Primitive cultures managed hair in different ways. Some cut it short, some kept it long, some added styles and ornaments to their hair. During more than six years I allowed my hair to grow and I experienced both the positive and negative aspects of having long hair. In this video I share these personal experiences and then proceed to cut my own hair with a very primitive tool - a stone.

    @@ChadZuberAdventures Interesting. I used to think those who read the Bible all the time are generally prejudiced bigots. I personally don't believe in man-made religions, they are the production of patriarchal and hierarchical thinking and they do not unite the mankind, on the contrary they cause wars and conflicts. I do pray time to time but to the Supreme Power who created everything. I just talk to him/her/it after a bad or a good day depending on my mood. Religions don't give you the power of unbiased, independent free thinking.

    Hey Chad, In our old Pioneer days back in Africa we would use wood ash and mix it with water to form lime. This in turn we would mix with animal fats and create soap. If there is some crafty manner of hunting a small pig for example and then boiling pig fat with lye (ash and water) you can create soap. Wood ash also on its own can be used for lime coating the exterior of your house in order to make it waterproof AND adding a bit of color to your walls

  • @ChadZuberAdventures

    Yes, I am aware of the process for making lime but I haven't done it yet. I'm sure I will be experimenting with that in the near future. But I must say that yucca leaves are excellent for washing.

  • @Skylarkeet

    @Skylarkeet

    You can use either, the ponytail just maintains the tension it also makes the hair much more even. When your hair was long it was dry because it needed oil. If you oiled and braided it it wouldn't be as much trouble. Are there any nuts there that contain oil? When you wash with soap alot it takes away the natural oils from the hair and dries it and frays it. I'm sure it will be much healthier shorter as the natural oils from your scalp can rehydrate it. @@ChadZuberAdventures

    @@Skylarkeet That's one of the reasons I cut my hair. I'm out here alone and I have tried braiding it myself but that just didn't work. Oiling it is more time to care for it and that's why I decided to cut it - because it takes extra time to care for long hair and I have many other things to do in life that are more important.

    That is one way to get new material to work with. I have always had long hair but always wore it pulled back and twisted (like a rope) into a bun to keep it out of the way, every day and always. It is safer - for every reason you can think of. I only took the twisted hair out of the bun to wash it or if I was going out and dressing up. In my sixties I shaved it off. Sort of like the new facial hair shadow look. Do I miss it? No. Do I look better with a shadow top? No. I'm now in my 70s, Do I worry about my beauty? No. I don't worry how I look to other people either. It's their problem. Isn't it? But I do love long hair. Always have. Always will. Chad, thx for doing this, filming it and sharing it with us. 👍👍👍👍👍

    It wasn't an easy decision. I've been talking about cutting my hair for two years. I intended to cut it a couple months ago but other projects were of more importance, such as the harvest season, etc. I've learned a lot about hair health over these years especially since I have only washed it an average of two times per month with yucca leaves. Prior to this video I hadn't washed it for three months. I found that I no longer got itchiness and dandruff became less and less over time. Through this experience I've come to realize that a highly natural diet and the use of purely natural products will allow the body the ability to resist all of those problems such as itchy scalp, dandruff and other health issues.

    I went over a year without a haircut during the early days of the pandemic. I hated wearing it that long - took forever to wash & rinse, and was always getting in my eyes. A pony tail helped, but I couldn't figure out how to bind it - had to ask a neighbor to show me how. (As soon as I she put the elastic around her wrist, it clicked.) My first haircut in 2021 was liberating. Now I wear a non-trendy 70s style cut - appropriate, since I'm in my 70s...

    We had a similar experience then. I loved the look of long hair when I was in the wilderness but in society I felt out of place and didn't like it. Perhaps because in society there are certain standards of appearance required and so I spent more time detangling it, etc. But in the wild it was also annoying when the wind blew it in my eyes or when traveling through dense brush and it would get stuck in the branches. Short hair is better for a warrior type.

I'd rather just cut it out of the way & forget it's there until the next time. I guess that sets a low bar for my physical appearance: if it's good enough for me, it's good enough. If someone else has a problem with it, well, they have a problem. I took pride in my work, but regarded fashion as a distraction, a waste of time & creative energy. Thank you for talking about seeking counseling for mental and emotional needs. We're finally shifting away from a cultural bias against doing so, and it's important to de-stigmatize seeking help. In many primitive societies, there were ways for people to seek advice and receive counsel, things that were socially and culturally acceptable, even if the methods and techniques used weren't perhaps as carefully studied and refined as we currently try to do. The old joke about "basket weaving" was meant to be a modern dig at people finding mental and emotional peace in such a hands-on task, but such things have brought a bit of peace for millennia. Asking, "When was the last time you sang, or danced?" is another valid way of checking in with your emotions, associated with indigenous traditions, even if it's not Jungian or Freudian or whatever-ian in nature. And sometimes, just having someone *listen* to you in a non-judgmental way is a treasure beyond compare. So the more we can get quality mental and emotional healthcare looked upon as an acceptable, accepted, and necessary thing, the better. Thank you!

Or perhaps dig a well... He is definitely water savvy, but get water and bring it home is definitely an endless activity, being efficient or have some stock means less time and effort involved in water needs and used for something else equally important. e.g. before to tile the floor i think it could be more important to tile the roof.

    I have a few small containers (about 1 gallon each) that I store water in. They are kept in the hut during the winter. There is a lot that isn't shown in my videos. I try to keep the videos mostly on topic because that seems to work best for the algorithm. It also takes longer to record so many other aspects to daily life here that aren't relevant to the topic. But I do plan to make larger water collecting containers. I know very well the importance of that. Fortunately in winter there is water in the spring and at times there is snow on the ground. This is why I showed the melting of snow by the fire to make water.

    Chad, I was wondering what the temperature is in your cabin when it's only 4 degrees Celsius outside? Do you have any thoughts on insulating the hut? I know that the northern peoples of Siberia built houses from deer skins. They didn't have windows. It was dark, but warmer. In addition, Eastern Europeans closed their windows at night with small doors called "ставни" ("stavnee", shutters).

    There is a lot that I can do to better insulate my hut. I've been limited by time. Inside it is nice and warm when the fire is burning. At night I wake up a few times to restart the fire and warm up again. So, it is tolerable at night. I just need to make sure I have plenty of wood stored inside for each night.
