2. SOUNDBITE (English) Prince Charles, Heir to British throne:
"I know what my darling grandmother meant to so many other people. She enriched their lives. She was the original life enhancer. And in many ways she has become an institution in her own right, a presence in the nations - and in other realms and territories beyond these shores. At once indomitable, somehow timeless, able to span the generations - wise, loving, with an utterly irresistible mischief of spirit. An immensely strong character combined with unique natural grace and infectious optimism about life itself. Above all, she understood the British character and her heart belonged to this ancient land and its humourous inhabitants whom she served with panache, style and unswerving dignity for very nearly 80 years. I know too what she meant to the whole of my family, particularly to the Queen, to whom she has always been such a sensitive support - ever since my grandfather died when he was only two and a half years older than I am now. And for me she meant everything, and I had dreaded this moment along with countless others. Somehow I never thought it would come. She seemed gloriously unstoppable. I adored her since I was a child. Her houses were always filled with an atmosphere of fun, laughter and affection. I learnt so much from her of immense value in my life. She wrote such wonderful letters. But above all she saw the funny side of life and the laughter, I shall miss. And the wonderful wisdom borne of so much experience. She was quite simply the most magical grandmother you could possibly have and I was utterly devoted to her. Her departure has left an irreplaceable chasm in countless lives, but thank God we are all richer for the sheer joy of her presence and everything she stood for."

STORYLINE:
The UK's Prince Charles on Monday referred to the Queen Mother as an "institution in her own right".
Speaking from his Highgrove home in Gloucestershire, the Prince of Wales paid tribute to his grandmother's "infectious optimism" and sense of humour.
Charles said he'd dreaded the moment of her death, having loved her since he was a child, calling her, "the most magical grandmother you could possibly have".
The Queen Mother died on Saturday aged 101.
Her coffin is resting in a chapel at Windsor Castle where the royal family can privately mourn her before she is taken to lie in state in London.

Luckily Charles had his grandma for more than a half-century, compared to his grandpa who died of lung cancer in early-February 1952 - just 12 weeks after celebrating his grandson's 3rd birthday (on November 14, 1951) - and that is the only memory Charles ever has had of his mother's dad.

Charles wanted to take the royal flight to Paris but the Queen wouldn't allow it. Charles fought harder for Diana than he had ever fought for her in her lifetime."
