I just did a quick google search on that... In total there were 1054 reports on any kind of criminal offenses that night in cologne. 454 of those were reports on sexual offenses and 3(!) on rape. It is 12-13x more cost effective to resettle a refugee within the Middle East than it is to bring them into America. But of course you didn't know that because you put feelings above facts and common sense. If you want to make right for all the people who've had their lives destroyed by Western intervention, start a campaign to jail any wrongdoers for war crimes. Your logic is fucking retarded - we didn't ask for this intervention, but we have to pay for it, and then we have to accept refugees too?

Let us help Canadians who are destitute first. Invest in jobs so that they can work and provide for themselves and live with dignity. Canadians are fast becoming second-class citizens in their own country after generations have paid into the system but are now having these contributions distributed to refugee immigrants who are housed in hotels and receive all manner of extended medical cover whilst many Canadians cannot afford to visit a Dentist or Optician, besides struggling to put food on the table or pay rent.

Ignored or minimized? The threat from that group is extremely overblown. Also this presents a moral question: Are hundreds of American lives worth more than thousands of Syrian refugee lives? Just send them all back to a hell on Earth because of a possible threat? Come on, it's the right thing to do. What if the Cuban refugees we took in had some bad eggs? They did but it was right to accept them. We have both an obligation to our nation's ideals and our moral integrity to grant some refugees asylum. I'm not saying to not screen them, but this fear that they might be terrorists is reminiscent of when some wanted to close our borders to Africa to keep out Ebola. It's a weak-willed, visceral reaction that does not imply strength, but a lack of fortitude. Fear of the unknown can not be our guiding credence. Lead with the strength to accept these refugees despite the possible threat, it's the honorable thing to do.

Canada is NOT a "melting pot" that is the USA thing. Canada's metaphor has been a "mosaic." That difference matters. In Canada the idea is that immigrants should keep their culture and share it with the rest of us. This is supposed to be similar to the way in which a mosaic is made up of different coloured stones. We are not a US "melting pot" where every stone is supposed to melt into the same thing.

More little countries with in Canada. This is not a country, this is an endless number of people who want their way of life to prevail over others.

Burce was ya but you do realize that most refugees have kids, and those kids end up going to schools where they grow up with people from all around the world. For example, I'm a grade 10 student who goes to school in Toronto. My parents fled Iran due to religious prosecution when I was a baby. Now I go to a school where I would estimate around 40% of kids are first generations immigrants and know a foreign language but that dosen't mean they don't integrate with other. Quite the opposite in fact. Most friend groups are very diverse and they get to learn about each others cultures. For example, my two best friends are russian and ethiopian. because of this I've had both russian and ethiopian food. Also, by the time a third generation of immigrants are born, they will likely be fully assimilated into Canadian culture. For example all the people I know who's grandparents came to Canada don't know the language of their country of origin. Like when me and my siblings have kids we probably won't be able to teach them Farsi and they will probably identify much more with their Canadian identity than their persian one. Even the adult immigrants from different parts of the world work and socialize together on a daily basis. Anyways my point is that there is nothing wrong with retaining your culture when you move into another country. In fact I am so blessed to be living in a city like Toronto where I have experienced so many different foods and languages and holidays and traditions from around the world. It's okay if it takes a while for a refugee to learn english or Canadian customs. It dosen't mean they shouldn't be allowed into a country for fear that they will be isolated. Just yesterday my sister was at a conference with two Syrian refugee familes that just recently came to Canada. They couldn't speak english yet so the people in the conference that knew Arabic translated what they were saying so everyone else could understand. Okay sorry for the long ass comment, it just makes me sad when people don't understand how wonderful a multicultural society can be. ❤

I don't think that is entailed by what I said at all. Nor do I think it follows from Canada's multicultural policy. There is sharing among cultures, although there is not a demand for assimilation. I have no idea where you get this "struggle to prevail" mentality from, it is certainly not my experience of Canada. The whole point of the "mosaic" metaphor is that it is not a "struggle to prevail" but instead a way of finding beauty through diversity.

heyhey1871 There are millions of amazing people in America, but it's got to be challenging with so many millions of people who still live in fear of their neighbours. Here in Canada, we not only embrace diversity, we are proud of it and know that it makes us stronger. I sincerely wish the very best for America. There are many good people in your country. Don't stand in the shadow of those that are still fearful. I will continue to hold a positive vision for America, even though I have been struggling myself to accept the results of your election. Best wishes from Canada.

+dothedeed Trudeau is alright so far. But Merkel is not. Trudeau's approach to Syrians is families first and ensuring they are safe before entering. Merkel's was just open the borders. Instead of proper screening, what you get is that most refugees are young fighting age men (72%, as noted by United Nations), ''supposedly'' from Syria; and so Merkel has successfully pushed families and young children who could need help to the side. And then you are surprised by events like in Cologne. Well, no shit! Just check the rights of women and other minorities and how they are treated in most Middle Eastern countries. That is not ISIS who holds these beliefs, but the average middle-class men of those countries. Merkel most definitively does not deserve a Nobel prize. All of you are letting your emotions cloud your judgment.

I am amazed and saddened that a man like Justin Trudeau who is younger than our President; is more informed and articulate. This isn't about being Democrat, Republican, or Independent, I don't affiliate myself with any political party. However, when someone can get their point across so well on a satirical news show, while our President can't handle credible news outlets and throws tantrums befitting a 13 year old teenager...then we have a problem.
