Scrap the paper wad. Use an old pair of underwear 10+ yrs. The more holes the better, skid marks are optional. Works every time! Never let the wife talk you into throwing them out! They’re not done yet, until YOU say so! Yes I’m kidding, great videos Canadian, keep them coming.

Years back in the 1970s when I ran a pump we could never pump through that much rubber thes mixes have really changed we always used steel whenever we could

Even back in the late 90’s (when I first started out) it was 4” steel pipe, followed by 3” rubber, and then tapering down to 2.5” at the end. The amounts of various gear had crammed onto the pump, it was a complete yard sale at most pours. But yeah, it’s crazy to see these mixes slide through 250’ of all rubber, not a days gos by that I ain’t thankful for it 😁

I do grouting with pumps and talk to the operators when I get the chance but usually there is no time in the work day, looking to have a quick back an fourth chat with a seasoned operator. Would you or anyone be interested? If not, any advice for someone looking to enter the trade Any info I can find online to get ahead?

@@canadianconcretepumper1979 I know it sounds silly but priming out downhill goes so much better the faster u pump. I know it sounds ridiculous. When u slowed it down a couple hoses in my anxiety kicked it honestly. But when u pump fast it doesn’t give the bentinite time to run , when u pump rlly fast the concrete catches up and pushes the prime the way it’s supposed to. Every time I’ve accidentally primed out wide open I’ve never plugged 😂

@@kimvasquez1435 for 2.5” hose and larger I totally agree with you, I just find that with the 2”, unless we’re are using 3/8 aggregate, I’ve had better results priming slow. That being said, I’m going to try priming fast through the 2” hose next time out. Haven’t done it for awhile, so why the heck not 😁😁😁

The “correct” way would be to stick in water and ball it up then grab another paper and wrap around that ball and keep going till it’s a tight ball but still lose enough that it molds to the hose size

I’ve been doing Caleb’s plastic bag tech and it works amazing

First thing I would try is a few handfuls of Sika Grout Aid in the concrete you had in the hopper, it really slicks the concrete up. The other thing I would do is use a bucket of mortar mix poured into the reducer, with a gallon or two in the hose ahead of the mortar. I guess you would have to put the 2 inch ball at the end of the first hose.

All good suggestions. I do find that grout works better than bentonite in terms of priming, it’s just far more costly and not a convenient in terms of storage on the trucks as well as at the yard. For some of our more critical pours we still mix up grout.

The plastic at the clamps has always performed for me. I've personally done 770' solo, no plugs. 950' w 1 other man, no plugs. I've heard of the paper, but it never made since to me. The plastic has never failed me....

@@pumper2597 it’s critical to poke a couple of small holes in the upper portion of the bag as such that it can vent, otherwise it will rupture from air pressure long before the slurry/concrete reach it.

Few cups of dishwashing liquid followed by bentonite works well with long pushes/down hill.

Scrap the bentonite, cement and water grout mix with 2 balls in the end of first hose. You gotta pour some grout back into reducer and into swinger tube. If you get your first hose full of grout I Guarantee it won't plug😅😅 Also add a drop of diesel to the bucket of grout while you wait on concrete and it won't start to set in the bucket.make sure it's a thick mix and your problems will be solved 😬

We’ve definitely not been seeing the success with bentonite priming which we did previously. Mixes have in our area have changed and become more coarse. I used to primed 250’ of 2” hose in one shot using bentonite, these days I can’t seem to get much beyond 150’ without having to bust the lines open and purge a segregation pack. The main thing I dislike about using bagged cement/grout is the logistics of storing it on the truck as well as at the yard. Bentonite is so much more user friendly in that regard. That being said, I’m going to give your method a shot here on an upcoming pour. Stay tuned 😁

I always had good luck pouring prime in reducer off of pump, clamp a piece of 3-5 mil 55gal trash bag(I found thinner to be better) between reducer and hose. Then, about 50-75 ft out wad up some of same plastic put in hose with half bucket of prime behind it. Found plastic moved through unprimed hose better than paper or sponge.

Was the paper you used to thin as cement bags' are more up to the job when under pressure, also the mud in your hopper was it a bigger stone than turned up seeing as you were running a 2 inch line the grout looked a bit watery as you plugged up quite quickly - I was taught here in the UK make your grout like double cream or you will get seperation and plug.

The mix which was in the hopper was exact the same mix code/design as the stuff which showed up at this job site but batched out of a different plant (definitely a bit rockier, like you had said). We tried again at this same same setup about a week later but used a much tighter wad of paper as well as a thicker mix of bentonite. We made it just past the 150’ mark before plugging. Much better results than the first time. As you had mentioned, thicker primer for the win! 👍🏼👍🏼👍🏼

Put a bucket halfway under neath ur hose at the pump tip ur betonite/slurry in and hook it up hold the hose up and follow it threw while chasing the slurry making sure it doesn’t run away from the crete everyone for the own that’s how I do it by myself 👊 pump on bro

It’s funny that in our market said ratios are for the most part a “proprietary secret” amongst suppliers. This mix we are using here is a 14mm (1/2”) stone with a good amount of sand as well. This same supplier does have a mix which is even one step better for line-pumping and uses 10mm (3/8”) round stone. Through the supply chain shortage we did see some variations in sand, which really changed the dynamics of the mix from both a pumping, as well as placing/finishing perspective.

This was my first time trying the newspaper trick. We most definitely screwed it up by not packing that ball of paper tighter inside of the hose.

Looks like a few large stones in that mix in your hopper that may have plugged 1st.

Yeah, the hopper full of mud which I travelled with was a touch heavy on the rock on comparison to what we usually get.

I work for a pre mix concrete company and they have a mack cement pump truck that doesn't want to pump the cement when ever they try it has a sound like it's starving of fluid and the valve body vibrates have you ever had a problem like that with any of your trucks if so can you let me know what your mechanic did to salve the problem in question that I asked please

I would put the sponge in the second hose and then water and thick bentonite in the first hose

Yeah, bentonite being thinner than ideal definitely did not do us any favours on this one.

As it turns out, I did it completely wrong and should have wadded it up more tightly.

I like to tear a zip lock bag in half and clamp it between my 4 to 3 reducer. Pour 2 buckets of prime in my 5 to4 reducer,score the plastic a little bit that way the bag holds the prime from flowing. Once you turn the pump on the bag will pop and mud will follow the prime the whole way down 👍

Why didn't you use any pipe?

Unless doing big volume, we rarely get into using steel pipe. The vast majority of our line-pump work is less than 2 loads of concrete. We get away with running a lot of rubber/small line around here due to the mixes which are available in the region.

Gonna guess 60 to 80 ft. Think you would need like 3 of those pieces of paper balled up in each spot.

Best thing I do to prime with system anything over 150 feet of hose I use 2 5 gallon buckets slurry of Portland cement and pray to sweet baby Jesus

Absolutely! We’ve found that sand can be equally as important. Throughout the supply shortage last summer we did see a few alternate sources of sand, and man oh man does it ever make a difference with regards to how the concrete behaves.

Ya I used to work at a place that had very course sand. It stalled my pump on a 32mpa mix... not good. The sand at the ready mix plant I work at now is much better

@@ThePorkchop81 it’s funny, sand seemingly does get enough credit/attention in terms of pumpability of the mix designs. My favourite line ever is when at a commercial site with 300’ of line strung out and when I ask if they ordered a line mix, the superintendent says “yup, I ordered small rock” 😂😂😂
