Jose Rodriguez has a fantastic KZread channel on nothing but printing. If you are not subscribed to that you should be. He has brought some other things to my attention in the comments and now has a great video on "CANON PRO 1000 Maintenance Procedures you should perform regularly!".
Highly recommended.

    Fwiw. I have owned and heavily used a Prograff 1000 for the past four years. It has been completely reliable and produces stunning prints. I have never had a misfeed which was a constant problem on my previous Epson. Fabulous printer. Absolutely love it. And, my go to paper is Red River baryta. Magical combo. Cheers, Mark

Hearing all this information sold me on changing my Epson D700 drylab to this bad boy right here, not only because of the 17" paper width option, but also the possibility of using all this fancy paper options. What an excellent show, I learned so much about a subject I know very little about yet really ought to. At the point in my photography where printing my own work is becoming a priority but with many of the preconceived doubts you mention that hard stopping me making the leap of faith! However, I now see printing my own work as a real option. After watching many shows on the Pro 1000 and the Epson P800 reviews and now watching your in-depth video with all these experts I’m on a self printing mission mission. Thanks so much, a lot of hard work by you 👏

    What a fabulous interview and review. I was reluctant to spend 1.5hrs watching, but am so glad I didn't skip any of it. I learnt so much about features that I didn't even know it had, like the index pattern feature to do colour corrections in Print Studio Pro. I also learnt where the two new Ilford ICC profiles went! Finally I can access them. I agree that Canon really needs to be a little more transparent when it comes to spruiking their features and manuals. Thanks again.

    Had never run acrosss you or your content before--Wow! So full of useful, practical, actionable info. Really loved the interview with Drew Hendrix of Red River. Loved it so much in fact, that I paused the video, went to Red River's site, created an account, and bought a 25pc pack of the Baryta paper in 8-1/2x11 (along with some Canon ink and some clearance gloss paper!) to use on my Canon PRO-10. Can't wait to try it on some B&W images in the printing pipeline. Suggestion: Although I watch a number of videos that are 90min or so--it can be hard to watch in one setting, with family interruptions and all. Why not break them into numbered segments of 20-30min in a playlist? Then we could give you *multiple likes* instead of just one each ;) Keep this great content coming! Now I'm curious to see your other vids...

    Hey Will, Thanks so very much for watching. Means a lot. Please do follow up on how you like the Baryta? I love that paper. I completely get the time issue, and I have considered the multi-part idea. The main issue is that is that I release almost everything as a podcast too, in both audio only or video wherever you get podcasts. I release shows every 2 weeks, so breaking that feed into parts means this show would eat up 3 release dates. I could, I suppose, release in full in the feed but parts here, but that kind of penalizes the YT audience. Luckily, my usual shows are very different from this one. This was a special episode. Those are often about 45 min (although this summer they’ve all hit almost an hour because of the guests. Anyway, hope you also enjoy the normal shows, and thanks again!

    This review and interview has been priceless for us! We have decided against print lab partnerships due to cost and so few media choices in terms of paper choices. We still use a lab for acrylic and metallic prints for custom client requests. We have a Canon 100 but need to offer larger prints. Your KZread video 'nailed' it for us - a ProGraf 1000 is in the works!

    I have a Pro 100 now, and I use it for pro work. It does an excellent job. However, now that the Pandemic may be winding down I'm looking at a Pro 1000 when it will pay for itself. I don't have any problem printing on semigloss paper with the Pro 100. It does fine, especially with Canson and Hahnemuhle papers. Red River does well also. Actual mat papers don't so so well.

    Wow , Great review & interviews. I own the Pro 100 & up until recently have only printed on Canon papers. I just broke open a sample pack of CansonInfinity papers & tried 2 of the heavier papers & all I can say is WOW!!! I just a few days ago ordered 2 of RR Basic photography sample packs & 3 of their more advanced Photography sample packs to try out. Can't wait. I found with the Pro 100 paper feed on the heavier papers (Other Fine Art Paper option) , I had to (1.25" minimum border restriction by Canon) print with a bigger border & it took the paper with no problem from the rear paper feeder. I should retire in the next year or 2 & will probably move. After that I will get a larger printer as moving the Pro 1000 is a bit of a hassle. Great show. I got to go so I can order more ink, haha.

