If the West provides Ukraine with support to win the war, this victory will secure peace not only for Ukraine but for the whole of Europe. A pre-election discussion with representatives from three main political parties. Support Ukraine looks forward to a night of captivating conversation about what’s needed for a Ukrainian victory. The panel will be quizzed by the host of the Silicon Curtain podcast Jonathan Fink. He’ll be joined by Edward Lucas, Paul Mason and Macer Gifford.
----------
Welcome to the pre-election debate. The election outcome may seem to be broadly predictable, but what will Day one for the new UK government look like? How prominent will Ukraine be in the priority list of a new cabinet? Will there be a continuation of foreign policy, and will it be aligned behind a Ukrainian victory - not simply the vaguely worded and non-committal phrase “as long as it takes”. The devil will be on the detail, ranging from issue such as rearming Britain for a dangerous world to our commitment to international law and cracking down on the laundering of oligarch money and finding our place in a fracturing global economy. But tonight, we will be discussing whether the war in Ukraine, which was initiated by Russia, should be at the top of the list. The longer it drags on, the higher the cost for Ukraine in human and economic terms, and the more malign and toxic Russia seem to be becoming. Despite Escalation management, prolonging the war seems to be compounding risks of a wider conflagration, rather than mitigating risk. We desperately need leadership to resolve the war, and align around a Ukrainian victory, but will we get it through the result of this election?
----------
Edward Lucas was one of the first journalists to raise the alarm about Putin’s actions and motivations. While most of the world still thought of Putin as ‘someone we could do business with’, Edward published a prescient and insightful book in 2008 called “The New Cold War - Putin’s threat to Russia and the West”. Edward Lucas is now a full-time Liberal Democrat is a Prospective candidate for the Cities of London and Westminster constituency, on a platform that includes defending democracy against dirty money and corruption.
----------
Paul Mason is a British commentator and radio personality. He was Culture and Digital Editor of Channel 4 News, becoming the programme's Economics Editor in 2014. He is the author of several books, and a visiting professor at the University of Wolverhampton. Allegedly Mason was a member of the Workers' Power group, as a Leftie activist, but he now explains that “What his politics are is very complicated.” Mason was considered as a candidate by the Labour Party to run in the constituency of Islington North at this election but was not selected for the final shortlist.
----------
Macer Gifford is a British veteran of the Ukrainian Army - who is well known to members of NAFO (North Atlantic Fellas Organization), and those who follow the Ukraine war in detail. As he says on his Twitter profile, he is channelling the spirit of George Orwell, and his dispatches from the frontlines of the war in Ukraine have been highly engaging, informative, eloquent, and full of humanity. Macer has an MSc in Security & Diplomacy and has followed Conservative politics for many years.

I'm so glad I got to re-listen to it all more clearly, as my ears were ringing even louder than normal after leaving the tube station. It was great to see you, Jonathan. As good as this gathering was and how it should all be left to the experts, I just wish there was a way for us little people to, not so much brain storm ideas, but to take what there is and build upon it. Which kind of sounds like the same thing. LOL The thing is, when there's a gathering like this and peeps have their own opinions one's mind can be overwhelmed with ideas begotten from them and others. ;)

I wasn't surprised, but I was still disheartened that the word Ukraine did not appear once in any of the election flyers that came through my letterbox this week. Nor for that matter did the word defense.

1:12:55 That was a completely wrong conclusion, a total misconception of everything about Muscovy. Denying the liberation of numerous subjugated nations and rejecting the partition of Muscovy into smaller, manageable national states makes its nuclear disarmament unachievable, and without it any long lasting peace in Europe becomes absolutely impossible even in theory.

There were differences of opinion among the panel on this one. Three of us firmly for the idea of Russia being broken up into small states being a good outcome.

Totally agree - like other historical empires, the Muscovian Empire must be broken up, or at least, the independence movements in all the nations currently occupied by Muscovians encouraged. Although it is far too expensive for us to achieve alone, "The West" can easily afford to give concessions on reparations to each of those states as they splinter off, and in the course of that, giving greater discounts the further they distance themselves from the whole idea of a "Greater Russia", so that for example: Agreeing to the principle of them becoming liable for their fair share of the reparations owed to Ukraine, before any "Western" subsidy. Cooperating with the investigation into identifying and tracking down war criminals so that they can be extradited and prosecuted (and hopefully, if the newly independent state is well-behaved enough, allowing sentences to be served locally). Locating and freeing the kidnapped Ukrainian children so that they can be deprogrammed and returned, or showing that they have made every reasonable effort to find all such victims without result. Anything else, particularly items identified as needing attention by Ukraine, but open to other suggestions as well. Surrendering of any nuclear arms on the territory of the new or restored nation. Would all give faster acceptance by the community of nations and recognition. Ending of sanctions - slowly and in proportion to their acceptance of and cooperation with the above principles. They would earn trust, which is vital to securing trade deals, financial links, and all the other benefits of being part of the community of civilised nations instead of opposing that community. But above all else - Nothing ABOUT Ukraine WITHOUT Ukraine, so they must have a veto on any of those subsidies and discounts. In particular, forgiveness is only theirs to offer, and "The West" should stay the hell out of the way. 🇺🇦Slava Ukraini!🇺🇦🇬🇧

I now realise that the French election is far more interesting and relevant, because France is a very important voice in the EU. Why do the British still think their politics is interesting for international audience?

Not sure about this question? It seems to be off point. The point is support for Ukraine and specifically what more can Britain do to increase its support and how to bring this about? I suggest watching the Q &A session in separate footage. The questions make clear this us not about UK politics but about questioning the level of support for Ukraine. Hope this helps.
