running deep into an apoc. That said, you can easily be over geared (geared up for threats you either will not face or could not face). Having the NV necessary to go toe to toe with the current US military doesn't matter if you are in a scenario where you are matched against 30 such fellows when you are alone or in a group of 3. Having that same NV isn't going to be too necessary against your average group of desperate and dangerous scavengers who will rely on numbers during the day, since they won't have the resources even for normal lights at night. The solution? Find real world uses for it pre-apoc (like hunting).

The NVG 30 is really good to start and to be honest I probably won't upgrade NV maybe add thermal later if $ allows. It's lightweight, helmet mountable, usable with or without IR it's not going to outperform a PVS 14 but for about $450 with a usable mount I'm king of my fellow tactical pores in my area. 😆 If someone would make an upgraded lens to widen the field of view from 40* it would be even better.

I think I'm gunna work on bridging a single tube NVG and a single thermal tube, brass facts has a video on it. I'd personally get a cheaper 1 at first but I wouldn't necessarily climb this whole tier hierarchy.... get something cheap or mid tier (not both) and then buy the good stuff 1 by 1 until u have ur set up.... save money in the long run, the money u would spend on each tier can be used towards the good stuff

I have seen some of the cheap ones like that first unit you showed where the battery is built in. There is no access to the built in battery and when it cycles its lifetime of recharges you have a paper weight. If they had a way to remove the battery and own several batteries and have all of them charged and just swap them out it would be much better. I would rather have one I had to feed diposable batteries to than one with a rechargeable no access battery stuck in it.

I will be getting a monocular very soon but I doubt I’ll even be able to get the thermal monocular @ $500. Maybe u could do some give aways, start with a $1 entry that puts one in a drawing for the $100NV. Then $100 entry puts one in a drawing of a small group that covers the cost of the PVS14. Just a suggestion, I wouldn’t be putting anything in but maybe $1-$5 giveaway bracket

I live by my PTR-9c and have had an Invisible Sight IS-EG (EEL laser) for some time now. With that, I had to pick up a Holosun DRS-NV and the two are inseperable on the gun. For the while light addition and upgrade, I may look deeper into the GL4-Pro laser which is all of the NGAL plus the white light in an even more compact package. With the pre-welded pic rail on the PTR-9c, I don't worry at all about the DRS-NV unit keeping it's zero or even coming off. It's kinda' heavy. Do I have NODS? Now I got Holoson rail mounted. Had to turn in my PVS-7's when I got out of the Corps. Semper Fi.🇺🇲

I think they offer a lot of versatility and provide you with options. But as you stated, they aren't great for mobility. So unless you were specifically using them for night shooting activities (like hog hunting), I'd personally rather save a little more and get into the PVS-14 territory beforehand. But that's just my thought process. You might have a specific use case that makes sense to do the opposite.