The one concern I had was how much ink came with the initial printer as I struggled to find that information elsewhere. Thank you for explaining that and I hope it’s the same 3 years later? (2023) In Australia! Are the printers still exactly the same now as they were a few year ago? I’ve heard mixed reviews on how often you need to print to stop them from clogging up… thoughts?

  • @BehindTheShot

    @BehindTheShot

    Жыл бұрын

    Hi Elouise, Thanks for watching, and no doubt you’ll love it. It’s a phenomenal printer. I can only speak to the U.S. market, but I don’t that would effect something like this. To my knowledge, yes, the ink in the box is the same today as back then. Most companies don’t change things like that often or without good reason. As well, the printer is exactly the same, with the exception of firmware updates. The question on how often to use it is the impossible one to answer. It won’t clog in the sense we think of. As I mentioned, this thing has many holes for the ink to counter that issue. But to minimize it, and to help with maintenance, I think once a week has been fine. Really, the person to answer that is a KZreadr name Jose Rodriguez. His channel is all about printing and he has tons of shows on this printer alone. youtube.com/@cheo1949

    Regarding gamut, I'd be very interested to learn about techniques to fully exploit the gamut of the inks & media. For example, for an image in sRGB, or even Adobe RGB, it's my understanding that printers such as this one can exceed the gamut of both these working spaces in some areas - are there methods to expand the image gamut during the printing process (at the expense of accuracy)?

  • @BehindTheShot

    @BehindTheShot

    4 жыл бұрын

    The key to your question, at least to my eye, is the phrase "in some areas". This printer can do AdobeRGB, but I am not sure about what colors, tones, or shades it could or would exceed that. Obviously each individual printer could also be a bit different and I am not sure you'd know unless you tested it. This is a beyond my abilities to answer unfortunately. If you reach out to the guy that commented below, @Jose Rodriguez, he might be a better source. His entire channel is dedicated to printing and I'd say he's the most knowledgeable person I know of on the subject. It's a great channel to subscribe to. If he answers I would love you to share the answer here too..

    Great video. I just bought a Canon Pro-1000 and I've been working to figure it out. I print for a living, and even I had difficulty figuring out media types, and how to use the Media Configuration tool. It wasn't obvious, but I think I have it now. You can actually go to the printer, under various settings, paper types and you can print a list of all the paper types on the LCD, and it will show you all the fine settings of each media type. For me as well though, even after registering custom paper types (am1X files) I cannot find them on the printer itself and there is no way to select them. What's unclear to me is whether or not the media type on the printer and the media type on the Canon Print Studio Pro software need to match, OR if the Canon Print Studio Pro settings override what's on the Printer's LCD. I've tested a ton of different papers on this now, and so far, hands down, the best best rag matte photo paper and profile combination is the Moab Entrada Bright White. The profile form Moab is great and is giving me very close color to the Epson P-5000 and Epson P-9000. The Hahnemuhle Photo Rag Bright White is also very good. I've also paid to have ICC profiles built for papers I use a lot for color proofing, like the Lexjet Semi-matte, and the Epson Semi-matte, and the Epson Enhanced Matte, and the Lexjet Archival Matte, and the colors are very good, and close to my Epson printers, although the Epson printers will always have a wider gamut in the greens, which definitely shows printing pure green (0,255,0) and slight variants. Hahnemuhle has done a great job of making profiles for the Canon Pro-1000, and has included am1X files to make figuring out the media type for each paper easier. The Hahnemuhle papers are gorgeous, and it's nice to see Hahnemuhle making an effort to build profiles for the Canon printers. This has been a very difficult printer to setup and profile properly compared to others, and I think you're right that Canon would greatly benefit from better documentation and help videos. Currently documentation is rather sparse and we're all left to watch videos like yours to figure it out.

