Coming from someone who isn't hardcore Prince of Persia fan. But a casual fan who plays the classic game, Prince of Persia (1989) on my PC and sees the film version in 2011 on my tablet. Personally, I wished the Assassin's Creed series had just retired around Black Flag or Odssey. So that Ubisoft or other publishers to bring back this series. My sympathy to the fans (old or new) who has been waiting for decades for a new Prince of Persia game. Also, I'm aware that these long-term waiting commitments for the next games to be announced with official dates from game companies reminded me of Diablo 3 (2012) for Diablo IV (2023).

Prince of Persia 3D is an incredibly fascinating game to me, because it represents a literal adaptation from 2D to 3D. The dimension changed, but everything about gameplay and structure is identical to the originals. Meanwhile, Sands of Time did it the other way, straying far from the first two games while only carrying on their ideas. Only one turned into a good game.

I had a CD-ROM as a child which contained the full versions of both 2D Prince of Persia games along with a playable demo of Riven, and a short featurette focusing on the making of Prince of Persia 3D, which I finally got to play when I was about 16 or so... I was so disappointed that I took it back the next day and exchanged it for a copy of Quake 2. The biggest issue for me with PoP3D was that it was basically a completely new story instead of solving the cliffhanger ending of PoP2, and it lacked the fast-paced action and fluid controls of the 2D games.

Yep, the same engine that powered Morrowind, then Oblivion, Fallout 3... Bethesda used it as a base for the Creation Engine, used in Skyrim, Fallout 4 and soon TES6 and Starfield. en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Gamebryo

For anyone wondering, this is harder than any Dark Souls. Beating this game as a kid without any guidance is a major feat that takes a lot of patience. Each level was a unique puzzle to solve within the 3D environment. - Game did not always come with a manual. Commands had to be self-taught. - There was no tutorial or hand-holding. Good luck. - There was an inventory, and you better use accurate items at accurate times, lest you need to restart an entire level. If you skip an important item sequence, you do not get a "Game Over", you simply get lost and have to rethink it through. - First level is unapologetically difficult. I stuck my hand in the statue many times before figuring out to destroy the box, and then put a bracelet on. You are safe to assume from that point on that all mechanics will be unique to the level, and hard to figure out. - I spent hours running in circles of a single map, before I saw a lever on the wall. It was almost invisible. - You may easily miss ledges just because of the camera angle, or a different texture shade. - The wonkiness of the movement & combat made it way harder, whilst it still remained true to the original PoP, which is a major +. - The camera angles at specific time made it irritating to play with Bow & Arrow. - You had to make each item count. Better not waste things. - You had to make each kill count, and avoid detection for as long as possible. - You had to be very aggressive against all enemies. If you catch one off-guard, you wanted to inflict as many slices as possible.

As a kid, I was never once more hyped up for a game than this one. I was nine at the time, the game was supposed to be delivered when me and my mom and sisters were over at Grandma's, my dad was supposed to pick us up and take back home so I made him bring the manual with him so I could have something to satisfy my crave for the game with until I got back to my computer (particularly on the way home since it was a long ride). To this day, no other manual has enthralled me as much as this one, I would read it over and over again: the backstory, on the enemy types etc. Thankfully, it was fully translated into Polish (the actual game was not) so I could lose myself in it entirely. Sadly, I didn't fare too well in the actual game. I had a couple of attempts until I finally gave up on the balloon level, even with a printed walkthrough I couldn't find the right spot to climb. Many years later, I got hold of a demo, I downloaded it just to relive some memories and... I couldn't for the life of me believe how I could ever sort of master those awful controls. They were absolutely bananas, at some 25 I could barely even make a freaking move that I had had no trouble with at nine. But I still do retain the soft spot for the game: the opening cutscene scared me shitless and so did the decapitation finisher animations. It was honestly pretty damn scary, all things considered, the late '90s 3D graphics sure contributed to the feeling.

Earlier this week, I shopped at a GameStop where someone dropped off a box of games to be given out. Among them was a PC copy of this game. I think I may have Beetlejuiced this video into existence. On another note, the controls in this game make the old Resident Evil games feel like Sunset Overdrive.

I never played Prince of Persia 3D, I just starting kindergarten when it came out, I only played old NES around that time, so I missed all the changes that gaming industry was experiencing during the late 90s, must have been an interesting time with all those games trying to perfecting 3D movement. When I was older I actually played the original PoP and the Sands of Time and Warrior Within. I hope we could get a new Prince game in the future

Prince of Persia was my favorite game series as a kid. The trilogy is a masterpiece. The first game amazing, second game combat evolved and to me was my favorite story wise and then the final game yet with some issues was a great way to end the series. I can’t wait for the Remake and I’m happy they delayed it as it did look rough.

Meckner nailed the big problem. Prince of Persia 3D never needed to be made because it *already* existed in the form of Tomb Raider. Not that it couldn’t have been a good game in its own right had it gotten the time it needed, but the whole concept stands out as stagnant from the jump, especially contrasted with the tack Ubisoft took with Sands of Time in differentiating itself from its contemporaries, ironically enough in the same way the original PoP did back in the day.

The Last Express (Mechner's other game mentioned here) is a really interesting one. It's an adventure game that takes place in sped-up real time. So a character might be eating in the dining car from 6-7, but then will go back to their own compartment to go to sleep after that. It's on Steam now, so fairly easy to pick up if it interests you.

Prince of Persia 3D's PS1 version must have been developed at least a bit. I have a distinct memory of reading in Australia's Unofficial Playstation Magazine a preview which was _quite unkind_ to it. It wasn't a big news item in UAPSM, it was just a couple of half-page columns in a preview roundup with a grainy screenshot. It cited poor draw distances and clunky platforming and said Prince of Persia wasn't ready for the leap to 3D. That said, that was such a common story back then that they could have just made that up based on a ten second look at the footage. I doubt they had a hands-on with it or it would have been a feature article of the issue.
