Great video Julian. Thought to add. For those like me who don’t use Adobe.. Save the file in Tiff format. Then open file with Canon Professional Print & Layout.Also additional reason to print. I also print and place them in a portfolio. For some reason potential clients when visiting them like the touch and feel of a print

Nice video Julian. I am waiting to see what they replace the Pro 1000 with till I upgrade my printers still have Pro 10s. Nearly went for this one but I sell a lot of a3+ and A2 so would be handy to be able to do the A2 in house. For me a photo is not finished until it is printed and it is definitely something that every photographer should be doing with their work even it is just to see your photos come to life at home. Thanks Richard. The ability to print A2 at home sure is appealing and I think a few people are hanging fire to see if they replace the Pro 1000 this year. Looks like they are fleshing the line up so it wouldn't be a surprise if the 1000 was replaced. Monty is ace, thanks for asking. Itching to get back onto Dartmoor like me!! :-)

@@Swaggerlot Cost is a tricky to one to measure because all you can do estimate ink usage on a per sheet basis. Based on published yields from Canon, I would estimate it costs between £3 to £5 for an A3+ print (including the cost of a high-quality paper). Is it competitive to outsourcing? That depends on a range of factors including volume and what you want to do with the prints. Personally, for me, if it costs me a little more to do it myself, I'll do it home. The decision to print at home isn't done a purely financial basis. I like the craft of printing and doing it myself. :-)

Took delivery of a Cano Pro-300 late last week (24/11/2022) and just waiting for a new desk to arrive to have something to set it up on. Spare Ink and some Fotospeed paper starting to arrive so looking forward to getting into Printing. Very informative video Julian and I particularly appreciated the info. on displaying them as 'she who must be obeyed' will not want the walls in our house full of my photos😞🙄

I love printing on my Epson R380 printer and my wife and I have a large gallery of our images in our main hallway of our home. To me, printing is the third stage of the creative process behind capturing the image, post-processing the image. You are correct, I love printing. My wife is also an avid photographer so when we travel we always create a book via LR of our images. Nothing beats the joy one can get from looking over images either within the book or printed pictures in the gallery. The cost of shipping is very significant and then we have to deal with exchange. Yikes!

Thanks for watching. I did consider talking about the costs of the inks but the problem is that the information doesn't age well. Ink tank costs tend to reduce over time, and costs can vary between suppliers. 👍

After making over 500 prints in the last 2 months my costs have been $0.01 per square inch so 8x10 costs $0.80 USD paying $12.99 per catridge.

Hi Julian, great video. Have been giving serious consideration to purchasing the Canon Pro 300 for printing. Have you had any experience in working with the usb to print from? Have a iPad and using Capture One with it. Would I be able to print to the Canon pro 300 using the usb port to do so? Thanks for your help

Glad you enjoyed the video! Never used the USB cable before as my PC is too far from where the printer is. I use a wifi connection to the printer and never had a problem. :-)

Hi julien i get my prints framed by the bracken gallery in chudleigh and i go with the art glass so there are no reflections. I would highly recommend them they are of the highest quality every time.

Hi Julian. Thanks for the video - helped me a lot to understand what I need to do to get into printing my own photos. However, I'm not quite sure how best to set up my home gallery picture mounts for the various photo sizes from pro-300 printer. In terms of your setup, are the external dimensions of a picture mount the same as the photo size (A3+, A3, A4 and panoramic) or is the aperture dimensions just a bit smaller than the photo dimensions so you see a larger photo in the mount. The latter would mean I assume somehow keeping the photo in place when putting it on the display shelf. Would it be ok to ask what your picture mount dimensions are for various photo sizes and the associated boarder widths. I know its probably down to personal choice but I just want to get started with something that's reasonable having had no experience. Philip

Hi - For an A3 print I use a matt sized 323mm x 445mm with an opening of 243mm x 365mm (so a 40mm border). I normally have a 1mm overlap between the opening and the print size (so the opening is just a little smaller than the print). Great informative video! I'm trying to decide on a new photo printer as I successfully jammed the print heads on my Epson R1900 probably from lack of use. If I jump in it will probably be this model. What is your opinion on buying a good used Pro-300 and having it shipped? Will the ink slosh about and deliver me a mess? Thanks !

Hey David, glad you liked the video and you found it helpful. Modern printers like the Canon Pro-300 are fine to leave for extended periods of time without use. If you want my honest advice, if I was going to buy a used printer, I'd want to see it in use first. Less of an issue if you are buying from a proper shop or online retailer though as they tend to quality check any used product first. That said, I wouldn't be worried about the ink sloshing about.