  • @BehindTheShot

    @BehindTheShot

    Thanks for watching! You’ve hit many of points I had. The printer was actually “easy” to setup and get working, but overly complex to really take advantage of. Not because it actually is complex, which it really isn’t, but because the lack of good clear documentation means banging your head against wall a few times. But once you get it i love this printer. Good to know about the am1x from the other papers, that is still my fave feature. On the paper being installed and chosen on screen vs I’m Print Studio Pro , or any print driver choice on the computer, it actually does have an answer. If you make a choice on the computer it will take affect regardless of you’ve chosen that paper on the LCD. Another review post confused me at one point saying you must chose it on printer, and canon told me that’s wrong.

  • @BellevueFineArtRepro

    @BellevueFineArtRepro

    @@BehindTheShot This is an important distinction between how the Epson printers work and how the Canon printers work. Whether you print directly from Photoshop or from Canon Print Studio Pro, there is the option to choose the media type as well as the ICC profile, but on Epson machines the media type cannot be changed from the computer, only the ICC profile, so with Epson printers you must specify the media type on the machine itself. With Epson printers the media type wasn't as important on the 4900-9900 series, but with the new Surecolor series it's important. It's nice to see Canon doing this all on the computer. Thanks for the tip. You just saved me a lot of trips to the printer.

  • @BehindTheShot

    @BehindTheShot

    4 жыл бұрын

    Great question. You’ll get a different answer from everyone I think, because a paper’s color reproduction, ability to hold blacks, sheen / surface textures etc will all be subjective. If you’re talking only about real fine art archival type papers you see a lot of the same qualities in each manufacture. But there will be slight unique differences that will be subjective. One area I think the companies you mention excel is choice. They have a wider product line I think.

    Hi Steve, great in-depth video, but you should check out the latest firmware updates for the pro 1000, it's no longer a 17"x22" it's up to 17"x47" with the custom paper size settings, allowing you to print panoramas or multiple images on one (up to) 17"x47" sheet so what I will be doing is cutting whatever length I need from a 17inches roll. Also baryta paper is added with this firmware so it is a paper type option in both dialog box and printer control panel. Gary

    @@rfssport hi, personally I don't use a lot of canon paper because it's expensive for what it is but if it's on offer I would usually get some. I have found that the pro 1000 isn't paper fussy, professionals would probably disagree and I've even had reasonable quality images from some cheap epson paper but i mostly use for everyday printing of family stuff brilliant photo paper from WEX here in the UK or Marrutt paper which is available in the states but for panoramics so far I've only used ilford galerie 17" roll and just cut the size I need and even at 47" long it feeds ok just like sheet paper. Marrutt pro satin is close to canon pro luster but half the price here in the UK and it can be got in the states but I don't know what sort of price it is but as a comparison canon pro lustor A2 is £95 for 25 sheets and the Marrutt is (nearly half the price ) £56 for 25 sheets and £102 for 50 sheets 17" roll is £92 for 30m adout 98'. That's my humble opinion but try and get the hold of some paper samples and play about to see what suits your work and needs.

I’m sure someone out there has emptied the included cartridges to measure the amount in them, so I assume we’d know for sure if they were not. Thanks for watching! The Pro 100 does make excellent prints. It's the best value available at $500 retail. I've shown prints from mine in the top shows, I printed one of my images myself and sent the same file to Whitewall. My print was as good as the Whitewall print, or a liitle better. The only reason I'd like to get a Pro 1000 is to make larger prints.; I've been using Canson and Hahnemuehle paper, but I'm testing Red River and like it too. If you make a lot of large prints, printing yourself is considerably less expensive. Also, my Pro 100 will print shadows that are so dark that they can only be seen with an oblique light. Fantastic tonal gradation. That also speaks well of Canson paper.

  • @BehindTheShot

    @BehindTheShot

    Agreed on all points, except, to me, the 100 packs the three shadow detail produced by the 1000. That’s the biggest advantage to the 1000 for me. But the 100 produces amazing prints at such a great price point. Most people would see a difference, unless viewing critically side-by-side.

    Does the accounting manager take into consideration the initial cost of the printer itself? One would need to print a fairly high volume of prints before the per print price makes sense.

