The One Light Headshot - Webinar Replay

When you shoot a lot of corporate headshots on location, you don't always have the space you need to use the kind of lighting setups you might use in your camera room. For times when space has been an issue, I have developed some techniques for creating good professional headshots with only one light and a reflector or two.
This video includes a short sales pitch for a product that I sell in my store, the link is below

    I ran my studio on just AD200s for about a year. You might have to shoot at ISO 200 or 400 here and there if you want F11 but they work well. The AD400 goes on sale regularly and is a really great addition as well

    The Kupo bracket thingy looks great. I currently clamp a Manfrotto Nano stand and 90degrees to use as a boom arm. It works great but can be a bit ungainly. The weight of the legs act as a counterweight and I can comfortably boom out to about 24inches before it gets wobbly, which is fine, but it's not the cleanest of methods. I might have to get one of those brackets.

    I see a lot of changes compared to your Creative Live lesson about headshots. Capture One now, which is way better than Light Room. I switched couple of years ago. You are shooting horizontal opposed to vertical. Is the client asking for that or is that your new format for headshots? Most important, you aren't doing the,than that turn three-quarter cut through one of the shoulders old school Bar Association? LOL

    In the 5 years since CL, I definitely have added some things and changed some things. I still do loads of vertical headshots, and I still shoot a great many portraits from a 2/3 view. Good thing there are so many ways to approach photography, right?

    I don’t think that horizontal headshots are trending, I think that, in many cases, they are more useful. Leaving room around the image for design purposes is advantageous for everything from social media to brochures. I still, however, shoot most of my actor and model images vertical. Hope that helps :)

    Clarifying the comment at 18:05 about the forehead being a hotspot, you metered the forehead at 5.6, moved the light back, and set you aperture to f/8. Can you explain that process and what you did? Wouldn't giving a bit of distance make the light weaker and thus a larger aperture or the same be appropriate? Thank you!

  • @GaryHughesOfficial

    @GaryHughesOfficial

    3 жыл бұрын

    I see what happened, I said “5.6-9” which means 5.6 and 9/10ths which is just slightly less than F8. A tenth of a stop is close enough for most things like this, I should have been more clear but live is live I guess. Thanks for watching!