Enjoyed the video, Julian. I think that printing is something that is very often overlooked. Do you soft proof your image before you print?

Thanks Valerie, no I don't soft proof. To be honest, I've not found the need. I prefer to see how things look using a physical print but even then it's rare the output doesn't match what is on the screen. :-)

Great video Julian! I’ve been debating between getting the Canon Pro-300 vs the Pro-1000. I like the idea of being able to print wider panoramas with the 300, and also the up-front cost is less. However, I think the ink tanks are much larger in the 1000, and some have said it’s more economical in the long run. Do you have any suggestions? I’m a hobbyist and probably won’t be printing large volumes of photos to sell or anything.

Thanks Ernie! You are right, the Pro-300 is a cheaper printer, but the Pro-1000 has much bigger tanks making the £/ml for ink much cheaper (I've heard it's around 1/2). Saying that, unless you need to print A2 or are expecting to print larger volumes, the Pro-300 is an excellent choice IMHO. Even with the smaller tanks of the pro-300, the biggest cost for me is paper (assuming you pick a high quality paper). Ink costs money which ever way you look at it, but compared to how much my photography costs me in other areas, and the joy printing brings me, I don't worry about it so much. :-)

Brilliant video, very informative and the printer is lovely. Unfortunately it's WAY out of my price range. I'm not a professional photographer so, without actually selling my prints I couldn't really justify the cost. Nice to dream though!

Finally got it :-) I'm dealing with paper size and tray, you said that you feeded heavy paper from the top did you select fineart or heavy paper or did you tricked the printer selecting a different type? because as soon I select a heavier paper the printer tell me to use "manual feed" and I guess it is referring to the back

Excellent news Alain. :-) I only select one of two paper types, Semi-Gloss or Matte Photo Paper, and this has allowed me to use paper up to 320 gsm from the top feeder. I'm not sure how the printer handles the paper differently if you select fineart paper. It's perhaps because I use Fotospeed papers which generally mean you only need to say Semi-Gloss or Matte Photo Paper.

Thanks David, I rarely shoot b&w so I can't give any real world feedback, but I have no reason to think the Pro-300 wouldn't be an excellent choice. I've seen reviews from other trusted sources who have confirmed this. If you buy an printer like a Pro-300 these days you'll get great results (assuming the source material is good ;-) )

Hi Julian. Happy new printer !! Looks a nice piece of kit but I'd value your opinion on how it compares to the Canon Pro-10S. I couldn't be happier with the quality of prints from my 10S (ink costs aside !!) using the Studio Pro plug in. I'm guessing the software is better with the Pro-300? Really enjoyed the video Julian. Cheers Tim. I'm lucky that I still have both printers so I might well do a comparison video in the future. In terms of print quality I can't say I've seen a significant improvement, but I've yet to print the same image and look at them side by side, so the jury is out on that one. There are lots of useful improvements around the software and the use of the printer, but it's hard to say if it would be worth the "upgrade" from a 10-S. It's easy to recommend the Pro-300 if you don't have a Pro-10s though. I'll do some more work on comparing the printers though.

I guess the other area of interest for me is projected ink tank life between the two and how that stacks up against your real world experience. Hope this helps mate.

Hi Gavin I do like your gallery set up. Just wondering how you (a) fix the photos to the backing boards - with tape / photo corners? and (b) do you use a tape or glue to "seal down" the matte and backing board once the photo is inside attached to the backing board? I was thinking that maybe they (matte and board) wouldn't lie flat against each other so making for a little problem when you put them on your Ikea stand? From the video it seems you have overcome that possible problem

Thanks Gavin. The photos are attached to the backing board using some pH neutral tape. For my home gallery I tend not to seal down the matt and backing board as I like to be able to change the photos out easily. I do have a selection of photographs in mounts that are sealed, but these tend to photographs that I use for display in more formal situations such as when I am doing photography talks. Even then, I only seal them down by double-siding the tape I mentioned. When the unsealed mounts are in the Ikea ledge the board and the matt don't sit completely flush with each other, but I tend to only view the prints face on, and it's a sacrifice worth making so it's easy to change the print out. Hope that helps!

Yep, I've had no problems with the wireless connection at all. I run my Pro-10S wireless as well and never had issues. No wires (apart from power) required for either printer. :-)

Thank you Clay. 👍 That is a really difficult question to answer. I print on a variety of paper sizes, paper types and at different quality settings, plus ink tanks are consumed at different rates, so it's almost impossible to answer that question. I can't even give you a rough answer. All I can suggest is that you look at Canon published tank yields (www.canon.co.uk/printers/professional-photo-printers/a3-printers/imageprograf-pro-300/specifications/).