  • @BehindTheShot

    @BehindTheShot

    2 жыл бұрын

    Great question @QNetX. The answer is no. The accounting manager is measuring consumable per print cost. Including the original hardware cost wouldn’t make sense for software like that. First of all, it’s a moving target. With each print the cost of the printer itself is diluted, meaning it’s constantly changing. Most. Importantly, the printer isn’t considered “operation cost”. That’s hardware acquisition that you’d do a separate type of ROI on. For an analogy… You don’t include the cost of a car in calculating yearly operating expense. That would be fuel (like ink here), maintenance / repairs, etc. Hope that helps make sense of it.

  • @piccoloxl1

    Amazing review thanks. I'm going to get one this week. Two things I'd be keen to know. Approximately how many A2 colour (color 😎 ) prints do you think you could get from one set of inks say for example if you were printing a photograph that used roughly all the inks equally? I know this an unrealistic question as you might not always print one photograph using precisely the same of each colour ink. I just wanted a very rough idea. The second question is, considering the ink status shows 50% on first start up as the nozzles get primed, when the ink in the tanks runs out and you still have 50% in the tubes do you have to replace the cartridges, as presumably they will now be empty? Now I think about this question I guess the answer is yes but when you replace the the inks the tubes wont have to be filled and will now show 100%. But...... doesn't that mean that you will always be 50% down as you'll never be able to use the ink in the tubes if the tanks are empty???

  • @BehindTheShot

    @BehindTheShot

    Thanks for the feedback. As you guessed, these are tough questions to answer accurately. There are so many variables, how often you print, is the printer left off for extended periods, what you print etc. I have not used it enough for long enough to trust my results as definitive. I did find this post over at dpreview that seems to be pretty accurate. www.dpreview.com/forums/thread/4208996 The second question is interesting. The first tanks are used to prime the lines. Assuming you replace them before they are drained and the lines are emptied then yes, the subsequent tanks won’t start at a 50% reading. If however you left the drained ones then it should use what’s in the lines because the system is a vacuum, not gravity. But then the next set will be used to prime. That’s how I see it but a key point is that you’ll never use all ink in any printer. There will be residual in the system that can’t be retrieved.

    @@BehindTheShot thanks, I figured you might have used this pepper before, reason I asked. And yes, Epson is lock and key with their ICC settings for their paper, ICC's are only available for Epson printers, which makes no sense, it's not like these other manufacturers will just vanish, what they actually do is confuse many people who buy their printers thinking they should only use Epson paper "which is fine paper", most people are already confused in regards to printers and printing as it is, let's confuse them a bit more and in the long run anger them. All the reviews I seen on the exhibition fiber are from people with Epson printers. If you are trying to sell paper only for Epson printer users, that is not a smart business decision, but who am I to tell them otherwise. On their website this is what Epson says regarding their exhibition fiber paper. "Exhibition Fiber Paper is a breakthrough paper, designed exclusively for use with Epson's UltraChrome K3 ink". It surely looks fine to me with Canon ink. Not that I don't like Epson printers and ink, I previous printer was an Epson, the P600 which had nozzle issues "maybe it was just my copy", but I wanted to print bigger, and Canon was the only one that does 17x22 prints for a table printer before going for the bigger crate size printers.

    Hi Shiva, That is a great question, and yes... I actually still love this thing. Fast, accurate, and pretty flexible. That said, it's not cheap from an ink point of view. I calibrate my monitors monthly usually. I say usually because during the last year I have shot a lot less, so I haven't worried about it as much. And yes, the iMac has never been an easy one. I have an NEC PA272W that I love. I calibrate both that and the 5k 27" iMac and try to get the iMac to match the NEC (which I trust the most). Calibration can't easily adjust brightness on the iMac - that is manual. You are spot on though, calibration matters so very much if you intend to print, and I'd argue no matter what your output is.

