The world's finest crankshafts are made of weld-hardened 2 inch all-thread.

Exactly. This quality is unacceptable in my world. While you have to give credit for the ability and ingenuity of the people to make it with little resources, the quality is not there.

Of course, I wanted to see crankshafts at work. So, Tatra is known for its modular designs, including modular internal combustion engines, air-cooled, with prefabricated/modular crankshafts.

I would have liked a radius either side of the journal, maybe there is more to go, can't think a big end journal could be sized with a vernier gauge. also more care needed with protecting the crank end surfaces, these run oil seals must be good surfaces. Would have thought having the conrod present necessary to make this repair proper.

Balancing comes later if they choose to do it! You drill the counter weights to remove or add weight while on the balancer! Done every day in engine shops!

Easier to rebalance it than it is to get it back together and everything be absolutely perfect.

Cool to see the process but isn't the heat treatment all lost when he heats it to cherry red with a torch? I've never see anyone do this to machine steel. I also wonder if they'll re-balance it.

They heated it like that to make it lose it's temper and be machined easier. Once it's all together they'll have it balanced and heat treated again. People make a huge deal over nothing...

(But it seems to me that for such masters some holes are not interesting. Yes, even without lubrication it will work perfectly for 15 minutes!)
