I just got off the phone with HP customer service after 1 hour and 15 minutes trying to resolve this same exact issue and was told that there is no fix and that I need to buy a new printer. This guy was able to tell me the issue in 1 minute and 44 seconds. THANK YOU!!

Thanks for sharing this!!. I opened up the right side door and was able to see the cartridge compartment and a little gap to the gear. In my case the gear had a crack and it was halting the moment of the cartridge and the bottom gear. I used a little pin to push the gear in and start the printer. Once the cartridge moved I immediately switched it off and was able to access the gear. Used a soldering tool( you can melt it with a ball pen nib) and melted it a little bit and voila it worked!!!

Well kevin we have 3d printed a few to fix this problem, we have done it in both the 6968 and the 9010, 9020 series of printers. I didnt know that you sold the gears though. HP is so smart that they change the size of the gears ever so slightly so you had to get diffferent gears to solve the problem.

Hello, (sep 2023): i took apart my HP 6978 w intent to replace the CMOS battery 2032 to see if that would make the printer print.. After changing the battery and putting the printer back together, the screen on the panel was blank with a white background but no menu. I removed the new battery and replaced it with the old battery by taking the printer apart a 2nd time. Again, the panel displayed a blank white screen. I played w buttons and checked ribbon cable connections but nothing. I replaced the old battery w another NEW 2032 battery by dismantling a 3rd time. After putting it back together, and making sure that the ribbon cables were correctly put back together, the panel is still displaying a white blank screen. Is there a reset button on the back of the panel or anywhere after changing the CMOS battery? Any help from anybody would be appreciated. I can scan using the computer software and that works. If i try to print a report from the pc hp 6978 software, I a get a "device is busy" message. Apparently, the menu is hung up after connecting the power on. Any ideas?????

I have an issue with my printer that is similar, in its symptoms at least. That gear is there and if I manually turn the wheel the tray moves backwards and forwards without a problem. This allows the print head carrier to move side to side. However, if I leave the printer to do this, I get an error saying there is a printer error/jam. I'm certain it's something to do with the carrier not being allowed to move unless I do it manually. Any ideas?

Realizing this is an older comment, I wanted to come here today and relay a story about what happened to me with the same errors you had. In addition to checking Kevin's gear issue, there are other things that may cause the carriage jam and paper jam errors to pop up on the screen. When these happen, they will not fix themselves. Something needs to be done. Either paper needs to be found and removed, the gear needs to be replaced, or a sensor needs to be checked. Note that when an error (paper or carriage jam) pops up, the printer is sending a notification to the computer chip that one or more of the drive wheels or rollers are not moving. Those wheels and rollers are all mechanically connected to a movement sensor somewhere inside the case. If the sensors aren't seeing movement, a jam error appears. There are three sensors that are easy to see and get to when the top cover with the ten screws are removed. There is one larger one (about 2" in diameter) on the left side to the right of the main printed circuit board near the bottom of the case. It is mounted to the left of a white gear that runs the main drive roller you see when the ink carriage is to the right. The drive roller is mostly grey in the middle, and chrome colored on the left side where the gears are attached. That white gear also has a rubber belt that turns it. It is directly in line with, and below, the thin cartridge position sensor strip I talk about in the next paragraph. It is a very thin clear round disk with dark markings on it. It spins when the left gears spin. You need to make sure that clear disk is in the slot inside the sensor reader. The sensor reader is below the thin disk on a printed circuit board. In my case, someone, or something, caused that sensor disk to become lodged outside the sensor. I didn't get the printer new, and it didn't work when I got it, so someone else may have worked on it and put it back together wrong. But I did have all kinds of jam errors. Having that clear disk outside of the sensor would tell the printer computer chip that something was not moving and jam errors would appear. The second sensor is the one that reads the position of the ink cartridge carriage tray. It is a long (about 12") and thin (about 1/4") almost clear strip and it runs from left to right behind the ink cartridges. There is a sensor reader that this strip fits into on the ink carriage. This thin strip must be positioned inside the reader for it to operate correctly. If it isn't, the ink carriage will slam to the right very quickly. And because the sensor isn't seeing the correct movements from the carriage, you will get carriage errors to appear and the carriage will be locked to the right side. The strip has markings on it. On the right side of the strip there is a triangle and a round dot in black. The triangle should point backward when installed correctly. The third sensor, and the one which is least probably the problem, is the sensor on the upper right side rear, on the inside and to the right of the paper travel path. This sensor is underneath an about a 1" square printed circuit board. It spins when the cartridge cleaner process is in action. Make sure the thin disk is positioned inside the sensor. This one will probably be ok. The other two need to be checked. The problem this sensor will indicate will be if the cleaner module gets gummed up with ink and prevents its movement. Eventually, that module will need to be removed and cleaned to make sure that sensor disk is free to move. So like I said, in addition to checking the other things Kevin mentions, make sure you check these sensors. I messed with mine for a long time (weeks) before realizing two of them were not in the right places. Once fitted properly, I was able to get a non-functioning jam error-laden printer (HP6978) back in business. Good luck with yours.

Thank you for your video. HP has been unable to solve my problem because my warranty has expired. The only problem is that this gear costs a minimum of $16, or about 10% of the price of the printer. We can see that HP and its subcontractors really don't care about us.

This solution alllmoost worked for me. Once I plugged in and restarted the printer the cartridge moved as it should. It even slid to the left twice. But after that it got stuck on the right side again. To me I don't think any gears are broken or it wouldn't move correctly at all. So I don't know what else to try. Any suggestions?

@@michaelbird1485 Shortly after i posted this..I had given up.. My husband ordered me a new printer already. I put the lid on .. screwed everything back in. Then I thought well I’m just going to reset to default and do a printer head alignment. And if that doesn’t fix it. Screw it! I’ll have a new printer on the way. And low and behold.. after a lot of whir’s and gur’s coming out of the printer..the screen went back to normal! No errors, no paper jams. So I said .. what the hell.. let me try to print something.