    Thank you for your response earlier. I have 2 or 3 questions about the Pro-1000 and would like to hear your feedback since you've had it for 3 years now. I am a non-professional enthusiast. In 2005, I had a Canon ip6600D, and in 2011, an Epson R2000, an A3+ printer without a matte/glossy ink switch like the Canons. I have a certain level of expertise in printing, but my R2000 has a stubborn head with reds and yellows, and while trying to remove it to clean it, I broke a ribbon in the head. I could repair it by taking it all apart, but that won't solve the head problems and the internal tank filled with used ink. So, I am seriously considering purchasing an A2 printer (I have been frustrated at times by the A3) and I am torn between the Pro-1000 and the SC-P900. Have you had any problems with nozzle or head clogging during these 3 years? Have you had any issues with smudging that can occur with borderless prints or other issues? Does it seem appropriate to print a nozzle check or test print page every 2 days to reduce excessive maintenance consumption of the Pro-1000, or is the cost per year minimal compared to the yearly printing costs? I have a probe to calibrate my paper, but the Pro-1000 has an automatic calibration that seems to work great. Can you tell me more about it? My R2000 is 62 cm wide, the P900 is 51 cm wide, and the Pro-1000 is 72 cm wide. This is a big issue for me now and is making me hesitate because the 2 printers seem very similar, although I give a big advantage to the Pro-1000 because of the calibration

  • @BehindTheShot

    @BehindTheShot

    Жыл бұрын

    My pleasure. Those issues sound like what would make me stop printing. Hahaha. First, I don’t print as much as I’d hoped or should. So my 1000 is off for long periods, unfortunately. That causes an issue known to the 1000 where on boot it goes through a VERY long, and VERY ink consuming process. Even with that I’ve never had a nozzle, head, or smudge issue. I don’t think I’d print a test page that often to try to prevent waste on maintenance. If that’s the goal just do an actual print every few days. The cycles can be expensive, as the ink isn’t cheap, but - to me - that’s the cost of owning a nice printer. Would I rather own it and not deal with that? Of course, but the printer is what it is. The other questions I’m not the best one to ask. I’d suggest following the Jose Rodriguez Photo Printing Techie channel and maybe asking him. He’s the smartest guy I’ve found on printers, and has tested multiple models and brands. youtube.com/@cheo1949

It was based on my experience with two previous less expensive Canon printers, and on the general act of printing which I’d why I had Red River talk about paper and Canon discuss this level of printer. In other words it’s a review based on my experience being new to this level of device. Jose, who runs the definitive channel on everything printing is much more in depth than I can get. Fantastic review. One area I’d appreciate as part of a review is a discussion on the needed frequency of operation to avoid/reduce clogged nozzles. It is my understanding printers like this must be use to print color images about twice a week. If you leave for a month and come back, it will require running a number of cleaning cycles to restore normal operation; unless you have someone print in your absence. Running cleaning cycles use significant amounts of ink. For me, I still might be willing to take the leap, but it is the kind of thing that would make me think carefully. It ups the level of commitment, especially for hobbyist who don’t have commercial workflow, to keep the printer busy enough to avoid these challenges.

  • @BehindTheShot

    Thanks for watching, Greg. You are correct. Left unused for a short period of time this printer will require cleaning cycles in boot. Those eat a good deal of ink. I wasn’t aware of that when I made this video, because the printer was new - having been sent to me by Canon for this show. Now, however, I am. Does that change my opinion of the Pro 1000? Not for me. I don’t print often, and when I do it does it’s thing. It raises the total cost of ownership, yes, but it’s a beautiful printer all around.

    Steve, I actually came back to listen to Jim, but he didn't mention what I was listening for. Please confirm my thinking here if you can: 1) Are the imagePROGRAF PRO-1000, 2000 & 4000 all considered to be "digital printers"? 2) They all can receive RGB files well, but ARE actually CMYK printers, right? 3) If they are (or are not) are they also considered to be 'expanded' CMYK printer with red & blue in order to print the wider (Adobe?) RGB gamut? I ask because I'm curious at the programming level if the AI of the printer is doing any color translating and if so, where and how many times. I know that La*b* is the device-independent Profile Connection Space through which all color space conversions go through, so in the spirit of reducing the amount device decisions, I'm tempted to send files with La*b* embedded so as to reduce the amount of conversions. Lastly, 4) Am I correct in describing RIPs as really good print drivers that, don't do any 'color space' conversions, but actually translate the entire gamut of a specific image into the actual specific inks that the printer in question uses?

