This song hit different now. I'll never listen to this song the same way again. My husband was hospitalized with Covid when he slipped into a coma and his condition seemed to worsen by the hour. I was on the phone with the doctor and I asked, " Doctor...tell me the truth...will my husband make it out of this?" She said," Honestly, he'll be lucky if he makes it through the night. He was already diabetic and had congestive heart failure. I was in the middle of doing some housework and I literally almost fainted when she said that. I played Purple Rain while I attempted to finish my cleaning. Then suddenly a wave rushed over me, and I burst into tears. I knew he was gone. He coded 3 times that night, and on the 4th heart attack, he couldn't be resuscitated. He died at 2 am, on August 28th, 24 days after our anniversary. My world was shattered and my heart was broken into pieces. He died in 2020, it's been 2 years....and I'm still struggling with the grief, loss, and heartache. I miss him every day, hour, and minute. I stay strong for our 5 daughters, but some days the pain is unbearable and I break down in the quiet stillness of the night when I'm alone in my bed. So this song holds a special place in my heart. It was the moment I knew he was no longer with us and I had to let go. I miss him so much and I'm still trying to figure out how to adjust to life without him. He'll always be the love of my life. I appreciate the life and love we shared, and I look forward to seeing my baby in the purple rain. Thank you Prince, for creating this amazing love ballad that became a beautiful but bittersweet memory and soundtrack to the end of my husband's life. I'll see you both standing underneath that purple rain when I get to Heaven💔😙

I was born in 1962. I am soooo glad and greatful to saw Prince 5 times (the best musician at all), Genesis+Phil Collins, Michael Jackson, Tina Turner, Supertramp, Madonna, Pink Floyd and Depeche Mode etc. live at stage. I will never forget these moments

This is one of the best songs ever produced. It is composed in Bb major, the chords progression is absurdly complex and beautiful, through time the melody enters your mind and soul. Only an angel could produce something like that, after all, but it was Prince. Maybe he was an angel too. Rest in heaven, legend.

@@AtomizedSound I disagree. He is often playing with extended chords. Making Bb major into Bbsus2 or Bbsus4. I’d say he is mystically adding suspensions and sevenths. It’s unpredictable. I think the fact it’s easy to improvise for a guitar player doesn’t mean it’s simple. I like to play this song, but I can’t play the same way he does. It’s too much :))

Most people don't understand the difficulty of this song. It's written in Bb Major, but it's crying and begging like a minor scale. Incredibly hard to do. One of the best songs ever written. Rest in heaven Prince.

.... Yes, seems he pushed every Spiritual emotion both into & out of that guitar! I always loved him & what he was able to share! And I recently saw him in an old Video, express his wish that humans would " leave fear & walked forward " , that's what he did long years ago. This video is a reminder of how “ right “ his spiritual leanings & philosophies were! Now, don’t ask to debate me on the philosophy of time. I’m ALWAYS still learning; when learning is over, what keeps us here, engaged in day to day life? So often people disappoint; likely due to unreal expectation... But that’s a book I’ve not cracked. Um, yeah I tried to get cliff notes~ only to learn none exist!... back to topic at hand, I’m sure Prince holds a special spot in the Heavenly Choir. I can’t wait to hear him in concert again! teKie

@DaFilmakerDrew Since the day I first heard it in the 80s. I was a recently new Christian. I knew it was about seeing a love during Jesus' REIGN. That was roughly about 40 years ago. Then a few months ago I heard this version. I think this one was the original version & that it likely was titled Purple Reign but the music label and their executives that he was signed with, made him change the title and some lines. Thankfully Prince got away from them and their contracts. This song has a special meaning for me and the young youth minister who lead me to the Lord back then. We always played this song when we would go out. We became engaged, then married, then divorced very young. However, we will likely always care about each other and we know that we will one day see each other in that Purple Rain (Reign)!

June 25, 2023, it’s been 39 years since this song was released, I’m still listening to this masterpiece.

I always felt he knew something we didn't...vibrated at a higher frequency, floated on a higher plane, and saw behind the veil. Thank you for leaving us the gift of your music.

@@lukecapetown1930 since forever. he listens to gospel music and such. "The Cross" is an obvious example of its influence on him, and if you look into songs like "Let's Go Crazy" or "Purple Rain" deeper you'll find some grander themes in his lyrics.

