Primo Oval XL - Reborn!!

Тәжірибелік нұсқаулар және стиль

Check out the new parts I received for the Primo Oval XL. Not only did I get a new firebox, but a new grate as well. Watch the video and you'll see the difference between the old parts and new parts. Primo has excellent customer service and their parts are amazing as well. I'm excited to share these upgrades with you and to get cooking on them.

Thanks for sharing this. I'm getting ready to replace my Oval XL fire box for the second time since buying my Primo in 2011. The problem with the original design is the cast iron fire grate expands at a different rate than the ceramic fire box. This is exacerbated when the cast iron splits and cracks, allowing it to expand more. This in turn cracks the fire box. Putting the split in the fire box os a good fix as is the more robust grate. However, this time around, I'm 99% sure I'm going with a Kick Ash charcoal basket.

I called Primo and they told me that since I was not the original owner they would not be able to warranty the firebox. I get it, but there should be a transferable warranty. We pay a lot of money for these grills and when they don't last as long as they are supposed to it is frustrating when we have to come out of pocket more than what we already paid! Thanks for sharing the video. I ordered my heavy duty grate this morning from Amazon.

I understand why you are frustrated. Sorry to hear they don't honor the warranty any more.

What type of gasket are you using? It kind of looks like a fireplace gasket rope. I’m replacing the felt ones every year and would like something a bit more sturdy. I’d really like to get my hands on a steal braided rope like the big joe used...but haven’t had any luck finding something for the primo. As for the firebox and fire grate, same issue. Calling about the warranty today. I’ve owned mine (new) since 2004/2005 and that’s the only thing that’s broken over the years. Love the Primo.

I just discovered my firebox split in two almost exactly as your original one was, but with the iron grill is intact. I need to use it all before I will ever get a replacement firebox, so my question is about using it with your shim system. Did you really use wood shims? didn't they catch fire with the heat? What did you learn about that temporary system, and what works best? How many times did you use it in that temporary fashion? I am feeling a bit nervous about the fact that I have a big party to host in a week and just found the cracked firebox!

I apologize for just now seeing this comment! I did use just random pieces of wood for about a year or so. The wood did not catch fire, but over time they shift, perhaps even shrink due to the heat. But as long as the box is together it will cook just fine. How did your big party go?

The firebox on my Primo large cracked after five years of daily use. The grate did not crack yet, but the new fire box for the large does not have that expansion joint. Hope I can get another five years out of this firebox!

I hope you get lots of good use out of that new fire box. Strange that it doesn't have an expansion joint.

I've had mine for about 7 years. I cook so much I was using up those metal grilsl in 2 years. The only regret I have is I should have gotten the Primo sooner. I love how I don't use near as much charcoal as I used to and all I do is fill the fire box up. In 15 minutes I'm cooking when I'm done I close the vents then it's ready the next time just hit the charcoal with a MAPP torch and I'm cooking. Best investment I have ever made.

I’ve got the new version both grate and box cracked too and they still make you buy the grate again. I’m selling my grill. $107.00 every year or so is too much for me.

I called them up and told them what my issue was. They had some redesigns that prevented cracking and offered to send me the new parts all I had to do was pay shipping. Now shipping is NOT cheap, but they were amazing in allowing me to get the new parts for such a low price! I love Primo!