    Here are the answers from Canon: 1. Yes they are digital printers 2. Correct, almost all printers on the market would be CMYK printers that convert to RGB 3. Note he clearly disclaims that it's been awhile, but here is what he said. Thanks again. "It's been a long time since I've had to consider this stuff. May be rusty, but I'll give you what I recall after some quick refreshing with the help of Google. I think of print drivers as residing on the computer and packaging up print commands and data. Nothing more. No conversions, no interpretations, none of the hard work. I think of RIPs as residing within the printing system (sometimes as dedicated computers attached to the imaging hardware) and interpreting those commands and data to fit the color space possible with the output device. I think of gamut as the possible colors within a given system (color space and output device). A photo, as a digital file, has a color space, but no gamut until it is displayed on an output device (monitor, print). The RIP will take the instructions and data packaged by the printer driver and interpret the raw color information plus any requested color space (re)assignments, and fits that into the output device’s gamut. If you remember Pantone spot color-to-CMYK conversion swatch books, it's like that. That means that the RIP will take AdobeRGB data, for example, and use its internal color data tables to fit the incoming color data into SWOP CMYK or Hexachrome (CMYKOG) or whatever the printer can do. In that sense, I would say that a RIP does do color space conversion (AdobeRGB to SWOP CMYK)."

    That's a great question. Most printers do suffer affects from long periods without use, which is why printers agitate the ink tanks when powering on. I agree fully that at the end of the printer life, at least for one owner, there will be lost ink. I never said that’s a good thing. It’s not, but it simply doesn’t bother that much. First of all I don’t know exactly how it works and how much is left behind. Second, the cost of that ink is spread of my life of actual use of the printer and for me it’s deductible. Again, don’t interpret that as I like it, I most certainly do not, but I doubt any printer uses every drop of ink. I don’t know that for sure, I’m also not interested in studying it. But assuming no device drains completely then all devices have waste. Maybe this one more than others. That’s important, yes. I don’t know how many prints obviously.because I don’t know precisely how much ink there really is.

    A R Let me try to clarify... I’m am not an engineer and I can’t specify when the printer stops and warns of low ink in relation to the volume of the cartridges. Sorry. You’re expecting detail I can’t provide and I apologize. I’m sure that resource exists somewhere, I’m not it. As to my statement “it makes no sense”... if I still own the printer then I’ll insert new cartridges when they’re empty. So if cartridge A needs to be replaced then cartridge B goes in. The will allow the A ink to continue through the tubes. I get to use all of A. After years of use and many many cartridges there will be a point the printer is end of life. At that point yes, I will lose ink in the tubes, potentially a lot of ink. We are in agreement.

    All good points. In actuality you’d have to include all the costs a print house would incur, such as electricity etc. In this case I was specifically only considering the consumable cost per print, as calculated by the software. A business user may need to include more cost basis analysis than a consumer or hobbyist that would not consider their labor or electrical an issue, since that would be fairly static for any printer. But yes, there are other tangential cost involved.

On the site is says this: “Palo Duro Baryta has been described as "as close as you can get to Oriental New Seagull G", which was a favorite of Ansel Adams. It is not the exact paper to be sure. However, it will be your go-to paper for a true darkroom fiber look.” Of course I’m sure every paper company has something they consider an equivalent. If you have a different favorite paper manufacturer I’d reach out to them too.

    Thanks for watching. It’s impossible to convey the details of a high quality, high resolution, good color profile, large print through a 1920 x 1080 Rec 709 color space video. Combine that with the varied viewing devices, and a display of prints would not only be misleading, but possibly a bad representation of what is actually a very nice product. To work around that I explain in the past segment what images I tested with, why I chose them, and what felt about the results. That verbal explanation is the only way I felt was fair.

You can ALSO store it all into personal Lightroom printing presets.) So Your overly enthusiasms is frankly a bit tiring and suspect. Still worthwile thought. Thanks.

