Priest says animals are people and "misgendering" is a sin

In this episode Trent examines the arguments of Fr. Daniel Horan who claims that Catholics should seriously consider that some animals are people and also claims it is a sin to misgender someone.

For people that put animals on the same level as humans, I use the "roadkill" test. And it usually gives them insight into how they truly feel about animals and humans. If you are driving down a road and see a dead animal on the side (most likely having been hit by a vehicle) would you have the same reaction if instead that animal was a human? I've never heard anyone I've asked, including some hardcore animal rights activist, say there wouldn't be a difference in their reaction or feeling. And that shows us the truth, even if both deserve respect, kindness, and love, animals are not on the level of humans.

@@l21n18 Interesting. Unfortunately there is only one way to find out if that's true, and I hope you or I or anyone never have to come across a dead human on the side of the road. I just find it fascinating that your reaction to seeing a squirrel or bird having been killed by a vehicle would be no different if instead it was a human being. Would your actions be any different? Would you pull over or keep driving for the human and animal alike? Would you call the authorities in both situations? Or would it just be more of an internal indifference to both cases? Either way, thanks for being the first person I've heard (or read) say there is no difference to them, as long as it is a honest assessment to the conundrum.

@@annaskele628 I don't disagree with what you're saying (minus the first two sentences). I even stated in my original comment that animals do deserve our respect and yes, reverence for God's creation. Still, it's difficult to perceive that I would have the same reaction to a dead animal on the side of the road as opposed to a human being in the same condition. I can acknowledge that it could potentially have something to do with the frequency of both circumstances. I see a lot of roadkill where I live. But I'm not indifferent to it. It's never a positive experience, but deep down I know that feeling would be amplified a thousand fold if that was a human being and I hope never have to come across that and I believe and know a lot of people would feel the same... Since humans are made in the image of God, it should be more traumatic to see a human killed than any other animal. Not saying the latter is never traumatic but there has to be a degree of difference. Just like there's a difference between killing a plant (scientifically demonstrated to have different forms of intelligence) and an animal, there's a difference between killing a animal and human, if not for any other reason than personal(species) bias. Again I agree, no matter what, reverence for creation is a, if not the, way to honor God.

In the UK, the name Ashley is unisex, where many boys have it as their name. In the US, Ashley is predominately seen as a girls name. Lynn and Tracey are also unisex names in the US, though not as common. I am a non-white where my complexion is sometimes mistaken for Chinese, Mexican, or Japanese. I am neither of those. Uncertain how Lawrence of Brindisi, Bonaventure, Padre Pio, and Francis of Assisi would say if they were in his monastery. The balderdash makes the Jesuit order look sane and, contrary to accurate stereotypes, a lot of SJ is on good footing with orthodoxy; it's not necessarily back to the roots of the order, before and during suppression, but we'll take it in stride. One day the heterodox of that order will not have power or platform; it probably won't happen in my lifetime but here's to orthodoxy.

Later in Acts 13:2, the Holy Spirit addresses him as Saul before he sets off on his first missionary trip. In fact, he is referred to as Saul 11 times after his conversion. It is when he sets out from Jerusalem in Acts 13:13 that the gospel author Luke begins to refer to him as Paul - which is in fact, the version of the Hebrew name “Saul.”

Thank you for the clarification, Trent. I am a first year college student and my school has been pushing the use of preferred pronouns and names since the first day I came for orientation. It's really, really uncomfortable, especially since I have mental wounds from my "best friend" attacking me in middle school because I did not agree with the LGBTQ stuff. Just a couple years ago, another close friend of mine started struggling with gender dysphoria, and is going down the path. This topic is just really sensitive to me, and is usually a huge can of worms, but I need to know: how do I handle people wanting to be called something that they are clearly not? I feel as though if I use the names or preferred pronouns, I am affirming these poor people in their illusion and supporting that type of lifestyle. How can I be truly respectful to these people the way Christ is? Do I use the names and pronouns? Do I not? How can I talk to them in such a way where they all won't immediately get defensive and go off? If you have a couple moments to respond, I would really appreciate it.

Hebrews 12 Therefore, seeing we also are compassed about by so great a cloud of witnesses, let us lay aside every weight, and the sin which doth so easily beset us, and let us run with patience the race that is set before us, 2 looking unto Jesus Christ, the author and finisher of our faith, who for the joy that was set before Him endured the cross, despising the shame, and is set down at the right hand of the throne of Lord God. 3 For consider Him that endured such contradiction from sinners against Himself, lest ye be wearied and faint in your minds. 4 In striving against sin, ye have not yet resisted unto bloodshed. 5 And ye have forgotten the exhortation which speaketh unto you as unto children: “My son, despise not thou the chastening of the Lord, nor faint when thou art rebuked by Him; 6 for whom the Lord loveth He chasteneth, and scourgeth every son whom He receiveth.” 7 If ye endure chastening, God dealeth with you as with sons; for what son is he whom the father chasteneth not? 8 But if ye be without chastisement, whereof all arepartakers, then ye are bastards and not sons. 9 Furthermore we have had fathers of our flesh who corrected us, and we gave them reverence. Shall we not far rather be in subjection unto the Father of Spirits, and live? 10 For verily they chastened us for a few days according to their own pleasure, but He for our profit, that we might be partakers of His holiness. 11 Now no chastening for the present seemeth to be joyous, but grievous; nevertheless afterward it yieldeth the peaceable fruit of righteousness unto those who are exercised thereby. 12 Therefore, lift up the hands which hang down and the feeble knees, 13 and make straight paths for your feet, lest that which is lame be turned out of the way, but let it rather be healed. 14 Follow peace with all men, and holiness, without which no man shall see the Lord, 15 looking diligently lest any man fail of the grace of God; lest any root of bitterness spring up to trouble you, and thereby many be defiled; 16 lest there be any fornicator or profane person as Esau, who for one morsel of meat sold his birthright. 17 For ye know how afterward, when he would have inherited the blessing, he was rejected; for he found no place of repentance, though he sought it diligently with tears. 18 For ye have not come unto the mount which might be touched and that burned with fire, nor unto blackness and darkness and tempest, 19 and the sound of a trumpet and the voice of words, which voice those who heard entreated that the Word should not be spoken to them any more. 20 (For they could not endure that which was commanded, that: “if even so much as a beast touch the mountain, it shall be stoned or thrust through with a dart.” 21 And so terrible was the sight that Moses said, “I fear exceedingly and quake.”) 22 But ye have come unto Mount Zion and unto the city of the living God, the heavenly Jerusalem, and to an innumerable company of angels, 23 to the general assembly and church of the firstborn, who are written in Heaven, and to God the Judge of all, and to the spirits of just men made perfect, 24 and to Jesus the Mediator of the new covenant, and to the blood of sprinkling, that speaketh better things than that of Abel. 25 See that ye refuse not Him that speaketh, for if they escaped not who refused Him that spoke on earth, much more shall we not escape if we turn away from Him that speaketh from Heaven, 26 whose voice then shook the earth. But now He hath promised, saying, “Yet once more I shake not the earth only, but also heaven.” 27 And these words, “yet once more,” signifieth the removing of those things which can be shaken, such as things that are made, that those things which cannot be shaken may remain. 28 Therefore, we receiving a Kingdom which cannot be moved, let us have grace whereby we may serve God acceptably, with reverence and godly fear. 29 For our Lord God is a consuming fire.