@@Gambit22003 Err...no. I’m a huge fan of his music, have been since Controversy. But truthfully, bending notes while running blues scales that any decent guitarist player can play in their sleep to relatively simplistic chord patterns doesn’t make you an extraordinary guitarist. He was talented, innovative, and a great entertainer, but not some musical deity/guitar God.

I appreciate how he acknowledged God and Jesus Christ in his song.

Almost the end of 2023. So many great experiences and memories shared here on this comment page. Prince is definitely one of the GOATs. The genius and talent this guy possessed was one of the greatest gifts GOD gave us to witness. Happy Holidays to those out there and Merry Christmas.

Just left Paisley Park last week. My husband sent me for an early birthday gift. That was the most tortured tour i had been on. Just to know you walked where Prince walked, saw all the memorabilia he was noted for, saw his costumes, went to the concert hall, sat in the club, saw the doves, saw his cars, motorcycles from Purple Rain. If you are a true fan that tour took you to another place. I've been with Prince since Soft and Wet and that's a mighty long time. Rest in Power. You are dearly missed.😢

I can definitely tell Prince was a very godly man. He's up there playing that guitar and singing purple rain for God and Jesus. He was an amazing person and singer he is definitely missed and gone from us way to soon. Prayers and comfort to his family.

I wish so much i would... i should have seen him live before he passed.... what a sad goodbye... very sad. Two very sad goodbyes in the last 5 years where Prince and Eddie Van Halen. Both hurt deep inside. Two geniuses who made music that touched deep so many lives and so many moments for so many people.

I was at this concert! Filmed on the 18th of December,if I remember correctly.Was one of about 50-100 fans who was able to buy a ticket(made of a gold metal that was painted purple and engraved).Still have the ticket framed along with 2 of Prince’s guitar 🎸 picks from the show.Best concert I’ve ever attended and was in the 2nd row on the left side.Was wearing an Orange pullover with a black hat. Can see myself a few times when they pan out at times on the whole dvd.

Never realized how great of an artist he was until I was much older. RIP PRINCE. Much respect to praising Jesus. When most people denounce him publicly...

It was a great day to see him give praise to the true King. He had his demons as do all men but in the end he laid it in Christs hands in acceptence and full trust.

I cannot count the number of arrangments he did of this song. This by far rocks to the very soul of being here on this earth. My mother raised me on this music and also saw him in the 80s, told me it was the best concert she’s ever seen. And she had been to plenty. I have loved him my whole life. I’m 32. My mother was 56 when she passed last week. Suddenly. His music is alive through her, and through me. There will NEVER be another prince. Ever. 💜

I’ll never forget the day I saw on the news that Prince was gone. In the following days, the newscasters on my local station all wore purple, the Eiffel Tower was bathed in purple light as was the Golden Gate Bridge . Around the world purple was ever present. The proof that he was truly going to be missed but never forgotten. 2016 was a year that we lost so many talented musicians, we finally understood what it sounds like “when doves cry”. Rest In Peace Prince and all those that crossed over with you.

Many amazing things about Prince but one of them that doesnt get mentioned is how amazing it was that a skinny little kid from Minnesota can come outta nowhere and make the color Purple forever associated with him, snatching that color away from royals everywhere. Now when people hear the word purple far more will instantly think of Prince and not the Queen or King of this or that country.Show me anyone else who was able to pull that off in just one far too short lifetime?

Everytime I hear the first second of Purple Rain whether album or live version... chills literally run through my body. And once Prince play’s his famous guitar solo... goosebumps begin to show and the feel of tears begin to fill my eyes. Prince, among so many late great legends no matter what they do whether it’s music, sports, acting.... have left a unbelievable mark in many of our lives. Seems like they’re still here with us, but it just shows how strong they spirit is. Rest in paradise Prince💜💜💜 and the many greats that have left us so soon.🙏🏾🙏🏾🙏🏾🙏🏾🙏🏾

It sent chills down my spine when I heard it for the 1st time back in the eighties. I'm 46 years old now and yes sometimes it brings a tear not from sadness but from the raw emotion coming out of his soul and he handles that guitar like the" goat"! Eric Clapton was asked in a interview one time how it felt to be the best guitar player in the world. His reply was " I'm not sure you would have to go ask prince to see what it feels like". Mad respect to Eric for giving prince the respect he deserved. I always thought he was the "goat" so many people overlooked his skills on a guitar. If he was not the "goat" there we not too many that could make a guitar sing like that!