    I bought this printer because I couldn't believe that it was wasting so much ink even with careful use. My experience is that over the course of just 3 months, the Pro-1000 has filled the second maintenance tank with 250ml of valuable ink used just for cleaning. During this time I have printed regularly, but only about 180ml has been used in about 200 prints (mostly A3). Conclusion: This printer is a huge scam in terms of ink consumption!

    I agree, that there is a lot of ink used in cleaning cycles. That said, scam is the wrong term, in my opinion. That would indicate the design was intended to waste ink. I don’t believe that the Canon design engineers tried to waste ink for profit or some other gain. I just believe it’s a flawed design.

    So sad to see the Canon guy and Steve openly lying about the actual cost of printing with Pro 1000. They did not mention the mandatory cleaning cycles and how much they cost in the actual ink, or in other words, the fact that if you don't use your Pro 1000 daily for a larger amount of prints, 80 plus percent of ink will be used just to clean and prime your print head. And the expense manager does not seem to be reflecting that.

    Ok, I'll bite. In order: You start off by calling me a liar, saying I am "openly lying". No, I am not openly lying. This video was done in Aug of 2019. It (the printer) was sent to me by Canon - as I clearly mention in the video - for the purpose of a review. I clearly state that I have not owned a printer like this before, and mention ones I had owned. I did a ton a of printing tests with the printer until the original ink set was empty. I did my review based on those tests. I personally had not experienced this issue, which is well out there now of course. So lying? No. Reporting what I found based on the time I had with the printer. In fact, at the point I did this review I had researched the printer elsewhere and had not seen any major complaints like that. If I had I would have assumed that all printers go through maintenance cycles that use some ink, but would not have assumed it was as bad as is now widely reported. Around that time, again, we are talking about 2019, I started seeing Jose Rodriguez (a great KZread channel about printing by the way) discussing the maintenance cycles and ink usage, and he then commented about the issue here on this video. So again.... not lying. When this was recorded I simply was unaware of it, but let's move on. You called the "Canon guy" a liar as well. First of all, you don't know either of us, and while I do not need to defend him, or even reply for that matter, here we go. Drew answered the questions I asked. He answered them openly and kindly, and shared his time. But he is a Canon employee. It is not his job to say "Steve, did you know there have been complaints about our printer"? Calling him a liar is wrong on many levels, including the factual level. Next up, we didn't mention the cleaning cycles (addressed above and not part of what the review was about anyway), and we didn't talk about the "cost in the actual ink". When someone tells you they bought a computer for X number of dollars, how often do they include the electricity it takes to run it in that cost? When you tell a friend you bought a new car for Y do also make sure to include the maintenance cost over the life of the car in that total? No, you don't. Devices has the purchase cost, the consumable cost, and the overhead costs. Everything has an overhead cost. Could one argue, as you have, that ink wasted on cleaning cycles should be added to the overall cost of ink instead of overhead - heck yeah. Totally valid point. But I was testing a printer, and it's software features. Part of that was the Accounting Manager, and it reports on the print job cost based on various variables you enter, such as cartridge cost and paper cost. That gives you the direct print cost. The maintenance cycles are not part of that job, they are not a direct client cost for that job, they are part of the overall cost of ownership. Would it be nice if the software watched all ink usage and had at least a separate report for that waste? Yup. But that's not a job cost - it is a cost, but like electricity it's overhead and the cost of doing business. If the printer was owned for commercial use, think wedding photographer printing their own prints, then the cost of that ink would and should be calculated into the resale price, just like payroll, rent, office supplies, etc. So, while I understand your frustration with the ink use, which I cannot confirm is the percentage you threw out above, the Accounting Manager (not expense manager) has no reason to display that as it can't be assigned to a specific ink and paper print job. And, I didn't mention all of that because A) as I mentioned at the start I was not aware in my limited use that the cycles ate a lot more ink than most other printers - I am not, nor did I purport to be a printer expert, and B) That wasn't the point of the review anyway. I clearly stated I was approaching this from the point of view that most people do not understand the differences in these large format printers. I spent over an hour talking about paper, and using larger printers, and the wonderful features of such devices, and a few minutes on the software, of which a smaller bit was on the Accounting Manager. Still you chose to call me a liar because that little bit, and you were not only wrong, but rude. When I did this video I also watched and read MANY other reviews on the printer. I didn't want to miss something I was unaware of because of my lack of experience with printers like these. Not one review that I read, not one, mentioned this issue. Something tells me you're not browsing to find them all and leave comments, but hey, I have been wrong before.

