It’s in my list
I'm still thinking about adding volume headshots to my offerings. Right now I'm small team or individual portrait style headshots with several different looks, adding a hair and Makeup stylist if they want it. So a bidding video would be great to help with my education. Thank you for your valuable insights, Gary. Greatly appreciated!

I've already got the first draft of the script! There is very often back and forth in the bidding process, learning how to navigate that is key. THanks for watching!
EVERY video about pricing photography: "I can't tell how to price photography..." :D Seriously tho, this is a great process to follow. Thanks Gary!

You tell people what to charge, you could hurt their business. You help people learn to think about how to charge, you could actually help them :)

Another useful video, Gary. Thank you! Would love to see a sequel where you go over how to bid on these volume headshot jobs. Speaking of event headshots, I have one scheduled for tomorrow. Gave the client a flat rate for up to 20 headshots. Anything beyond that will be billed separately. The client was fine with that arrangement. Need to find more of these opportunities in my state. Do you have a video that would cover that topic, too?

For me at least, volume headshot jobs typically come from Google searches. Your best bet is to create a dedicated place in your site for headshot stations/event headshots, speak to the purchasing motivations of those clients (added value, collect leads, great experience), and then drive traffic to that page with Google ads. That’s a bit simplified, but that’s the trick :) I am also teaching a class on this at Imaging USA in January

Any insight on how to drive traffic to a specific page on one's website? I'd like to focus on team headshots as well individual headshots@@GaryHughesOfficial

Thank you for this; it is very clear and helpful. I want your thoughts on including a location fee in the quote.
@GaryHughesOfficial

We do have a location fee, but I don't think it's strictly necessary depending on how you build your pricing. The budget pretty much is what it is no matter how you slice it.
@Coolcatgrooves

Great, in terms of wording and keeping it simple, as you expressed. Do you just put the location fee or word it differently, like the creative fee or something else? I like your approach to team day rate because it keeps it simple.@@GaryHughesOfficial

I think "creative fee" is kind of a bad idea. If anything on your price list makes your client go "what the hell does that mean?" it's a bad sign. Ours is listed as "Location Fee - Cost applied to cover time, travel, and parking expenses when working on location." I like the location fee, because they almost never question it. When they ask for a lower price I can always say, "How about I remove the location fee. Would that be good?"

First, I can not thank you enough for getting back to me and answering my question. Very old-school vibe. This sets me straight. Thank you. Can you recommend a formula for the appropriate location fee?. I have seen the range from 500- 1000. I don't want to make it up.@@GaryHughesOfficial

Simple enough. An hour of your time + gas, tolls, and parking is a good place to start :)
Definitely would like to see a bidding video.

Okay!
Great clarity- be a great tip to explain how you dealt with people when they did not accept your pricing. What did you come back with? Also, I think it’ll be valuable to do a video on the pricing of teams if you haven’t already
@GaryHughesOfficial
8 ай бұрын
It’s fairly simple as far as it goes. They won’t tell you their budget unless they want to work with you. If they come back to you with a lower number, you either agree or you don’t. If they reveal the budget it’s a good sign that they are motivated to work with you. Many times they just book someone else and never tell you. It’s important to calculate your cost and profit percentage so that you know how far you can negotiate while still making a good profit. Hope that helps!

I would love to hear your thoughts on lighting setup for small groups and teams, not so much large events. My go-to setup is the Parallel setup, which works for me, I am just curious to learn about doing small companies; am I making it harder on myself by not just using one large umbrella? My gear is Profoto@@GaryHughesOfficial
@GaryHughesOfficial

I mostly use the same or similar setup for any sized group. Just some slight variations depending on what’s needed. I have a video on it where you can watch me shoot a team of 10 or so.
I quoted a client for 30 company headshots but her response was that my quote was out of their budget and went in a different direction, what do you do in this type of scenario?
@GaryHughesOfficial
8 ай бұрын
Either your quote was so far out of market price that it didn't line up, or their budget was unrealistic. Wither way it wasn't a good fit and you move on. I recommend when you send a quote include some wording that says "We have some flexibility in that quote so if you have a specific budget in mind, please let me know." Sometimes that can bring them back to the table if you were close. Being over budget with your quote doesn't mean you don't get the job. I have to negotiate on most jobs at some point. The key is to be in the ballpark and demonstrate great service. And don't worry, nobody books everything :)
Bidding video, please!