@@jbairdexp Hi Julian, yeah I totally appreciate you need some more time with it... it would be cool if you could compare the two of the them and maybe consider these points: 1. B&W quality - depth of the blacks etc (you’ll have to do some B&W edits. 😂) 2. Both versions of the canon software (I understand they have made some upgrades / improvements with the new software) 3. Something that’s always baffled me... a comparison print with the new canon software and a print direct from the LR module. For me, I have found that I get a slightly sharper image when printing from the LR module when compared to the original canon software used with the pro-10s. Thanks mate, keep up the great work👍

Great suggestions Vince, and regarding the b+w images....lol, how well you know me! :-) I didn't think there was a difference between the LR output and that of the Canon software.....I shall check that out! :-)

@@jbairdexp it could just be my imagination... lol. I’ve ran a few tests my end and always had ever so slightly sharper images when using the LR module. Always annoying as I’d prefer to use the canon software due to its ease of use and layout. If you get time, I’d love to see some comparisons even if they don’t incorporate what I’ve suggested. Thank you for your video, Julian! Do you recommend the Epson P900 or the Canon Pro-300? I fear going to the Canon Pro-1000 because of its age and a recent experience we had with Canon obsoleting our 8-year old printer by not updating a driver for the Mac OS. We also had clogging in print nozzles on previous Epson products.

Thank you for watching John! I have no experience of Epson printers so can't give you a recommendation but like the Canon printers, I hear good things about the Epson printers. I wouldn't worry about the age of the Pro-1000 though. Even when Canon do replace the mode (no sign of that yet), they are very unlikely to just drop support for it. It has a huge installation base and is the printer of choice for many professional photographers as their printer. They might stop selling it, but they are unlikely to stop supporting it and selling ink for it. The Pro-1000 is also cheaper to run if you print a lot. While the tanks are more expensive, they are bigger and the cost/ml is less. All depends on your requirements though!

I have used Epson printers a fair bit before and the one major consideration is that you have to print a fair bit or they are prone to the print heads clogging. This becomes pretty expensive as you have to run multiple cleaning cycles that use a lot of ink to remedy. Even doing that sometimes does not fix it. The prints are amazing but I ended up switching as it required to much upkeep and money.

im looking at a printer or printing future for my channel. im a nikon shooter too. what were your reasons behind going for the Pro-300 and not the Pro-1000 ? i wonder if they are going to release an update of that 1000 any time soon, its about time.

Hey Rich, I am interested in getting an A2 printer so the imagePROGRAF 1000 is an obvious choice (in the Canon range). But as you've said, the 1000 is probably due a refresh soon so I've decided to hold off. At the moment A2 is very much a "nice to have" so happy printing up to A3+ at the moment. 👍

The Pro-1000 is a waste of money. The only good reason to get the Pro-1000 is you really need 16x20 and never need larger or smaller. You have to load one page at a time and print but the Pro-300 can handle stacks of paper at least 10-15 sheets so it's way better for everything smaller than 16x20 and the Pro-1000 can't do anything larger. In other words, it's a lot of money for a machine whose only advantage is it fills a gap and does 16x20 and a much larger up front cost.

Hi Julian, question: will this print on magnetic paper? I'm thinking it will, but just want to be certain before I purchase it. Thanks!

Hi. Sorry if this question is weird but I completely ignore it. As I watch photo printer videos I see all photos with white borders. Isn´t it possible to print using the full width of the paper? Regards.

Hi, nope, not a weird question. :-) Yes, the printer will print borderless so the print covers the entire area of the paper. I tend to leave a border because it makes the print easier to handle (you can pick it up with out touching the printed surface), and it also makes it easier to mount if you have some area of the paper not printed on. 👍

Hi Julian. Just wondering why you switched from the Canon 10s to the pro300. I have a 100s and seriously thinking about the pro 200/300 but at the moment there is nothing wrong with my 100s so just wondered did your 10s break or you felt it was just time to upgrade. Cheera

Hey Winston, I actually lent my 10S to a friend, and I picked up a 300, so it wasn't because I felt I needed to upgrade my printer. If there is nothing wrong with your 100s then I wouldn't loose any sleep over the 200. You could argue that the pigment based inks in the 10S and 300 will give you longer lasting results than the dye based inks in the 100S and 200, but unless you are selling archival prints, I wouldn't worry about.

What is the external size of the frame you're using? Frame white border to photo ration, best practises?