    @@MilanRegec Debate is great, and no apology needed. You are not the first to point out issues they have found in the printer, usually over extended use. Most reviews don't do the extended time frame tests, and that's actually something I have considered for products I use very regularly. Unfortunately for me I don't print often enough to make that test valid in this case. It's actually one of the reasons I like @reneritchie when it comes to tech, he will do a "Product X after 6 months" or whatever, and it can be really interesting to see how opinions change, or are reinforced. My example is always FaceID. LOVED it for months, and then the miscues, not unlocking as easy etc came in to play... and then Covid. I still really like it, but a clear change of heart. Anyway, the bottom line is I appreciate that you gave the video a watch, cared enough to comment in any way, and came back to reply. So thank you.

    Hi Lee. If you look at the comments from Jose Rodriguez in these comments you’ll see a good explanation. This printer runs a maintenance cycle regularly, and that eats ink. Using it regularly, before the 60 hr cycle time, means the ink gets on paper instead of in lost in maintenance. But yes, ink is expensive, including on a printer that’s $1200.

    Does it clog? Answer. Yes and expensively so. The entire printer industry, whether Canon or Epson or HP, is one big fat ink scam. I’m thinking the clog issue is built into the systems to sell more ink.

  • @BehindTheShot

    You’re accusing an entire industry of fraud. No, clogging isn’t a design goal, and yes, consumables are a business on their own. But all nozzles will clog because they’re narrow little holes that pass a substance that is designed to dry. Some clog more than others due to engineering failures, bad design etc. Is the 1000 a problem child? It definitely can be.

    Showing you the actual prints wouldn’t work. Holding them up to the video would never display the intricate differences of the prints from each printer. Scanning the prints introduces its own changes. Photographing the prints on a table or floor and putting that image in the video would also have issues. The camera and environment might introduce color shifts making you see what’s not accurate. In all those cases the result would be a representation of the prints that could never be accurate. Those would be recorded into a 1080p video and then compressed by KZread as well. Plus, prints are on a physical media that is reflective light. The monitor you watched the video on is backlit. Everyone’s monitors are different, color varies, resolution varies, and most are not calibrated.The only way to accurately judge a print is to see it. To hold the paper and see how the texture affects it. Sorry you’re upset about that, but it’s the call I made at the time to show you the original files and explain where a user might see differences.

    There is absolutely no way you’d be able to see the difference in 250 dpi prints between a Pro-100 and Pro-1000 in a 1080p video. A print is a high quality representation of a photo, and scaling it down to video wouldn’t carry the detail. Not to mention, some (most) seeing the 1080 video representation on a phone, some on a $100 Dell monitor, and maybe (but a doubt it) a few on a color calibrated screen. And you’d never be able to see the paper differences either. With all the info provided here, if that one thing means you wasted your time then my apologies. Good thing all the other info here was free.

    Hey Keith, I try to respond to every comment, or at least those that make sense. Usually, I’m not so snarky. Sorry about that. I do understand your point, and when I had about 50 images spread out I thought about showing them, but taking a photo of a photo is hilariously tough. None of my rooms allowed getting a good shot without a glare here or there. When I got close enough then there was a color cast from the room, or the surface they were on. That meant more post work. So, I started thinking about how I could even show them in a way that helped the viewer. Scanning the prints introduces issues, photographing them has its drawbacks as described. In the end, I settled on this… I definitely did not want to show the images in any way that introduced things I wasn’t seeing in person. That would cause a viewer to make decisions based on an inaccurate representation. Long story short, I decided to show the images on the website, which I do mention that all links etc are there. That way people might be able to see the actual image and follow my comments better. You can see those here by the way: behindtheshot.tv/2019/08/01/printers-paper-the-canon-imageprograf-pro-1000/ I really do appreciate your time watching, and understand it will never fit everyone’s expectations.
