Tightest spot in the chain for adjustment, not the loosest or most slack. PhD Master Powertrain and Mechanical Engineer. And Honda PRO, and Victory Technician.

This video shows you how to IMPROPERLY adjust a primary chain. Read the comment from PhatboyHD88 who is exactly correct. A primary chain must be tightened at the tightest spot. Same thing with any other chain or belt that has a manual adjuster. Also: The cold vs hot primary chain adjustment is IMPORTANT. A hot chain will have less slack than a cold chain. Yes, that is correct. As your chain cools, the slack increases. Lastly.....Be aware, you will destroy bearings if you tighten your primary chain too tight.

Adjusting the Primary Chain Tension looks easy enough, ty, but when you're measuring for the chain up tension and down tension are you measuring from the same part of the chain... ie; from the top of the chain.... 26 is what we'll torque the adjustment nut correct..?? You say its easier to do this procedure with the primary cover off... I'm sure it is, but what do you torque those bolts to and should I replace the gasket each time.... I need a GOOD manual... I have an '03 Chopper 107 Rattler.... is this procedure ok to do on this bike.... I haven't gotten into it yet so idk.... I will use 20/50 dinosaur primary oil.... Thanks

I don't know if you're aware of this... Since you're an awesome mechanic, but you have to find the tightest spot with the chain for the adjustment not the loosest!!!!!!!

  • @PhatboyHD88

Im sorry my friend you are incorrect this is not the way to properly adjust primary chain,, i am a certified master Harley tech with 30 years experience.. you are supposed to adjust the chain at its “Tightest” point. Every chain has a point in which it is tightest ,, that is where you adjust the chain, you do this so you don’t over tighten the chain and it pulls on the other components such as bearings both on the engine and transmission when it is at its tightest point... those are the facts that is the correct way to do it and has been that way for decades...

Agreed. As a former motorcycle mechanic apprentice, adjusting the chain at the tightest spot is the way I was shown. This goes for any chain or belt with a manual adjuster. A chain gets tighter as it heats up and you'll trash bearings, bushings, your chain or belt if you tension it too tight when its cold.

i understand what you are doing here, but how about when the primary cover is on & your adjusting the chain thru the inspection plate? i've done this a few times & the problem comes with the notched plate. with my '02 Electra glide it seems the notches are too far apart for a perfect adjustment.

So after I find the right tightness by turning the wheel, I just torque it to 25ftlbs. But if the teeth do not allow the adjuster to move, what difference does it make?

  • @-MrRichBiker1967

you have to back off the 9/16 nut, enough..to make the teeth seperate, so the the adjuster can move mo!!!!!!!!!

kinda makes you wonder why they didn't use a similar design on the tensioners on the twin cam motor. Stupid but boy what a money maker for Harley Service departments.

Wrong! The bike should be in neutral. With the bike in gear it depends which way you roll the engine as to which side of the chain is slack. You rolled the engine both ways.... Also, you set your adjustment at the tightest spot. Do you even own a Harley manual?

This whole setup is garbage to start with. You have a nylon brick tensioner holding a chain whipping buy it about 20,000 feet per second and you all can't understand why it wears out so badly all the time. So many better options available.

It appears big dog is a harley davidson type engine/motor. But what i do not get is why are these motors here in 2017/2018 still using a chain drive primary? A chain drive is some of the oldest motorcycle tech to date because everyone has converted over to the gear drive. smh
