Primitive Bean Soup and New Adobe Shelter (episode 17)

Тәжірибелік нұсқаулар және стиль

The hills and mountains of this land have an abundance of wild nutritious foods to sustain good health and provide necessary energy for me to continue making bricks and other useful items. In this video I prepare a wholesome bean and herb soup from palo verde seeds and wild greens that I harvest in this area and nearly finish building my primitive adobe shelter with a juniper roof. Very soon I will begin construction of the new hut. This series will be ongoing so be sure to stay tuned for the next video.

My equipment:
Camera: Nikon D7500 and GoPro Hero7 Black
Sound: Zoom H4N
Editing: Final Cut Pro X on MacBook Air
Location: Parts Unknown
FAQ (Frequently Asked Questions):
Who films you?
Me. I travel alone, shoot, edit, upload, everything, all alone. On a few occasions I may be accompanied by a friend.
How many cameras do you use?
Usually I use just one camera. When I have underwater scenes then I also use a GoPro camera. I get different angles by moving the camera around and repeating the action to create a more cinematic viewing experience for the audience.
Where is this place?
In order to protect the integrity of the natural landscape I prefer to be very vague about the locations I use. There are places that I used to visit that were so beautiful and untouched but the consequences of social media brought all kinds of people to visit and sadly some people do not respect nature and have badly damaged these places. Therefore I do not share locations.
Where did you get your sandals?
I first started wearing sandals on outdoor adventures in February 2014. I’m so glad that I did because wearing these Luna Sandals has really helped strengthen my feet. You can see their selection of adventure and running sandals at this link: www.lunasandals.com/?rfsn=102...
(Note: I receive an affiliate commission from any sales derived from clicking on the link above)
Do you workout?
Yes, I workout, but not in a gym. I have some weights that I use and also do a lot of bodyweight exercises. I also run and sometimes swim. I hike frequently to collect wild foods and to shoot these videos so I'm very active all the time.
Are you vegan or vegetarian?
I wish I could maintain my health on a primal diet that does not include animals but unfortunately that did not work well and I ended up with health problems as a result of those attempts. From my studies, observations of nature, and personal experience I have come to believe that the best diet for optimal human health is a primal diet (paleo).
Do you get lonely when you’re alone?
No, I don’t get lonely. I’m actually so busy shooting video, taking photos and doing so many other things like making cordage, cooking, weaving, etc. that I really don’t have time to think about my lonely condition. Sometimes when something profound happens on an adventure I can’t wait to share it with people, but other than that I do not get lonely.
How many languages do you speak?
My first language is English but I also speak fluent Spanish and Portuguese. I also speak very little Russian. I may soon begin learning more languages.
How old are you?
I was born in 1972. At the time of this video I was 48.
Where did you get the music in your videos?
This series is the first one that I am making all the music myself. I recently made a drum and maracas (rumba shaker). I am now using them to create the intro and ending music in my videos, but before in the past I have used royalty free music from several sources including KZread. Sometimes I bought the music but usually it was free.

There's something so mesmerising about watching someone brave the outdoors, foraging and harvesting their own food, and coming up with ways to make it more palatable for consumption and preserve it for storage for later. Especially when it's primitive or survival based. You're doing an awesome job, and I can't wait to see the next one!

You can make the mesquite pods into sugar too or I have seen you can even make bread out of them. Recipe is online. Tons of food there for anyone. Especially for Chad here.

my ex wife had a grandmother living in Zackatecas Mexico. She has lived there all her 90 year old life and her father and his father before him. It is 2.5' adobe walls and wood and adobe roof, with a layer of tin on top. It is in perfect condition and cool and nice during 110 degree heat and warm during the rain. The house is 3 bedroom with a kitchen. Its over 150 years old at least. There is a all rock stacked wall that is about 3' wide, 4' high and well over 400' to enclose the back yard and separate the corn fields. Keep in mind, no concrete and the rocks must have come from a river that is 1.4 mile away. Blows me away!

Perhaps make a Dakota fire pit but rather than use the second hole for draught make a grate from Adobe (pancake of Adobe with holes poked in it for air) and sit the fire on that. The second (draught) hole can be plugged under normal use, but when you want additional air to reignite the fire you can unplug the second hole which will allow air to go under the grate and assist.

I know it sounds gross but insects can be a life saver. It would make great content to make a scorpion/insect trap. If you're squeamish just grind them up and make something else out of them like soup or bread. Way easier to take down. They contain way more nourishment than even a fish or rabbit per pound. You already ate ants so yeah. They can be drowned to make safe or used as bait in a fish trap. Lavender cinnamon and cedar diluted(I bet the Juniper oils would do this) with oils can deter scorpions if sprayed or laid near said spots FYI. Making some char cloth may make your fire making more simple for exploring. Try it. That rotted Hide may work for this. P.S. you know your plants well. Most folks spray their weeds without knowing how great they are. Narrow and broad leaf plantain for instance. So good. Wood Sorrel or Clover. Burdock. I got you Chad. Im hip. Need assistance? Just ask me. It may be hard to get in your spot but roman concrete is stellar if you can make it.

Hi chad, I m new to the series I am not sure if you did this In the future episode but you can insolate House and making the bricks stay together with cement. You can make cement by burning tree wood until you make it Ash then mix it with water and remove the excess water, then add sand to it and mix it. Keep up the work chad

I would tie small branches into a square and then weave the barks tightly into it. Then you get roof tiles which you can place and adjust more easily on the roof 👍