There aren't really any best practices as such. Frame and mount design are largely personal choices you make for each specific photography. However, I do have a video that shows you how I go about designing my frames and the look I like - kzread.info/dash/bejne/eH6NscWkhK_IqaQ.html

On days when I’m not printing proper photographs, I make sure to print a few nozzle-check sheets to keep the printhead clear of clogs: and I haven’t needed a clean cycle since purchasing the 300 last year. But when traveling for a week or more, it’s irritating that there isn’t an automated way for the printer to produce such test sheets, to keep the head unclogged. Do you have a process when traveling, when you can’t print anything for a time? Thanks.

Hi, thanks for watching. Honestly, I've never had the need to do any nozzle-check sheets or suffered from clogged heads, even when I've not used the printer for weeks. In the four years that I've had the Pro-10S, I've just let it do it's own thing (cleaning schedules). I'm not planning on changing that approach for the Pro-300. :-)

@@jbairdexp Thank you. I had the 10 as well and it was nearly nightmarish when it came to clogging, far more than the 300. I had printed daily but it still required frequent cleaning, and leaving it for a week demanded multiple deep-cleanings upon returning. Printing a random nozzle check adds agitation to the inks, which has helped so far.

Any recommendations on a vendor in the US to get custom sized picture mounts?

Hi Julian, What will you think will be the best printer? The Canon Prograf pro 300 with 4800 x 2400 dpi and 10 colors, or the prograf 1000 with only 2400 x 1200 dpi, but with 12 colors?

Hi, best is relative and will depend on your printing requirements. Both printers produce stunning results so the choice is down to budget, biggest print size, and running costs. The quality of the prints from both printers should not be of a concern to you. :-)

Only the Pro-1000 allows you to print images 1.20 m (long edge, not diagonal).

Hi Jules: I noticed that you appear to have the image metadata printed on a margin within your print. Is that correct, and if so how did you accomplish this? Is that a feature of your Canon printer? I have been placing stickers on the back of my images when I print but this is a pain. Thanks, Keith

Hi Keith, well spotted sir. This is a feature of Canon Professional Print and Layout software that comes with the Pro-300. In fact, just checking, it's also available in the Canon Print Studio Pro software that came with the Pro-10s. I only noticed it recently though and found it very useful. For the information you see on the prints in the video, that is all auto populated when you select to include the print information.

The Pro-200 uses dye based inks while the Pro-300 uses pigment based inks. You will still get fantastic results with a dye based based printer, but if you want a deeper dive into the differences check out this excellent video by Keith Cooper - kzread.info/dash/bejne/Y56rxMF_dqrXlKg.html

Both the driver and layout software are included on the CD that comes with your printer. However, I would download the latest versions from the Canon website.

Do you believe the Pro 200 is still worth it in 11/2022? It's on a good sale right now. Or do you think I should go 300?

Both printers are excellent choices and are more than capable of producing excellent results. The choice of which one will be down to budget and what you are going to do with the prints. :-)

I provide prints to clients but I haven’t been a fan of the prints I’ve ordered as they never seem to produce the colors correctly. Or the hue is yellow or blue when printed. Does the ink last for a fair amount of time in the 300?

@@CAllen-uw7hc The number of prints you get from the tanks is hard to quantify. It depends on so many different variables (paper choice, quality settings, size etc). Assuming that's what you meant by "last a fair amount of time"? Generally speaking though, the more you use a printer the more economical it is. Printers like the Pro 1000 have much bigger tanks, and so are actually cheaper to run as the cost of ink per ml is less. So if you are printing all the time, while the cost of the printer is more, and the tanks more expensive, the cost of ink per print is less compared to the 200 and 300 (which both use the same size tanks). Check out Keith Coopers channel as well as he has done a lot of in depth stuff on these topics - kzread.info

Beautiful inkjet printer for large prints don't let them get damp or touch them when they come out that is why I prefer thermal dye sub it is the closes thing to a real photograph in feel and toughness and cheaper to own in amount of prints it is too bad Fargo stopped their support for their 11x17 inch dye sub printer If you don't use your inkjet for long periods the cartages clog up wasting ink and money so you have to keep replacing them when you go to print a photo Thermal due sub printers do not have that problem that is why the DNP printers and the Cannon Selfy that uses the thermal dye sub process are the best photo printers on the market from 4x5 inch printer up to 8x10 inch prints.

Hi, it will very much depend on which country you are in and where you buy your ink from. Prices can vary between suppliers, and change over time, hence why I don't mention specific prices in my videos. Thank you for your reply. I live in Canada and the ink prices here are really expensive. This is the main reason I would think about buying a megatank printer instead of one using ink cartridges.

Video was informative and I Liked it, but please stop with the bullet point sound effects. Crazy annoying.
